I created this thread to discuss the magic and wonder of the night. You see I'm a night owl. I was born a night owl, I will die a night owl, and I am very proud to be a night owl! Here on this thread, I'd like to share some facts about the nighttime, myths about the moon, poems about darkness, and anything in general about the night. So come on in and lets talk about the mystical, magical night. The moon's almost full and I'm ready to get started! |

For starters, has anyone ever heard of the "tree months" of the Celtic moon calendar? Each full moon is given a name, usually named after a type of tree, but some are named for other plants, such as the vine and reed. Currently it is June, meaning we are now in the month of the Oak Moon. According to the ancient Celtic moon calendar, the Oak Moon lasts from June 10th-July 7th. The Summer Solstice occurs during the Oak Moon, and old folklore decrees, "He who sleeps on the shortest night shall sleep all year." Meaning that it is a good time to stay up late and enjoy the warm, moonlit summer nights. The full moon in June is also known to the ancient pagans as the Strong Sun Moon. Probably due to the fact that as the sunlight is the strongest this time of year so too is the reflected moonlight. |

I'm prefer nights because it's not to bright like the sun. We know the moon's light came from sun but it glows well. In science, moon was called dark object because it cannot reflect light. |

I think I was just born to be a night person. Plus I love to star gaze and watch metor showers. I also love to study constellations, but I don't know that much about planets. Some people call the hours between 3:00 am and 5:00 am "psychic quiet time", because this is when the mental energies of people are still as they are in deep sleep by then. I like this time the most, because it sure beats the hectic energies of the day. I can really feel the difference once the people in my neighborhood have been asleep for awhile. I love how quiet and still it is. Now, I think I shall post one of my poems about the night. If anyone would like to comment on it, go right ahead. The Silent Crescent The silent crescent Sits adrift still winds, Contemplating her life. The night is silent. It is a good time to think. So many things are beyond The reach of consciousness. How deep must I sink To find the answers I seek? The silent crescent knows. As I watch you turn to black I realize That I have only to look inside To find The answers To the night's whispers. I was born to live in black But it never hurts to ask The silent crescent. |

Thank you, Dragonsfire. I'd actually like to write my own poetry books and try to sell them some day. I'll look around and see if I can find a few other poems to post.

Today on the topic of nighttime, I found one of my books I've bought on dreams. It says that the Chinese believed that to dream of dragons was a symbol of strength and would bring good luck. Another section on dragons says that if you are attacked by one in a dream, interestingly enough, it somehow means you will have lots of energy in the future and your friends will help you with whatever problems you might have. My book also says that the Romans have a goddess of the moon named Luna. And here's something else I find interesting. My book says that the word "nightmare" comes from Gaelic mythology. Apparently the night "mare" is a horse goddess named Rhiannon who is connected with dreams and the moon. Rhiannon was really a nightmarish creature all right, because according to her myth, she ate her own son! Gross. And here's another poem. Soul of Draco Seven sisters of the Pleiades, Seven sisters in the sky. They dance for their master As Draco flys high. The dragon flys among us, The dragon makes us strong. Seven sisters to grant our wish, Draco can do no wrong. |

Night Life Here I face the night while other people sleep, Silent gazing of evening skies That hold mysteries so deep. I gaze until the stars collide With morning rays of sun, Then I shall rest until another night has begun. I praise this night beneath the stars Brought for me and you. How my heart sings in your arms And all of my dreams come true. Timeless Light I came singing into starlight When the sun had not risen yet. In my net I captured a sky of white stars. I feel the caress Of the heavens that are fearless, I am brave enough to walk the night. Come walk the night with me, Through ageless shadow and timeless starlight, For I am the moon and I am eternity. |

Okay friends, since we are now in the month of July, as of July 8th we are now in the Celtic tree month of the Holly Moon. The Holly Moon lasts from July 8th through August 5th. The Holly Moon brings about the shortening of days as nights now begin to grow longer. I know this for a fact because I always go to bed a half hour before the sun rises. On July 1st the sun rises around 4:30 am. By August 1st the sun rises around 5:13 am. So next month I can start staying up later. An ancient Celtic fire festival honoring the sun called Lamas ocurrs on August 1st during the time of the Holly Moon. This festival is also a harvest feast celebration, and a good way for you to partake in this is to simply have a picnic with your friends at a local park on August 1st. Traditionally, the first grains harvested are baked into a loaf of bread that represents the spirit of the crops, or "John Barleycorn" as it was called in England. This bread was then shared with the community to ensure wealth and success of the people in the town during the Lammas feast on August 1st. So be sure to share some bread with your friends at the Lammas picnic. Yum, sandwiches! ![]() Another name for the full moon in July is the Blessing Moon. The Blessing or Holly Moon, whichever you choose to call it, brings about a time when you give thanks for all the good things you have in life. It's the chance to reflect on all the good times and fun you've had in the summer before fall and winter come. |

There's some pretty amazing stuff out there that can beat the moon hands down. One of my favourite things to see are colliding galaxies. Examples: ![]() ![]() ![]()

Whoa... Now those are some incredible photos, AntiMew! Personally, I have to agree with Bluemoon though. To me the moon is the most beautiful thing in the sky, but still, those pics of yours are amazing! Hey Bluemoon, did you know that blue moons occur usually once every two and a half years? People say "once in a blue moon" like it's such a long span of time, but in truth it's only every two and a half years. Pretty cool, huh? |

I hate the day, because the sun too bright and could burn things like trees. The moon is beautiful and not really bright. Infact, my though are the sun resemble power and the moon resemble speed. |

I've just got to make a post about this right now because I am having such a wonderful night! I brought my DSi outside with me (I use the internet browser on that when my computer's down) and the moon is rising infront of me right now. It's half empty and I'm sitting on the swing on my front porch, just typing away and looking at the moon. It is so beautiful... Being bathed in the light of the waning moon with a nice cool breeze blowing... I need to look up more moon stuff to post here. |
