“Sidonie… I think we should break up…” Quill said quietly, bracing himself for her temper. She wasn’t going to be happy… But he thought maybe she would forgive him. The way she and Caleb looked at each other… It wasn’t fair to anyone involved for Quill and Sidonie to continue dating. She was his best friend, but it was obvious that they didn’t have the same spark that she and Caleb had. It would make her suffer, and Quill deserved to have a girlfriend who wanted him.
Sidonie stared at him. Had she imagined the words coming out of his mouth? “W-what?”
“It’s not going to work out.” Quill averted his eyes. “You’ve been spending a lot of time with Caleb… I don’t want to be cheated on…”
“He’s a friend!” Sidonie snapped defensively and narrowed her eyes.
“I know you better than anyone, Sidonie… You have feelings for him.”
“I do not!” Sidonie said petulantly. She did, but she wasn’t about to admit that Quill was right. She didn’t want to get dumped. As much as she wanted Caleb, it was easy to be with Quill. He was her best friend, and there weren’t cultural differences to cause fights.
“I’m sorry, Sidonie. It’s over.” Quill knew her well enough to know that she was lying.
In a pathetic attempt to retain a little of her dignity, Sidonie gave him one last glare and stormed off, leaving his family tent and returning to the temple. She stomped her way into the main room, trying so hard not to cry. She didn’t want to cry in front of anyone. Quill would find out and know that she had been upset. And then everyone would find out that she had been dumped because Quill thought she was some kind of whore. A whimper escaped her as she made her way to her room. She tried very hard not to catch the gaze and attention of the people who were around. She didn't want someone to stop her and ask her what was wrong. She just wanted to lock herself in her room and cry for a long time.

Almost the entire span of Caleb’s day, from the moment he awoke to the present, had consisted of reading Celest’s scriptures in his room. The door was open, in order to not be so rude as to shut out the temple staff, but aside from asking questions about how to interpret a passage or taking a break for a meal, he rarely put the book down. He had to make up for lost time, having spent last night bedridden with Sidonie by his side. Father Trent had advised him not to push himself after his collapse so in bed he remained, with the scripture readily available to him. But Sidonie was there and they talked up until he could tell that she was too tired to stay awake for much longer. He hadn’t wanted to convince her to go to bed, but what could he have done? It would be wrong of him to invite her to sleep in his room. He felt a stronger connection with Sidonie than he did with any other person. That she shared the same soul as his former lover only confused him—was it right to want her desperately because of that? Their past intimacy did not justify him wanting her to himself in spite of the obstacles. There was Quill, who seemed like an honest man. He couldn’t try to steal her away from him, yet he had looked at her and held her hand in ways that he shouldn’t have. And her commitment to Father Trent’s temple… If they were ever together, would the long distance between them hurt their relationship? There was so much in their way, but he wanted her. Caleb sighed and set the scripture aside, and then sat up in his bed. He couldn’t pay attention to Celest anymore that night. He got to his feet and stretched his arms above his head, standing on his tip toes, and then let his arms fall limp at his side. A whimper could be heard outside of his room, prompting him to go to the doorway and investigate. There, he saw Sidonie, nearly in tears. His chest felt tight; who made her feel that way? As she passed, he reached out a hand and placed it on her shoulder to stop her. “What’s wrong?” He stepped to the side slightly, hoping that she would read his gesture as an invitation into his room. They would be able to talk privately in there.

Thoughts of guilt and pain were running through Sidonie’s head. She should have spent some time with Quill the day before, and maybe she shouldn’t have told him that she was Caleb’s lover in her past life. Sidonie startled when she felt a warm hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see Caleb. Seeing him smashed the floodgates. She allowed herself to be guided into his room, tears streaming down her face. She still didn’t really want the entire temple to hear of her fate just yet. He was the only person she felt like she could trust with what had happened, and she wanted him to comfort her pain. His concern made her feel safe and wanted. At least someone cared about her.
She stood a little awkwardly in his room and rubbed at her eyes, trying to control the tears enough to get out what had happened. She breathed in sharply and let it back out in a ragged sob. “I … I … Quill…” She took another deep breath. “H-he dumped me.” She sobbed and looked at him with sad eyes. She wanted so badly for him to hug her and tell her that Quill was a stupid loser for dumping her. It wasn’t fair for her to have such strong feelings for Caleb. It hurt to get dumped and it hurt that Quill thought so lowly of her.

Though Caleb felt bad for Sidonie, he let out an internal victory roar. His rival was out of the way, so he would be free to make a move on his love interest. Oh… But that wouldn’t be right, would it? He looked into her teary blue eyes with a mixture of sympathy and restrained longing, and then looked to the door. Open. He stepped forward and shut it, hoping that it wouldn’t seem like he had salacious intentions. But, he did want privacy.
“Ah, I’m sorry…” Caleb put his hand on her shoulder to comfort her. He knew that he was being honest about that. While there were no bad feelings about her breaking up with Quill, it hurt to see her upset to tears. “Getting dumped can hurt…” His hand drifted from her shoulder to her neck, where he gently intertwined his fingers with her hair. The contact was electric—he thought of himself having more of her, causing his face to grow hot. He had to cool down. Caleb pulled his hand away and crossed one arm over his torso while he held the other up to finger the red moon pendant around his neck. He had to remember who he was and the vows he had taken. “I don’t know why anybody would want to break up with you… It’s a mistake.” Ah, now that wasn’t the honorable thing to say. But it was so hard to fight his feelings now that she was no longer attached and even if she had just been dumped.

Sidonie watched him close the door, glad that he had thought to do that. She didn’t want everyone hear her cry. She calmed down a little when Caleb places his hand on her shoulder. It was comforting to feel his touch. But then, Caleb’s platonic seeming gesture quickly became something more to her when he slid his hand into her hair. Sidonie sniffled and leaned slightly into his hand. “Uhuh… It hurts…” She said, distracted by his touch. Her shoulders slumped in disappointment when he removed his hand and his body language became more closed off. She didn’t understand… Was he toying with her?
His next comment incited her anger, mostly because she agreed with him. Quill’s’ reasons for dumping her were so stupid. She frowned, her lips still trembling from her crying. “B-because he’s a stupid jerk.” Getting the words out released another painful sob. “He… He said… he thought I would cheat….” She buried her face in her hands, crying harder now. “B-but I wouldn’t! I wouldn’t! …I’m not like that…” She shook her head. Quill had figured out her feelings very quickly, but not her intentions. Just because she liked Caleb… and wanted him more than anything, didn’t mean she had any intentions to act on that. Caleb would eventually leave the ice realm, and she had responsibilities here… Just because her feelings for Quill weren’t as intense, didn’t mean that she wanted to quit the relationship… He would stay in the ice realm. They would work well together… But no. This whole thing seemed really impulsive for Quill, which was like adding insult to injury. Normally he was more practical about relationships. “I wouldn’t…” She whimpered quietly.

Her positive reaction to his touch encouraged him to kiss her. He wanted to make her pain disappear. “I’m sorry…” He wanted her so badly that his chest ached… That was why he had to try to restrain himself. Sidonie was in a vulnerable position; who knew what she would accept while seeking comfort. Caleb would be taking advantage of her. But the thought of what her reaction could have meant lingered in his mind. Was she desperate for comfort or was she attracted to him as he was to her? As much as he wanted to know the truth, he had to hold back from asking her.
If only he could stick to his convictions when it came to dealing with Sidonie. When he had told himself that he couldn’t act on his emotions, he held her hand and stared into her lovely blue eyes in an attempt to let her know about his desire. How could he call himself a pious man if that was how he behaved?
Caleb nodded at her words, though he couldn’t bring himself to be angry with Quill. He attempted to justify how he felt in ways that didn’t relate to his feelings. Maybe their relationship had been rocky for a while, or maybe Quill didn’t feel that spark with her. He didn’t see her that often and the distance was too much for him to handle. But he hadn’t expected the real reason. Caleb stared at her for a moment, too shocked to immediately process what Sidonie said. “What do you mean?” He clenched his pendant in his hand and leaned towards her. “With who?” Was it right of him to assume that he was the reason Quill dumped her? In the moments that their eyes met, he could have sworn that he could see a stir of emotion in her, but he had been too afraid to have any conviction about it. What could he do about it now?

His question made her feel panicked. Maybe he didn’t believe her when she said she wouldn’t cheat. Or maybe he was incredulous that there was anyone for her to cheat on with. Sidonie lowered her hands from her face a little, to peek up at him. “W-with you…” She blushed. It was such an embarrassing way for him to find out that she liked him. “I… I told him about what the star charts said… And he didn’t like that I was spending time with you… H-he… I like… I like you a lot…” She blushed again and looked away, “And… he noticed…” She trailed off, feeling even more emotionally exposed. With the wounds from being dumped, sharing her feelings for Caleb… If he rejected her, she didn’t know if she would be able to handle it.
Realizing that perhaps her admission made her seem like Quill was justified in dumping her, she quickly amended it with “But that doesn’t mean I would have cheated.” She crossed her arms, sounding a little petulant. More than the pain of being dumped, it hurt that someone so close to her would think so poorly of her. She didn’t want Caleb to think that of her either. Right now, he was the person she felt closest too. She didn’t want to lose that.

Now that Caleb had what he had been dreaming of, he was still met with the same, mixed emotions. It would have been better if, because of her feelings for him, she left Quill. Now that she had been rejected by her boyfriend, was it moral to let his feelings be known? Would that make him “the other man”? He felt that being with Sidonie would give him the strength to handle that. His heart pounded in his chest as he stood in front of her, stricken with surprise. “I don’t think you would…” Her wording led him to believe that she realized that he felt the same way about her. In order to cheat with him, he would need to be willing to go through with it. Did she think that he liked her? “I’m sorry… It sounds like this is all my fault…” Like a pious man, he should have encouraged her to spend time with her boyfriend. But when he reflected on what he should have done, but didn’t, he couldn’t feel guilty. The opportunity for him to act on his feelings was there—he had to act on them. Hesitant, Caleb took Sidonie into his arms, hugging her chastely around the shoulders. It was difficult to resist holding her closer to his body and allowing his hands to stray lower; so much contact with her was overwhelming, but at the same time, he needed more from her. “I’m sorry that he hurt you…”

“T-thank you…” She sniffled and rubbed her eyes. “It’s so upsetting that someone I’ve been friends with since I was little would… would think t-that I’d do something like that…” Even though it hurt that Quill had dumped her, she didn’t think she could take him back after that, even if he begged. She didn’t have much tolerance for jealousy, and it made her feel like Quill really didn’t know her that well at all. Especially since he jumped to such an extreme measure, rather than talking about what he perceived to be the problem and giving her a chance to explain herself.
She frowned when Caleb tried to take the blame onto himself. “It’s not your fault at all. It’s Quill’s fault for misjudging me. And it’s Quill’s fault for not trusting me. If he had a problem with me spending time with you, he should have talked to me instead of ending the relationship.” It didn’t make any sense for this to be Caleb’s fault, unless he blatantly told Quill that they were doing something inappropriate. Not only was that a lie, but it also was something she didn’t think Caleb would do. And really, she didn’t think it was her fault either. Attraction wasn’t something a person could control, but she could control what she did about it. She didn’t think she had acted inappropriately. In most cases, if there was any other guest her, she would have been happy to talk to them until late at night. She liked hearing about other realms, and guests were rare enough that Quill used to understand if she spent more time talking to them than with him. He was around the village a lot more than guests were.
A lot of Sidonie’s pain and irritation was soothed by Caleb taking her into his arms. It felt good to have his warm body so close to hers. She wrapped her arms around him and leaned her head against his chest. His heart beat seemed so fast… She found she liked the way that he smelled. Everything about him was comforting, and yet… it felt like his touch was setting her desire on fire. But… he hadn’t really responded to her confession. At least not in anyway that she could be sure of… The way that he was hugging her could be a friendly hug, although it made her want more. She looked up at him with sad eyes when he made an apology. “Thank you…”

If Quill had noticed the way that Caleb looked at Sidonie, then he was justified in taking part of the blame. Not only would the burly elf notice his girlfriend’s feelings for a stranger, but also the stranger’s feelings for his girlfriend. Caleb felt that anyone would feel justified in being jealous and worrying about infidelity in a scenario like that. He made no further reassuring remarks, not wanting to hear more about Quill. As morally questionable as he found the idea of being able to grow closer to Sidonie, it was what he wanted, and he had Quill to thank for it. He had driven her right into his arms.
His body tingled when she rested her head against his chest—couldn’t she hear how fast his heart was beating? Gingerly, he pet her hair and slowly rubbed her back in an effort to sooth her, pleased and nervous that his intimate gesture earned no negative responses. Caleb drew in a sharp breath and evaded her gaze, feeling unable to look into her eyes again and not kiss her. Staring at them encouraged him to act on his every burning desire. He couldn’t allow himself to do that... He was a priest, dammit. He had vows that he had managed to keep for years. Their relationship couldn’t work… “I just think…” Caleb met her eyes again. “Maybe Quill noticed my feelings, too.” Slowly, he allowed himself to brush her hair behind her ear, and then rested his hand on her cheek and caressed it with his thumb. His eyes unconsciously begged her to act first, to alleviate him of the guilt that burdened him. “So…I’m sorry…”

Sidonie made a soft, happy noise of pleasure when Caleb started rubbing her back. She clutched the back of his shirt, not wanting him to stop. The only thing, perhaps, that would make it better would be if she was pressed up against his naked chest, with his warm hands rubbing her bare skin. It was very hard for her to remember why she was so upset with Quill. Or that she even was upset. She had never felt even a fraction of this intense of desire or connection with Quill.
She felt a sudden flash of fear when he evaded her eyes. But when he looked back at her… His words made her feel much better. A slow smile spread across her face, and her eyes sparkled with joy. He liked her back! He admitted that he had feelings for her! She leaned into his hand, enjoying his gentle touch. She kept her gaze locked onto his eyes… He was so beautiful… His apology barely registered with her. She didn’t think that his liking her was anything to feel sorry for. Instead, she leaned forward and kissed him.

There was amusement and comfort to be had in Sidonie’s response to having her back rubbed. What other turn-ons did she have in common with him and what were her own? And would he find out the answer to both parts of the question tonight? Everything about her responsiveness to his touch barely fed his desire and aroused him. There was more than primal lust between them, but that night he found himself wanting to give in to unrestrained passion. He allowed himself to be taken by her kiss for a few moments, weaving his fingers through her hair, and then he broke away and stared into her eyes. They both wanted the same thing… “I...I don’t know if I can do this…” Calling himself a hypocrite under his breath, he hastily locked the door to the guest room and then took her into his arms. More kisses came as he found himself hesitant until he attempted one more excuse. "I can't... I don't have any protection." Of course, they had other ways of satisfying their desires, but he was supposed to avoid carnal pleasures, not indulge

When Caleb broke away, she smiled at him, looking into his eyes. She wanted him, badly. She tugged gently at his shirt. She wanted it off. She stopped when he spoke. She didn’t understand. Why wouldn’t he be able to be with her? Did he not really want her? Did he still feel guilty about Quill and her breaking up? Was it too soon? She felt so confused. “I want to…” She said quietly. It hurt that he might not want her, or thought that she was still too connected to Quill. But she felt better when he locked the door. He didn’t intend to leave, and he wanted privacy. She wrapped her arms around him, feeling good that he was holding her again and kissing her. She kissed him back passionately. “Mm… It’s okay… The medicine I’m taking to make sure my injury heals right… it also prevents me from getting pregnant.” She reached up and caressed his cheek. She kissed him again. Sidonie, breaking away, sat down on the bed, and looked up at him invitingly.

“I want to, too...” But, he told himself that he wasn’t the type of man to sleep with somebody that he barely knew, even if it felt as if they had known each other for ages. He wasn’t the type to take advantage of somebody on the rebound, but he wanted her too badly. With Sidonie enthusiastic and free from the risk of pregnancy, there was little incentive to be gained in refusing her that stood out to him. The night could be theirs… He obliged her request by untying the sash around his waist and he started to unbutton his robe when she kissed him again. He could do this forever… Well, not really. Following her lead, he sat on the bed close to her and wrapped an arm around her waist. Gently, he moved the collar of her shirt aside and then kissed the nape of her neck. His hands wandered as he leaned back onto the bed and pulled her on top of him.

Sidonie shivered when he kissed her neck. He was really sitting there, next to her. It was really going to happen, wasn’t it? The thought filled her with pleasure. She giggled when he pulled her on top of him. She leaned over him to kiss him again, her hands trying to finish the job of unclothing him, before starting on her own clothes.
When they were done, Sidonie was content and perhaps a little bit in love with her dark haired priest. Or at least, she was convinced they were meant to come together like this. Her past life, that they met, that Quill dumped her… It seemed too much like fate for her to think that this was simply lust. She cuddled close to Caleb, falling asleep to the sound of his breathing.
