Caleb stirred in his sleep the next morning to the sensation of the warm body that he held to his chest. Not wanting to awaken and face his mistake just yet, his hand slid over one of her breasts and he kissed the back of her head. “Good morning…” …No, that was an idiotic, hormone-fueled gesture that helped him get to where he was right now. Caleb retracted his hand and sat up in bed, pulling the covers up to his chin to fight the chill, but failed to prevent the cold metal red moon pendant around his neck from giving him a reminder. He looked at the pale woman lying beside him and exhaled. What was he supposed to say to her? He had spent so much time tempering his lust only to end up in bed with a woman twenty years younger than him. Not only had he broken his vows, he had taken advantage of somebody vulnerable. He had been there before… But maybe the bond that they shared could bring them somewhere meaningful from one night of shameful passion.

He reached for the long-sleeved black shirt that lay at the end of the bed and pulled it over his head before he made the bold move to leave the warm blankets to retrieve his pants. In a moment, he had buttoned up his black priest’s robe and tied his sash around his waist. Caleb checked himself in the mirror as he adjusted his pendant and fixed his bedhead and then stared at Sidonie’s image. How would they work out how to leave the room without catching the attention of the people in the temple? Ah, maybe… “Are you hungry? Do you want to wait here while I get breakfast for us?”

Sidonine sighed happily, easing out of sleep when Caleb started stirring. “Mm, good morning,” she murmured. It was a little disappointing that he removed his hand: the thought of having sex with him again had crossed her mind already. She stretched, and then sat up so that she could see what he was doing. Or rather, briefly admire his naked body. Why did he have to put his clothes on so quickly? Especially the shapeless robe… She supposed the room was probably too cold for him to just lounge around naked in… What a shame. And his primping in the mirror seemed to her like maybe he was getting ready for the day. She wished they could just stay there though, lounging in bed together. She didn’t want to face the people of the temple just yet. She had neglected her duties last night to stay with Caleb, and it was bound to be common knowledge that she had been dumped because she had been spending time with Caleb… She hated living someplace where everyone knew everyone’s business.

She caught his gaze in the mirror and blushed, looking away to make it seem like an accident that she was looking that way. “Uhuh. I’m hungry…” She didn’t want him to leave, but the thought that he’d come back and they could eat breakfast privately was a nice thought... “Okay, I’ll wait for you.” She yawned and stretched again, and glanced around for her clothes. She’d rather sit there as a temptation for the dark haired priest, but it was a little awkward with him fully clothed.

“Ah, I’ll be right back, then. Get dressed…” Caleb grinned at her and then unlocked the door just a crack, first checking that nobody was in front of his door, about to knock to wake him. He shut the door as soon as he slid out and looked down both sides of the hallway. Clear. Eyes directed at the floor, he kept a low profile as he walked to the kitchen, muttering his good mornings to staff members as they passed by him. His mind was far too distracted to be caught up in any conversations with staff members. As he reflected on the night, he had acted irresponsibly. He should have resisted her. She had come into his room to talk to him about her breakup and not five minutes after her tears were gone, they were occupied with each other. He was awful, especially now that he regretted his actions, but part of him was happy. But, did Sidonie want a relationship already? He doubted that she would. She had just come out of a yearlong relationship. Caleb gathered food for two onto a plate, a slice of bread, cheese, and meat for both of them, making up the excuse that he was in the middle of a study session.

He made his way back to his room and opened the door just enough for him to squeeze through with the food and then set it onto the bedside desk. Sighing, he rubbed his temple with one hand and turned to his coffee maker. He had a headache already. “Do you want any?” he asked, gesturing to it. Once he had his coffee, they could have a reasonable discussion about the status of the relationship.

She smiled at him as he left. After the door was securely closed, she stood up and started gathering her clothes, getting dressed as she went. She glanced briefly in the mirror again, blushed at her impropriety and sat down on the bed instead, fidgeting with her clothes and the bed sheet. She hoped that Caleb didn’t get stopped, or asked about where she was. She hoped that she didn’t get in trouble. She didn’t want her happy night to be marred by embarrassment and trouble. She didn’t want Caleb to think she was more trouble than what she was worth.

She beamed at Caleb when he got back, happy to see him again. “Oh… No thank you.” She assumed he was making coffee, which didn’t seem very appetizing to her. “Are you alright?” He seemed stressed or tired… Determined to comfort him, she stood up and touched his arm, looking up at him. She wanted to kiss him again, to caress him until he was relaxed and content. But she waited to see what he had to say.

“Yes, I’m fine…” Caleb placed his hand over hers and gave her a small, appreciative smile before he returned to making his coffee. “I just need my coffee. I’ve been drinking it for so long that I get a headache when I don’t have any.” The headaches and grumpiness should have been a warning to break his addiction to coffee, but Caleb was a stubborn man who enjoyed his coffee and staying awake for long hours. Brewing his coffee would give him the time to prolong addressing their night together. He didn’t want to have another serious discussion with Sidonie while he was grumpy. Soon enough, he poured himself a mug of hot coffee and breathed in the aroma and then let out a sigh.

“Shall we eat?” Caleb took hold of the knife and sliced their food and then pushed Sidonie’s plate towards her. He took a moment to eat a slice of bread with meat and cheese and to take a sip of coffee and then leaned back against the bed. How to go about addressing the problem… He felt that it was going to be a sensitive conversation for the pair. “What’s the status of our relationship now? Are we…together?”

She smiled when he returned the touch. He was so lovely… “Oh, alright.” She was glad it was just because of the coffee, rather than being upset or unhappy about what had happened. She sat down on the edge of the bed to watch him as he finished brewing it. It smelled nice, but she doubted a hot bitter drink would also taste good.

“Yes!” She smiled and started eating the offered food. She was hungrier than what she thought, and the simple food tasted good. Or maybe she was just pleased about her handsome company. She blushed at Caleb’s sudden question. “I… I…” She lowered her hand, holding a piece of cheese. How was she supposed to answer that? She wanted him, but it would be difficult. And the way he phrased the question made it difficult to tell if he wanted her to say yes or no. At least, to her. What if he was trying to let her down in a round about way that this was only going to be a one night stand? “I want to be together… If you also want it…” She glanced away, blushing and unsure.

“I do…” Caleb kept his voice steady and mellow to avoid any unnecessary intonations that Sidonie may have interpreted to be negative. He was treading on a sensitive subject and he wanted to avoid hurt feelings if he could. “But I feel like we had sex too soon… It was difficult to say ‘no.’” Last night had been a tense struggle with himself and reason had lost. “It’s not that I’m a prude, but someone in my position shouldn’t have behaved that way…” If his staff and the congregation heard of his actions, what would they think of him? He sighed and ran a hand through his hair and then straightened it. “I’m supposed to be chaste…” What was he supposed to tell Pathos about his irresponsible actions? He could picture his mentor being happy for him… Together, he and Sidonie could have eased into a physical relationship rather than spoiling it all in one night. He could have put an official end to his vows for the sake of love…

“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to ruin the mood…” Caleb ran a hand through his hair again and looked into Sidonie’s eyes. Here he was, going on about himself when his words may have been hurting her. “You still want to be with me, right? I probably sound like nothing but trouble…”

Sidonie looked at him and smiled. She was so glad that he wanted a relationship too. She didn’t know how they would manage, but they would find a way. However, Caleb had to keep talking, didn’t he? Her expression fell. She stared at her knees in stunned silence, her face turning red. It was all she could do not to cry. It wasn’t that she disagreed with his concerns. She was worried about her position and what the people of the temple would think. But she couldn’t actually regret what she had done. And it hurt that he had wanted to reject her, and felt like he should have. She didn’t think she could have handled two rejections in one day.

“You wanted to say no?” Her voice was unstable, and she gave him a brief glance. It didn’t help, because seeing his face while thinking that made her cry. She rubbed at her eyes and looked away again. “I… I’m sorry…” She sniffled. “M-maybe I’m selfish… But… I wouldn’t trade it for anything… Even if everyone is mad at me for starting a relationship so soon…” She rubbed her eyes again. “I was really happy…” She glanced back up at him. “The trouble is worth it…” She couldn’t help but smile a little. “I want to be with you…”

Caleb could already tell that his words had hurt Sidonie. He wanted to hold and comfort her as he spoke; however, he wanted to keep the discussion serious. Physical comfort could be distracting and because of the topic. When he was addressing that they needed to take things slowly if they were to have a romantic relationship, then acting sensual would conflict with his words. He hadn’t meant to make the conversation an embarrassing experience for her, but it would have been difficult not to. He looked away from her at the same time, ashamed of himself for not being stronger when he had tried to resist her. It made him look like a jerk.

“I should have said ‘no’… I wasn’t supposed to engage in sexual activities.” He looked away from her. The experience was humbling in a way. Even though he was meant to be a figure for others to look up to, he made mistakes. He was far from perfect… It would be a blow to his status if his congregation got word that he spent the night with a woman that he barely knew. “You don’t have to apologize to me. I’m the one bringing the bad news. But I mean, even though I’m being serious, I…really enjoyed it, too.” But, if he could, he would go back in time and stop himself from making the mistake. He didn’t tell her that… He could be thankful that Sidonie still wanted to be with him in spite of the trouble he made over their night together.

“Why?” Sidonie asked plaintively. To her, it felt like the gods must have brought them together for this. She couldn’t understand why he felt wasn’t supposed to have been with her, or why anyone would think they were supposed to be chaste. Was it some weird thing with his temple? Although she did study here, she wasn’t terribly well versed with the details of what priests had to go through. She knew that Father Trent had a wife…

She blushed and smiled at him. As upset as she was that he seemed to have regrets, to hear that he had at least enjoyed it was enough to start patching that hurt. It made it seem like he was just worried about the consequences than actually regretting that they were together. She worried about the consequences too, but her positive feeling about being with him were enough to make her feel like she could deal with that when it came, and that they could get through it. She reached out and took his hand. She wanted physical comfort, to know that he wasn’t just going to push her away.

“So… What do we do, then?” She felt awkward asking, but if he was upset about having sex with her, she wanted to know what his idea of this relationship was going to be. It was going to be difficult when he had to leave… She wanted to be with him.

Her question initially caught Caleb off guard. He was sure that he had already explained his reason, but he realized that telling her he was supposed to be chaste was a vague answer. “When I achieved priesthood, I chose to take the vow…” During his years as an acolyte, Caleb had come to terms with the fact that he couldn’t treat relationships properly. “I dated a little after Moshe passed away, but for the wrong reasons. I was selfish…” He had been able to admit to himself that he had been treating his libido as something more important than a meaningful relationship. It wasn’t appropriate behavior, so he had put an end to it.

He squeezed her hand in response and with his free hand, he pet the side of her head. “It’s not going to be easy for us…” Caleb let out a sigh. It was unreasonable to expect either of them to leave their career to be with the other. “As much as I want to stay with you, I’m going to have to go back to Florentior in a few weeks. We’ll have to make the most of our time.” It was early to think so far ahead in the future, but he could foresee a future living together with Sidonie. He didn’t want to lose the strong bond that they shared.

“Oh… I didn’t realize that was a vow that priests could take…” She felt bad that it was related to religion and not just some weird thing that he had decided to do. She could understand him being upset about failing to keep his vow. She thought she probably still would have been miffed if he had used it as a reason to reject her yesterday… She knew she could be overly emotional sometimes. But now that she knew exactly why he was upset, she felt less miserable about him having regrets.

She leaned into his hand. She was glad that he wasn’t going to jump back to the physical distance they had before the night before. “I know…” It was distressing that they both had set paths before them, with very little chances of intercepting each other again.
What could she do about it? She was expected to finish her training and be the guide for her family’s tribe. At the moment though, she wanted nothing more than to stow away with Caleb and go home with him instead. That was such a big step though. If she made such a huge choice on a whim, she thought that there might end up being reason to regret it. “We’ll be able to write each other…” It wasn’t the same, not when she craved his presence. A letter rarely conveyed the same spark that conversation in person did. She took the moment to cuddle up against him, wanting to be close to him as they faced the prospect of being very far away. She didn’t want to have to face her responsibilities for the day.

“It isn’t required of us, but there are priests who choose to take it for different reasons. Some do it because they believe having a partner or being distracted by carnal relationships will distance them from their faith and their studies. The scholarly aspects of the church are very important…” Caleb rubbed the scales on his neck through his turtleneck. He preferred to keep his reason to himself; avoiding relationships because in the past he misused his partners did not make him look good. But he was not above using his past experiences for something positive. His flaws made him relatable to troubled patrons.

He pet her face in response to having her lean into his hand, wanting to maintain the physical contact. “It’s unfortunate that we live so far apart from each other…” It was crazy how he was already anticipating every day life without Sidonie. They still hardly knew anything about one another, but he didn’t want to leave her. He let out a sigh and hugged her to his chest. “I know… But I'll miss you...” Letters were better than nothing, but it wasn’t what he really wanted from the relationship. Closing his eyes, for now, he wanted to enjoy the closeness until he was called upon to go about his day and to not think about leaving her.

Sidonie nodded at his explanation. After last night, she could understand how easily it was to get distracted from work. She hadn’t really had that problem with Quill… She hoped that if the members of the temple had an issue with her sudden change of boyfriend, that they wouldn’t show their disapproval in front of Caleb. Was she supposed to suffer just because Quill didn’t trust her? If he didn’t want to make their relationship work, then there was no reason for her to sit around miserable when there was someone who thought better of her.

She sighed and wrapped her arms around him. “It is…” Perhaps they would find their feelings muted after being apart for so long. She didn’t want it to happen. She didn’t want him to leave. But… maybe it would be easier. It seemed like it would be difficult if they were apart… and both of them had important tasks that they couldn’t just abandon. The thought that they might not be able to make it work made her want to cry. She pressed her face against his chest, wanting to stay close. “I will too…” She sounded a little sad. Why couldn’t things be easy?

A little while later, someone knocked softly on the door. Sidonie glanced over at it, and then up at Caleb, not sure what to do. She wanted to hide. She wanted to cry, because some moron was interrupting their time together. She sniffled.

Caleb squeezed Sidonie gently. There were few people that he could turn to for advice on long distance relationships. The priests whom he knew had experience were in subordinate positions. It would be improper of him to go to his students for personal advice and he didn’t think anybody in his family was ever in the same position. Pathos would have to listen to his troubles, as usual and perhaps he would be able to offer some wisdom. Caleb needed to face him sooner or later regarding the breaking of his vows, but Caleb already knew that Pathos would support his actions. He really took pleasure in gossiping about the love life of others and nosing about. It could be annoying, but Caleb appreciated that he cared enough to be a bother.

“I think we can make this relationship something worth the distance…” It frightened him that they could grow apart when he left for Florentior, but it also seemed crazy that they would let each other go. How could they when they had such a great connection? Gently, he held her chin and tilted her head up to kiss her. “We’ll find a way…” It was so soothing just to hold her, that he found himself annoyed when there was a knock on the door. And then he remembered, he had work to accomplish. Or Trent was looking for him, Sidonie… Or he knew they were together. What if it was Quill? Letting out a sigh, Caleb reluctantly let go of Sidonie and answered the door.
