“Mmhm…” They had fought less as friends, which made it somewhat frustrating that they did now. That the breakup was about jealousy surprised her a little. She thought it might be an argument. Although, she supposed the arguments could have been started because of the jealousy. “Oh…” she frowned a little as she thought about it. She didn’t think she would like to be on either side of that situation. She would want her boyfriend to trust her, but she also wouldn’t want him hanging out with someone she didn’t like. But, she thought that she’d put up with it. “That does sound complicated…” She wasn’t sure what to think of him nearly drinking himself to death. It was one thing to take the edge off of sadness with alcohol, but that seemed excessive. She felt a little better about him when he said it had turned out to be a trap. At least his suspicions had been right. “His brother did that too? That’s horrible!” She frowned. She wasn’t close to her family, but she didn’t think that they would actively try and ruin her relationships. Especially going as far as killing her to keep her from being with someone. What kind of sick and twisted person did that?
“You said you don’t like it either.” Her tone was slightly accusing. It still upset her that he said that he hated the cold. It was disappointing, like if he had said he didn’t like people with pale grey eyes or white hair.
She shook her head, “No, it’s not you.” She had been working just fine while talking to him before. “Finding something out like this is a lot to think about.” She smiled slightly. “And I’m nervous someone will come in…” She still could get in trouble, and they might not agree with her assessment that it was important for him to know about it. “I like talking to you… As long as it isn’t too much for you…” She really liked listening too his stories. Even if he didn’t paint himself in the best light… At least it seemed like he was being honest with her. She sometimes got the impression from priests that they pretended that they didn’t have any negative emotions or problems. It was kind of strange. And Caleb didn’t seem to be like that. “Um… How did you meet him?”

Caleb had to worry that Sidonie was judging him harshly by the story of his break up with Moshe. The woman was somebody that had to be seen around Moshe in order for others to understand why he was so adamantly against his lover spending time with her. The way she flirted with him and the looks she gave Caleb had been enough to make him seethe with anger. “It was an ordeal. I don’t know if she had been his brother’s pawn ever since she approached him, or if it was just that one instance. But I had never liked her. She gave off bad vibes.” He added: “But, over time I’ve been able to forgive. Everybody has their faults. She had come clean to Moshe, so I assumed that she felt guilty for her actions. But on the other hand, I haven’t been able to forgive her brother… He showed no remorse for his actions.” As he recalled, Moshe had been raised in the same homophobic environment, but he had grown to accept himself and the lifestyle that he wanted. “He was a very hateful person…”
Leaning his chin in his hand casually, not wanting to call attention to the tone of her voice, he nodded. “I don’t like it. All it does is make me shiver and feel groggy. I really need to layer jackets to be okay on cold days.”
“Ah, I was half-teasing you. Don’t worry about it.” He should have changed his tone from his usual mellow voice with somebody who wasn’t used to his personality. At least it hadn’t ended with somebody getting insulted—not that it ever really did. Being a priest, he did pick his words carefully. “Nah, it’s not too much,” Caleb waved his hand dismissively. “I mean, it’s shocking, but I’m very happy that I’ve met you. It’s not just because of your soul…” Had he wanted her after hearing about her past life, he would feel guiltier than he already did. “I thought that you wouldn’t get in trouble for this…” Caleb gave her a concerned look. Had she stretched the truth?
“I can tell you about that…” Caleb looked to her with a somewhat sly smile. “But you have to promise not to be too judgmental. Moshe was quite a bit older than me…”

The way he continued to describe it made more sense to her. Or at least cast him in less of a jealous lover light. She was glad he forgave her. “I think I understand.” Even if she wasn’t being nice to Caleb, it seemed like she probably was doing it because she had feelings for Moshe. Sidonie had to feel some pity for the poor girl and her unrequited feelings. What his brother had done, on the other hand, would be harder to forgive.
“Oh…” She felt bad now for saying it now. Why hadn’t he said before that it was because it didn’t make him feel good? “I’m sorry. I’ve never been someplace warm, so it’s hard for me to understand…”
“You were?” She looked confused for a moment. She hadn’t thought it was teasing at all. It sounded more like he was being concerned and polite. “Huh.” She smiled brightly and blushed a little when he said that he was happy they met. “Me too.” Even if their souls didn’t have a past connection, he was nice and she liked hearing about stuff that happened outside of the ice realm. And… It didn’t hurt that he was very handsome. She liked looking at him. “I won’t…” She hoped that Father Trent would be understanding. She wished she didn’t have to tell him, but she felt like she should. She didn’t want to make Caleb think she was lying about it being okay to tell him. “But that doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t get yelled at a lot until they let me explain.” She brushed hair out of her face. “If I explain it first, it’ll be okay.”
She grinned and leaned forward. His conspiratorial smile and the way he worded it made it feel like she was getting to know a secret. “I know. He was in his fifties. I won’t judge!” She nodded, wide eyed. She wanted to know.

“You don’t have to apologize. It’s a family thing.” How had he upset her? It was only the weather. “Florentior is actually quite cool compared to other realms, so when I first moved there, it took some getting used to. I still don’t like the winters, but they’re mild compared to what I experienced coming here.” It felt as if he had lost a few pounds to shivering while traveling.
“Yes. Don’t worry about it…” Ah, there was her lovely blush again. He couldn’t help but grin at her, knowing he was able to charm her. But it confused him as well; was she romantically interested in him, or not? In spite of her being taken, he couldn’t stop himself from wondering what was on her mind. “I don’t want you to get yelled at, either.” He wanted to be with her when she told her mentor about what she had revealed, but it felt risky. He could assume that the temple would not appreciate a foreigner telling that that it was okay for their secrets to be known. It could even be seen as a threat to their way of life. It would be counterproductive to his visit.
“Ah. How much do you know about him, Sidonie? I’m afraid that you’re going to ruin my story,” he teased with a smile, then turned serious. It was easier for Caleb that she already knew about the age difference and seemed to be okay with it. That was one less objectionable aspect to introduce. “Moshe was my Lilnian teacher in elementary school. “ Worried about being judged harshly, he added: “But after I left that, I didn’t see him again for years. The next time we met, I was in my twenties. I saw him at a bar and I thought he was cute, so I gathered up my courage and flirted with him. Sometimes you just have to trust what you’re feeling, right?” Caleb let out a little chuckle, laughing at himself. “I think he just found it amusing at first and it felt weird since he used to be my teacher, but I’m glad I went for it. It was well worth it…”

“It’s summer here. So… To me, it’s really comfortable out…” The light realm sounded unpleasant, if this was colder than their winters. If this was too much for him, then he likely wouldn’t be able to survive the winter in the ice realm. It was disappointing, although now that she thought about it, very few foreigners showed up in the village during the winter. It was still one of the busier times though, since most tribes made an effort to be in a town when it got really cold and the snow made it difficult to travel.
She nodded slightly when he admitted he didn’t want her to get yelled at. “I’ll tell him… He might ask to talk to you to ask you to keep it a secret…” She hoped that Caleb didn’t argue that. Not only would it ruin the relationship between their temples, but it would also get her in trouble for trusting the wrong person. She wanted to be able to see him again, and she didn’t want to be in disgrace in the temple.
“I don’t know that much.” She smiled back, “So, please, tell me.” Sidonie blinked her eyes in surprise when he said that he had been his teacher, but it made more sense once he said that the relationship hadn’t started until he was older. An age gap was one thing, but she didn’t want to hear that her previous incarnation was a pedophile. What he said next struck her particularly hard. Was she supposed to trust what she was feeling? “Right…” She sounded distracted. What was stopping her? Her respect for Quill… Not being able to think of how it could possibly work out… She had duties here… He couldn’t survive the cold… Maybe it was better to trust her commonsense. He might not even like her like that. Pushing aside those thoughts, she smiled at Caleb. “That’s a cute story.”

“I can’t even imagine what your winters are like…” It would be the death of him if he ever visited the Ice Realm during its coldest months. Even inside the temple, it was chilly enough to dress like he was going outside in normal winter weather. He needed a cozy room with a fireplace to make it through his own realm’s winter without feeling sluggish.
“I don’t have a problem with that. I understand that your temple has its secrets and I won’t tell anybody.” Though it was tempting news to share with Pathos, Caleb wanted to avoid ruining the inter-temple relationship. He could envision Pathos’s reaction in his mind; he’d likely encourage Caleb to pursue Sidonie. With his mentor’s encouragement, he would have the gut to let her know about his feelings for her. He found it to be a little sad, considering how bold he used to be. There would be no confessions coming from Caleb, but as long as he continued to get positive reactions from her, he would continue to flirt subtly.
He chuckled quietly at her comment. “His initial reaction was cute—he must have thought that it was a joke. Then he realized that I was serious and he had some reservations about dating somebody so young, but…” Caleb rubbed the back of his neck bashfully. “I used to be a big flirt, so I came on strong. I really insisted that he give me a chance. I had just gotten out of a relationship before that,—she was too busy for a relationship--but he was never a rebound to me. It was almost ‘love at first sight,’ as corny as that sounds.” He could tell that he had those same feelings for Sidonie right now. Nothing during his visit would make him happier than having his feelings acknowledged, but he couldn’t involve himself with a taken woman. Fate may not have intended for him to start a relationship; his vows would have stood in their path, anyway.. But, for her, he could break them.

“Thank you.” She sighed in relief and smiled at him. She was glad he was willing to be cooperative. Although, she supposed that even if he did tell, he might not be believed. Oh, foreigners might believe that she had told him that she was the reincarnation of his dead lover, but they might think it was just a trick by a shameless hussy trying to get into his pants. She was a good girl who wouldn’t cheat on her boyfriend. And she wouldn’t use his grief to mess with his feelings like that. She told him because she thought he deserved to know that his lover wasn’t haunting the sea or living a horrible life. And because she had an academic interest in knowing what her previous incarnation was like. Still… the “getting into his pants” part sounded like a fabulous idea
Sidonie could imagine him being a big flirt. Maybe it was just wishful thinking, but he seemed like he was a flirt now too. She was actually very pleased to hear that he had dated a girl, even if it hadn’t worked out. Maybe she had a chance of being attractive to him. Even if they couldn’t be together, it’d be nice to have someone think she was pretty. “I, I don’t think it’s corny at all,” she blurted out, blushing. Sometimes people were just meant to be connected. It didn’t happen with everyone, but sometimes the deceased's feelings were strong enough to carry over to the next life. Moshe must have really loved him… She wondered if maybe their lives had been connected before Caleb and Moshe as well. She would have to see if she could look back that far later. “It’s more romantic than how Quill and I started dating.” She made a pouty frown. “We were always friends, but more recently everyone kept asking if we were dating, and I complained to him about them being annoying and he said ‘Well, why not?’” She shrugged. “It just kinda worked out that way…” She smiled a little to show that she wasn’t going to keep whining about that. “You’ll probably be able to meet him tonight. He should be here for dinner.”

Caleb smiled at Sidonie and thanked her, though he couldn’t tell if she was being genuine in saying that his story wasn’t corny. It was, in a way; he had flirted with lines that could have been lifted straight from a romance novel. But, it had worked. His bold words had gotten Moshe to like him in a fair amount of time. Jealousy rose within him as she mentioned how she and Quill had become a couple, but he was comforted by the fact that that their story was unremarkable. Her man sounded like a plain fellow and uncouth--what sort of way was that to charm anybody into a relationship? One had to put at least a little effort into their language, to let their love interest know that they were thought of as something special. Judging by her blush when he used the right words, Sidonie did not prefer that sort of plainness to romance. He felt superior to her boyfriend in that sense, but the other man still had Sidonie’s heart. “Ah, will I?” he asked with a foolproof, relaxed smile. “I look forward to it…” he lied. Would Quill sense the feelings that he had for his girlfriend? He could sense potential trouble in their meeting.
