Kiyza's Dragon Ball Movie FAQ!

I believe that everything deserves some sort of a question and answer page, so here is mine. If anyone has a good question to ask, please feel free and I¡¯ll be more than happy to put it on this page.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things I thought of:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. When are new chapters put up?

A. Well, I used to upload a new chapter on Fanfiction.net once a week, but due to the fact I’m rather lazy, that eventually turned into two weeks, then a month, and at this point it’s been more than a month since my last update over there. However, at the moment, I’m going back and revising my chapters, and when I get done, Chapter 7 will finally be up. For those who read the story exclusively here on Antifanfiction, whenever I finish my revisions and there’s an available internet connection, I’ll put it up. Just be patient, as I do quite a bit other than this; I moderate a forum, role play, do fanart, write other fanfiction, play video games, and sometimes do school work

Q. How many chapters will there be when the story is complete?

A. At the moment, I’m aiming for around 13~15 chapters total. You see, I’m viewing this as a movie storyboard, so each chapter represents if you had a DVD and skipped through scenes, each chapter would represent one of them. Say these scenes are around 5 to 7 minutes each. That would give me a movie with a little more than an hour and a half of screen time.

Q. How did you come up with the plot? Did you reference Dragonball Evolution?

A. Well, you see, I’ve actually been planning this story for a long time, probably since last August. Every now and then, before I went to bed, I’d plan out a portion of it in my mind. After a few months, I had the entire story planned out and started writing it down. However, I forgot to plan little minor details, like the location of one of the dragon balls, and had to improvise with the pirate treasure thing.

There’s only one thing that I took from Dragonball Evolution, and that was the idea of putting together the first arc of the series with the Piccolo Daimao one. I figured it would need some sort of villain so it doesn’t come off as being too childish or unactiony. (is that a word?) If people are coming to a movie based on Dragon Ball, they expect there to be the action that “Z” had, not the childish perverse humor and adventure that the earliest parts of the series had. In the end, I decided to go somewhere down the middle and merge the arcs into one. I haven’t referenced Dragonball Evolution for anything else, and have been using the manga and anime as a basis for the story so far.

Q. Did you create a draft of the movie before now? If so, how much of it was written? How did it differ?

A. The original draft for the movie was the first fanfic that I wrote, and it’s stored somewhere on my computer. It was never published anywhere on the internet. However, the writing’s terrible compared to this and littered with all sorts of errors. The original draft lasted until Chi-Chi was introduced, and it was vastly different from the current story. It was created as a rewrite of Dragonball Evoultion, as opposed to being a completely new movie from the ground up. In all honesty, the biggest change between them was that Goku didn’t go to high school. Instead of the demons (or mazoku if you prefer that) that are serving Piccolo Daimao in this movie, Tenshinhan was his servant and played the same role as Mai (is that who the girl with the large breasts is supposed to be?) in Dragonball Evolution. As for what wasn’t written, I had the idea of Goku turning into an Ozaru and fighting Piccolo, as well as revealing that Piccolo was the one responsible for creating the dragon balls. However, all of this was changed during this movie, as it’s more of a “from the ground up” sort of thing.

Q. How do you decide what terms to use?

A. I’m planning another sort of mini guide involving all of the translation type things that I’ve been using for terminology, so I’ll put a link to that whenever I get around to it here.

Q. Who would you cast to play *insert character here*?

A. I might make a guide for this too. I haven’t entirely decided, but I think the only person I’d really like to have in the movie if it were an actual film is James Marsters to play the role of Piccolo Daimao. He just seemed so excited to play the role, and he really seemed to know Piccolo well.

Q. Is Goku white or Asian in this movie?

A. He’s black. :P All jokes aside, I don’t care whether he’s white or Asian, he could even be Mexican for all I care so long as he acts like Goku. In all honesty, he’s a Saiyan, so he shouldn’t exactly be either. But that brings up the fact that I have some difficulty seeing Vegeta as Asian, since most of his attack names are in English. (Yes, in Japanese they’re English) A friend of mine actually suggested that they just get someone who’s mixed between the two to play the role as a sort of compromise. But realistically, that could be a problem, as I don’t know any teenaged white/Asian hybrid actors.

Q. Why isn't this Z?

A. As much as I like Z, I honestly prefer the original Dragon Ball, but this isn’t strictly a matter of author preference. If you start with Z, it gets really confusing. Just ask anyone who watched the series beginning with Z and has no familiarity with the original Dragon Ball. (There are a lot of those) First of all, the title looses its meaning, since there’s no real search for the dragon balls, just a lot of fighting. I figure they need to be searched for at least once. Second of all, you don’t really get as much background information on the characters. Piccolo and Bulma would probably be the biggest faults in this. If you don’t start with the original Dragon Ball, you seriously wonder why Bulma’s even there at all. And for Piccolo, you really don’t even get a feel for the character. If you start with Z, you don’t even know that he was a villain at one point, you have no clue what his connection with Kami is, why the dragon balls disappear when he dies, the last of which is a pretty major plot point, as without it, there’d be no Namek, no Freeza, and no Super Saiyans. You know, unless I could come up with some conceivable excuse. (NASA sent them to space?) All in all, it’s just better to start with the original story and work our way up to Z.

Q. Does that mean there'll be a sequel?

A. This entire movie was written with the intention of writing a sequel, which is one reason why it differs so much from its original draft. As for whether or not I actually write one, only time will tell, but I would like to write one if I’m not too busy. I mean, I squeezed everything so far into my schedule, didn’t I?

Q. What would the plot for the sequel be like?

A. I’d like to do another arc merge for a sequel. My original thought was simply to have the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai constitute an entire sequel, maybe with a bit of training in there. But then I started to realize that I couldn’t make the length of a movie with nothing more than a martial arts tournament and training; not even The Karate Kid really did that. So I’m thinking about incorporating the Red Ribbon Army. I’m also thinking about introducing Kami, but since I’m so into the Japanese version, I’d probably refer to him as “God” on much more than one occasion (Since that is what Kami means in this situation) and I don’t want to offend anyone who’s very religious. But then again, coming back from the dead is a major plot point in the series, so I don’t think there are too many people who would mind. I’d try to keep religious jokes to a minimum, though. Mr. Popo’s out though, for obvious reasons.

Q. Will you make a movie storyboard for anything else?

A. I would really like to do one for Naruto some time, but I haven’t seen the series in ages and have only read the manga and watched it dubbed. Plus, I have little connection with the fanbase. I only want to make a movie about the first arc of that series though. If I get further into One Piece, I could see myself writing something about that too. I’d like both of those series to actually end before I write a movie based on them. But if I’m going by complete series that I’m fond of, Yu Yu Hakusho would definitely be something I could see myself doing something with, but I haven’t seen or read it in ages. All in all, I’d like to finish with this movie before I even consider doing something else.

Q. From Ruby: Will Pilaf be coming into this story? It's been awhile since I read this at FFN, and I don't remember him being in it.

A. I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but I don't think Pilaf will be in this story as a major character, just because I've crammed so much in to it already. However, you gave me a great idea to make a cameo for him. Perhaps he could end up being the king of the world.

(Question Implied)
Q. From Ruby and peggs9: What are all of those weird symbols? Why are they there? Can you get rid of them?

Oh my gosh, everyone else can see them!? I thought it was just me! Those symbols are Hangul, Korean phonetic characters. I have my computer set so that Korean text doesn't appear as boxes and "!?'+!" type text so I keep up with updates regarding Dragon Ball Online. I'll have to restart my computer and set it back to its normal English language setting whenever I post then. But don't worry, I'll get rid of the Hangul. (Fixed as of 7/7/10)

Edit: Okay, so I uninstalled the Korean language pack and fixed up all of my fics. They should all be working in relatively good order now. (Fixed as of 7/28/10)

I'm still loving this story, Kiyza. :)
Though I'm not a huge fan of Goku, I like him alot better as a kid. And reading about him in the early DB days is always fun.
I liked the part where he tells the dino, "Get away from her! Can't you see she's gotta pee!" I think you wrote your own versien of that scene really well, and I would of laughed but I'm using a library computer now. In other words....sssshhhh! (lol in the inside)

The FAQ section is a brilliant idea, and I can see it as being very useful as well as informative to readers. I need to figure out something like that for my review area.

I'm wondering though, will Pilaf be coming into this story? It's been awhile since I read this at FFN, and I don't remember him being in it. (go ahead and shoot me if i'm wrong; i can be forgetful at times ^^; ). His goofy antics helped make the show so much funnier, and if I remember right, it was him and his buds that set Piccolo loose.

And thanks for not bashing the DBE movie this time. I know I really shouldn't of blown up at you so badly over that. I am still very sorry about causing such an uproar like that. But you can atleast say that that movie had one good thing about it:it helped bring us together! :)

I did update my FAQ with that question. I think a cameo for him would be just enough of him, but I just have too many other characters already in the plot.

And yeah, it was this story that brought the two of us together. And my policy about responding to flamers.

ok, well i'm fan of db as well as dbz, so i decided to start reading this (read the first post), and i thought it was a really good idea to show some interaction between Goku and his grandpa. you don't see much in the show, and old gohan is a pretty cool character. It was quite in character and well written too.

one problem i have is that, in all the subsequent posts there are all these symbols embedded in the text... and it makes the words hard to read. I don't now if everyone else can see this or if its some compatibility thing with my computer...

so, so far i've just read the first post, hope this helps :)

You're not the only one, peggs. I've noticed those symbols too. I just didn't want to be rude and say anything. It is a bit tricky reading with all those things though...

Thanks for the positve comments on that Peg. I spent quite a bit of time revising that particular section to make it more realisitc. I've written that scene about 3 or 4 times. It was also a part of the original draft for the movie, and much of that's stayed the same.

Now about those characters. That's been added to the FAQ.

Hope that helps to clear some things up. Like I said, I'll get around to it as soon as possible. Right now, though, I'm going to work on reviewing Ruby's fic.

Edit: It turns out I don't need to uninstall the language pack. I just fixed it.

right, i have finally got round to reading chap 2 and 3. i think including the bit with the teradactyl was cool as that was funny in the show, but the part about Bulm's balls being gone would be better  goku an his crotch grabbing was always funny. that's the only criticism really. its hard to choose what to fit in a movie, there was so much funny stuff in the early episodes.

i really like this whole idea with the rice cooker, and the descriptions of king piccolo. i've never seen the episodes with him in it so it's a good introduction for him. i like how in character tien was too.

looking forward to reading the rest

Well, I gotta keep a PG-13-ish rating here. The part about Bulma not having balls would be a little... touchy. Either way, I'm glad you enjoyed it. ^_^

Thanks. ^_^ I did quite a bit of changing up with the whole rice cooker stuff, so it's not really similar to what was in the original series. In fact, he was never even shown coming out of the thing. I just figured it would make a rather nice introduction for him. Also, I wanted to work Tenshinhan into this somehow since he'd make a nice sort of antihero. Also, if I ever get to a sequel, expect him to play a more central role.

Either way, I should get around to updating this later today. Maybe even write a new chapter...? That'd be great.
