“That’s what I want from this visit. You’re welcome to ask as many questions about my religion as you like, just as I’m being allowed to ask questions.” Caleb sat on her bed, exerting effort to make the action appear casual (which, of course, meant that he looked awkward doing it) and placed his hands stiffly in his lap. She had said she would try to understand, but he hadn’t had a chance to explain his reasoning. “Many scholars say that the original reason that tigers are considered sacred has been forgotten, but there are contemporary ideas. To Dark Realmers and followers of Thantos, we see that tigers are powerful animals that only exert their strength when necessary, such as defending their cubs or themselves. They’re incredibly intelligent; if you encounter one and you don’t intend to attack, they know. They won’t attack. We hold those traits in the highest regard.” He wanted this young woman, who he was investing too much emotion in, to understand what was important to him. “Is your religion free of sacred symbols?”
As their eyes met, he felt the room grow hotter so that he had to avoid her gaze. A sensible person would exit the room in spite of her invitation, nor would he be sitting on his object of lust’s bed. So, why was he not being sensible like he usually was? Why was he wondering what she did with that boyfriend of hers in the bed? Caleb stood up quickly at that thought and tried to play his actions off by putting a hand on his hip. Desperate for a conversation that wouldn’t head anywhere sinful, he asked the simple question “How old are you, Sidonie?”

Sidonie listened to what he was explaining. If they didn’t know why it was sacred, why did they keep it like that? She knew that some aspects of religion could be silly, so she didn’t ask. “Those are good traits, but lots of animals have them… And in this realm, farther south, it’s not unknown for tigers to attack adults and children who wander outside of the camps alone.” She shrugged. Animals, except those who actually had humanoid intelligence, like Icin, were animals. They could be unpredictable. Just because people ascribed values to them, didn’t make them less animal. “That is why it is hard for me to understand.” She sat down on her desk chair, watching him. He seemed so interested in discussing religion. It was nice, but the religious aspects that she was better equipped to discuss weren’t ones she was really supposed to talk to outsiders about. “Symbols?” She played with her hair absent mindedly as she thought about his question. “No… I don’t think so. Life and Death are sacred… And the sun, moon, and stars, but that is because Celest gave them to us to guide us in our travels and in our lives…”
She was startled when he sat up so quickly. “You can sit, if you want… it’s okay.” She didn’t want him feeling uncomfortable. It made her feel awkward. His next question struck her as out of the blue. “I’m nineteen. Why?” If he had asked during a conversation that wasn’t about religion, she wouldn’t have felt so confused. “How old are you?”

“Your realm doesn’t consider tigers sacred,” Caleb stated shortly. Now it was his time to get annoyed. Her allure wouldn’t save her from the tip of his anger. “You have a completely different perspective of them than a realm that does. When I say that they’re intelligent, I’m not blinded by my worship of something that you perceive to be silly.” Amara had to have created them with special care; no creature, except for pyrus, acted with such sentience. The tigers in the Ice Realm sounded as if they acted nothing like what he was familiar with. Somewhere in his mind, he realized that she hadn’t seen the beautiful red felines of the other realms, but he could no longer speak softly on this matter. His dark eyes narrowed slightly at her. Her realm even considered symbols sacred. Of course what Celest gave to them was sacred!—how were tigers, creatures Amara had graced them with not to be given the same consideration? “I asked for tolerance, yet here you are, giving me reasons why I shouldn’t worship something. Am I to blindly accept your ways without questioning, while you are free to debase my way? Show me a sign that you’re capable of respect!” He gestured forcefully, and then let his arm fall to his side. That was enough for him. With his temper seething, Caleb wanted to avoid resorting to superfluous verbal attacks, or any regrettable actions. The girl—it was her, not Ice Realmers in general--aroused passion in him, that was for sure. “I’m going to my room.” He turned his back on her and twisted the knob, opening the door slightly, and then let out a slow sigh through his teeth. Why did he still want to talk to her? “You’re young. I’m fourty-two.”

Sidonie shrunk back away from him, her expression turning horrified. Why was he so mad at her? Just moments ago, he had been so calm and nice. She had just explained why it was difficult for her to understand, not any of the other stuff that he accused her of. “I just said that it was hard to understand for me... I didn’t say you shouldn’t hold them sacred, or that it was silly.” She was close to tears, and then he demanded a sign that she could show him respect. She had been trying to have an honest conversation about her beliefs, and he was insulting her for it. Didn’t he come here to lecture her for that very thing? She glared at him, and stood up. “Am I to blindly accept what you say, without questioning things?” She threw his words back at him. “Can’t I explain my beliefs without you yelling at me?! I don’t care who you are, but if you’re going to behave like this, you don’t deserve any respect!” She crossed her arms and glared at him.
“Fine. Get out.” At that moment, no matter how attractive he was, Sidonie wanted him gone, and she wanted him to stay that way. She had thought he was a nice guy, and she had felt bad about insulting him, but obviously he was not nice. She kept her cold glare steady as he answered the question about his age. “I’m old enough to know when someone is being a jerk.” As soon as he was gone, she planned to go tell Trent that she was going to stay with her family until Caleb left. She didn’t have to put up with this crap. She refused.

From the moment Sidonie had such a frightened reaction to his words, Caleb felt a horrible sense of dread in the pit of his stomach. There was absolutely no reason for him to react so vehemently towards her. He should have stopped himself while he was ahead, so that he could salvage his persona. Her attack was in the past and she had done nothing but try to reach an understanding. Caleb felt subdued and ashamed as her words kicked him back in line. What felt worse was that he had seen the fear that he struck in her, as if he would have hit her. Gods, he was stupid. Him, of all people! He could never lay a violent hand on a woman, especially not her.
Caleb faced her shamefully, a pained look in his eyes. “I’m sorry…” He clutched the pendant that dangled around his neck, wanting something to hold onto something. There was a tight feeling in his heart. “I acted like a bit of a monster, didn’t I?” That word—“monster”—reminded him of his father and how concerned he was with controlling his temper. He would be ashamed if he learned that Caleb had acted so cruel towards a girl that he liked. Her words make him flinch and avert his eyes. “I apologize again, Sidonie… I don’t know what came over me. There’s really no excuse…” His mind mocked his words. Of course he did: he had been acting like nothing but an overemotional teenager who wasn’t getting what he wanted. “Please don’t view me as a representative of all Light Realmers. They’re kind people.” Caleb turned his back to her once more and left the room slowly. He had messed up. Where were his chances of talking to her now?

Sidonie continued glaring at him until he left the room. She shut the door gently behind him and flopped on her bed. He seemed legitimately sorry, but with his sudden outburst made her feel reluctant to forgive him right away. Stupid handsome jerk. She kicked her legs against the mattress in a fit of frustrated anger.
She wished Pathos had come instead. He was always patient and friendly, even when she was saying stupid, thoughtless things. He wasn’t even stern, and he still managed to make it easier for her to understand when there was a clash of cultures. And he wasn’t distractingly attractive either. Stupid Caleb.
With a sigh, she shouldered her bag and left the temple as quietly as she could to go watch the stars. Maybe it would soothe her current foul mood.
