Father Trent stood on the other side of the door, waiting patiently for Caleb to answer. They had looked everywhere for Sidonie, except for here. It seemed a likely place to find her if she had went missing in the middle of the day, but at night? In any case, no one had wanted to wake up their guest. “Hello. I’m sorry for bothering you this early, but have you seen Sidonie? She’s been missing since last night.” He sighed. He didn’t like having to bother him for this.
Sidonie blushed hard when she heard Father Trent’s voice. She was going to be in so much trouble… She brought her knees up to her chest and silently willed Caleb to tell him no, and come back to hold her. Somehow she doubted he would do that. He felt too guilty, and he didn’t seem like the type of person to lie to a host, or a fellow priest.

Caleb had dreaded meeting Father Trent at the door. If anybody had to find out that Sidonie was in his room, he would prefer an acolyte over her mentor and the head of the temple. “Hello… Don’t worry about it. I was just sitting down to breakfast.” He tried to act casual. He felt his face grow hot when he was told that Sidonie was mentioned. Of course they would notice that she had been missing since night… The staff knew everyone’s business in a place like a temple. Word would have gotten to Father Trent eventually. Caleb let out a sigh, rubbed his neck and opened the door to full swing. “She’s here… We were having breakfast. I guess we had everyone worried, didn’t we?”
He knew Sidonie would understand why he couldn’t lie to father Trent. Once the older priest figured out what was going on, Caleb would do his best to lessen the trouble that Sidonie would get into. As the older man and the one in a higher position, it was up to him to take responsibility for his actions. He really should have known better than to get caught with Sidonie in his room.

Trent felt a little disappointed to find her there. The way that Caleb had admitted it sounded like he wouldn’t have said it if Trent hadn’t asked. Which meant that they probably had been up to something. He had thought better of them both… Even if they shared a bond from Sidonie’s past life, it seemed flighty of her to do something so… irresponsible. He stepped into the room, frowning. “Yes, she did.” He looked over to Sidonie, who was looking like she wished she was buried under the snow right now. “You had duties last night, and you didn’t show up to them.” Rather than immediately confront them on what this situation looked like, he figured it would be better to start with Sidonie being careless about her duties. “You weren’t in good standing for telling secrets to begin with.”
Sidonie meekly nodded. “I’m sorry, Father Trent.” She really did not feel comfortable sharing the reason why. “I was upset… and I lost track of time…” She blushed and stared at her knees. She felt so stupid. She should have left last night or earlier this morning, but it was so hard to tear herself away from Caleb.

Caleb grimaced inwardly. He hadn’t known that Sidonie neglected her duties to the temple to spend the night with him. As a priest, he couldn’t be expected to defend her for failing to do her job while she was perfectly capable of it. If he had known that she needed to leave, he could have told her to do so. But he supposed that an “if” wouldn’t mean much to Father Trent. Even if he might have convinced her, the truth was that she spent the entire night with him. If only he hadn’t invited her into his room, coaxed her into kissing him… Then she wouldn’t be in trouble with the Father and he wouldn’t look like a dirtbag who took his inferiors to bed.
Not wanting to stay silent while Sidonie was lectured, Caleb supposed that he could try to lessen Father Trent’s disapproval, or at least keep Sid from getting angry with him for staying silent. “I apologize as well. I should have realized that she had to perform her duties every night.” It was all he could do for now. She was young, but she had been raised at the temple, so there was no excuse other than letting a little selfishness get the better of her.

Father Trent nodded slightly at Caleb, acknowledging his apology. It was sounding more and more like they had slept together, which… well… it was rather unfortunate. “Why were you upset? What happened?”
Sidonie felt a little uncomfortable with Caleb apologizing. It was her responsibility, and she messed up. Although, honestly, she wouldn’t have went even if Caleb had known. Or if she hadn’t went to Caleb in the first place. It was hard to concentrate on work when she was upset. “Quill… he dumped me…” Saying the words again sent another wave of misery over her. “I… I was going to go cry in my room… b-but then… Caleb saw that I was upset… And he comforted me…” She blushed. It was so awkward to confess this in front of both Trent and Caleb. “Even… even if he hadn’t seen me… I don’t think I would have remembered to go do my duties…”
Trent frowned. “You should have came and talked to me if you wanted the night off. Everyone was worried.” He didn’t think this was going to go well for Sidonie. If the rest of the town found out that they had spent the night together right after Quill dumped her, they probably wouldn’t be kind. He turned his attention to Caleb. “I thought you had taken vows? Or am I misunderstanding what happened here?”

Caleb felt his face flush as Sidonie explained. Yes. “Comforted” was a polite way to explain their situation. But they were more than that. He wished she had told that to Father Trent, so it did not appear that he had taken advantage of her in her vulnerable state or that it was just a fling. The way she explained things, there was also little room for confusion about what had transpired between them. He was thankful that Father Trent was not treating her harshly. If it had been an unmarried Lilnian couple before a priest, or even before their peers, they would be judged cruelly.
Now Father Trent was addressing him… His face grew hot again. “Yes…” Caleb ran a hand over his face and then sat up straight. “Yes, I did. You’re not misunderstanding anything…” As humiliating as it was to tell Trent about his bedroom activities, he knew that a man of the cloth could be confided in. “I’ll be informing Father Pathos of my actions...” Thinking of Pathos’s reaction put an amused smile on his face, which he covered with his hand. He would be happy for Caleb… He had never encouraged him to take the vow. “I don’t intend to take them again. I intend to be with Sidonie, whatever hardships we may face…”

Trent nodded to Caleb’s explanation, although… Trent didn’t want Sidonie to get hurt, but he wondered if she would have been better off if it was merely a one night stand. Sidonie had a job ahead of her that would make it difficult to associate with another realm, and Caleb did poorly in the snow. He supposed that they would figure it out though. “Alright.” It wasn’t his place to punish Caleb for breaking a vow, but he wanted to make sure that the priest that was in charge of Caleb would find out. Some priests were dishonest, unfortunately. “Sidonie, after you’re finished eating, you’re to come to my office.” After receiving her confirmation, he excused himself and left.
Sidonie wanted to melt into the floor when Trent spoke to Caleb, and even more so when he answered. And yet, as embarrassing as this was, she had a horrible feeling that it was just going to get worse. Even if she hadn’t been dating Quill the day before, most Nilvalians didn’t appreciate romantic mingling with foreigners.
She flashed Caleb a shy smile when he claimed his intentions. As miserable as this situation was, it made her heart flutter to hear him say that he intended to be with her to someone else. It made it feel more real.
“Yes sir.” She said, nodding. When he was gone, she sighed, and glanced over to Caleb. “I’m sorry about that…” She had a fairly good idea that she would get more of a lecture later, and chores on top of that. But she still felt bad that she had been lectured in front of Caleb.

Caleb’s stomach was in knots. He knew that Sidonie would face punishment for her behavior while he would be congratulated by his mentor. Perhaps Pathos would see to it that he faced some consequences to appease the community. Not all priests would be so forgiving of vows broken with an inferior. Pathos was rarely judgmental of him… Caleb could remember how understanding he had been when he had sought a relationship to ease his longing for a physical relationship and he had seen to it that Caleb put a stop to it before his partner was too invested.
He nodded a goodbye to Father Trent before he left and then let out a sigh along with Sidonie. He cast a glance towards her and showed a defeated smile. “It’s alright. I’d rather him find out directly rather than through the grapevine…” Some priest or acolyte would have seen Sidonie leave the guest room and with the talk of her disappearance and her split with Quill travelling around the temple, news would have spread quickly. “Why don’t you finish up and go visit him? I should start my day, too…” He didn’t want to keep Father Trent waiting and he had scriptures to read. Though he wanted to spend more time with her, they both had responsibilities to attend to.

Sidonie sighed and nodded. The grapevine was a pain in the neck. “I know…” She looked at the food. “I guess… I’d rather spend more time with you.” She fidgeted with the sleeves of her shirt. She didn’t want to face Trent again. He’d set her to doing something dull, like filing paperwork or making copies of other people’s notes. She deserved it, for failing to do her duty, but it wasn’t fair. She wanted to be with Caleb. Reluctantly, she did what he suggested anyway. Maybe he didn’t even want her around. Maybe he thought she was irresponsible. She sighed and finished eating food.
