Some of the characters have in their signatures quotes from somewhere. Some of them have a main theme song, instrumental or with lyrics too. And each character might have, at a certain moment, another song reflecting better a certain mood/ state of spirit... so this is why I said "temporary" here. Besides, each character might find, at a certain moment, an appropriate song to dedicate to a lover, friend or enemy from a thread... Here is the place for all these songs, which might belong to any time and musical genre! I'll start with the two theme songs our board has... DEATH BEFORE THE MAST –by ALESTORM "First light reflects off the ocean All crew now set into motion Another day like many before it Hard life, no way to ignore it Behold! A cry from the crow's nest A ship appears from the south west The years below deck that bored me All lead to what lies before me Hear the terror - Fires burn and cannons sound Fate awaits me - As the vessels circle round See the slaughter - Cutlass swings and pistols fire Feel the anger - Raging through my body tires One last battle - In this sailor's lonely war Come to meet this - Destiny I can't ignore I hold my breath - Close my eyes and hang on for Death before the mast Too late to lay low or outrun Up close we're outmanned and outgunned Prepare to rush forth, unleash hell Cross swords in one final farewell Hulls crash, our vessel is boarded No mercy or tact is afforded But now the King's men draw closer Seems like it may all be over Hear the terror - Fires burn and cannons sound Fate awaits me - As the vessels circle round See the slaughter - Cutlass swings and pistols fire Feel the anger - Raging through my body tires One last battle - In this sailor's lonely war Come to meet this - Destiny I can't ignore I hold my breath - Close my eyes and hang on for Death before the mast." (listen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yKFQap_N9g ) TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST - by ASTRONAUTALIS Chorus: Two years spent before the mast And no one knows the secrets that we're hiding If word got loose, you'd face the lash And thirteen loops would hold me fast and silent Things are not always as they seem to be outside us Devil got poor Persephone But they can't take They can't take you from me I. Mr. Jones done made a mistake, it's all business Worse thing than the watery grave with poor rictus I found about a barrel of grain in the hold, listless So hollow, half out of dismay, frayed princess I guess I've gone soft on my age, they call it instinct The rebels get the devil to pay her, the cat hissing Gonna start, I know I oughta send her to the brig But strongest, not scared, still water and calm winds And all things aren't what they seem to be and Small walls separating Earth from Eden One rib did give Eve a meaning And one snip might could keep her secret With the short hair there and a change of clothing Fit right in and work soak and oakum Four fortnights shut alone with the opium I might slip by, but for her and bossun. II. Snip of the shears, a fist of her hair, I'll take to the air - handsomely. Until it floated down among the clouds reflected on the glassy sea. And when the winds disappeared, crew stripped almost bare, bathed in the transfixed deep. And all things aren't what they seem to be, as she floated next to me - just out of reach. III. There is no knot so steadfast it won't go broke, in the middle of monsoons you hope don't choke. Waiting watching her wet lips and clothes soak through Blinded mind of the red sky and oxide clouds living just as a fezz mittens the lines and Booms coupled up with abstainments of stolen looks, broke a pledge against the baulkhead world pitch pool, 'til you shake the soft hands in the soapstone pool. IV. Mr. Jones is the poor soul who walked into a tempest endless time to pull through. Victim of whipping and headsail thoughts footloose, The best men can end when the storm blows through. So we paid our keep for the sin of a reckless dream In the seam where secrets sleep Between me, her, the Devil and the deep blue sea. ( listen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4BiKHL-SBk ) |

I start with translating "La Cruz de Santiago", Chago's theme song: He wasn’t the most honest man, but he Was a brave and loyal man. Nonetheless, mercy didn’t take shelter inside him. He lived poorly, hiring for three coins His sword and dagger, In less bright business with worse purposes. There were hard times and one had to seek his bread. The sword, the roguery and threat were ruling then. The steel sparkles in his hand the sweat pearls on his face - He will go where the sea has no ruler! He will go seeking… Against his back, a shadow Was following his footsteps Without missing any detail, Seeming to learn. His gaze reflected calm and peace, His deep and familiar voice Told ancient legends. Something mysterious envelopped him They say he was feeding on the folk stories about him. The Cross of Santiago brights on his chest, In the sun rays. He never uncovered his face, He hid his name. In the weaving of the Time, In the knotting of dreams A voice is choking: “Don’t believe everything you see, Take into account only your intuition, And if you foster any doubt You’ll never find consolation inside you! Launch well your given facts Because the road game has started! Sharpen your skills, help yourself with magic, use the tarot Read in the soul of the forest And guess where death did hide! The steel sparkles in his hand the sweat pearls on his face - He will go where the sea has no ruler! The Cross of Santiago brights on his chest, In the sun rays. He never uncovered his face! And one from Chago to Kaelyn Andy Griggs -She's More I like blue eyes, hers are green Not like the woman of my dreams And her hair’s not quite as long as I had planned Five foot three isn’t tall She’s not the girl I pictured at all In those paint by number fantasies I’ve had (Chorus) So it took me by complete surprise When my heart got lost in those deep green eyes She’s not at all what I was looking for She’s more No, it wasn’t at first site But the moment I looked twice I saw the woman I was born to love Her laughter fills my soul And when I hold her I don’t wanna let go When it comes to her I can’t get enough More than I dreamed of More than any man deserves I couldn’t ask for more Than a love like hers |

Marina's theme song (Thalassa by Michalis Hatziyannis) can be translated as follows: My sea, take me in your arms I can handle your saltiness even though I’m wounded. My sea, be my road and my destiny and tell me what do the words and silences mean. If anyone asks for me tell him, I don’t exist, that we becáme one. I got lost inside you with the little life which is left to me, I will drown in the open sea. If anyone asks for me sea, save me, make up something to tell them. Hide me here in your waves from lies and people who give me sorrow. For all the crew of HMS "Rose": When the Ship Comes In - Bob Dylan Oh the time will come up when the winds will stop And the breeze will cease to be a-breathin Like the stillness in the wind before the hurricane begins, The hour that the ship comes in And the sea will split and the ships will hit And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking And the tide will sound and the waves will pound And the morning will be breaking Oh the fishes will laugh as they swim out of the path And the seagulls will be a-smilin' And the rocks on the sand will proudly stand The hour that the ship comes in And the words that are used for to get the ship confused Will not be understood as they're spoken Oh the chains of the sea will have busted in the night And be buried on the bottom of the ocean A song will lift as the main sail shifts And the boat drifts unto the shoreline And the sun will respect every face on the deck The hour that the ship comes in And the sands will roll out a carpet of gold For your wearied toes to be a-touchin' And the ship's wise men will remind you once again That the whole wide world is watchin' And the foes will rise with the sleep still in their eyes And eject from their beds and think they're dreamin' But they'll pinch themselves and squeal And they'll know that it's for real, The hour that the ship comes in And they'll raise their hands Sayin' we'll meet all you demands But we'll shout from the bow Your days are numbered And like Pharoah's tribe they'll be drownded in the tide And like Goliath they'll be conquered (((listen to the song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrk25hHEb4A )) |

Raoul's theme song is a song of the French corsairs, which had circulated in many versions for many years, each talking about another corsair and ships of another dimension (the number of cannons, e.g., varies up to double from a song to another). Lastly it was attributed to the taking of "Kent" by Robert Surcouf in 1800, but then it was Napoleon's time, and the toast "To the health of the King of France" lasts definitely for fifty years earlier at least. And as much as Raoul "loves" the Brits, it suits him perfectly! On the thirty-first of August "On the thirty-first of August We saw approaching under sail An English frigate Cutting through the sea and the waves In order to attack Bordeaux. Chorus: Let's drink a cup, la la, let's drink in two draughts, To the health of true lovers; To the health of the King of France, And damned be the King of England, Who has declared war on us! The commander of the ship Summoned his lieutenant: "Lieutenant, do you feel able, Do you feel strong enough To board and take the Englishman?" The proud and hardy lieutenant Replied, "Yes, Captain; Call all hands to their stations: I shall hoist our colours, Which will stay aloft, we swear it." The master blew his whistle To call all hands on deck: All was made ready for the boarding, Hardy topmen, proud sailors, Brave gunners, wee cabin boys. Turning our back to the wind as we came up. I boarded her at her forepart; With hatchet and grenade, With pike, sabre and musketoon, Quick as a flash I had her all in order. What will they say of the great big tub, In Brest, in London, and in Bordeaux, That let its crew be taken By a ship with eleven cannons, When it had sixty good ones! " |

I'll start by translating the lyrics of Sol's theme song - "La cancion del pirata", for everybody to understand (the link to the song is appended to the signature) The Song of the Pirate (translation into English by James Kennedy, so that it rhymes! As you can see in the signature, mine is a little different) The breeze fair aft, all sails on high, Ten guns on each side mounted seen, She does not cut the sea, but fly, A swiftly sailing brigantine; A pirate bark, the “Dreaded” named, For her surpassing boldness famed, On every sea well-known and shore, From side to side their boundaries o'er. The moon in streaks the waves illumes Hoarse groans the wind the rigging through; In gentle motion raised assumes The sea a silvery shade with blue; Whilst singing gaily on the poop The pirate Captain, in a group, Sees Europe here, there Asia lies, And Stamboul in the front arise. “Sail on, my swift one! nothing fear; Nor calm, nor storm, nor foeman's force, Shall make thee yield in thy career Or turn thee from thy course. Despite the English cruisers fleet We have full twenty prizes made; And see their flags beneath my feet A hundred nations laid. My treasure is my gallant bark, My only God is liberty; My law is might, the wind my mark, My country is the sea. There blindly kings fierce wars maintain, For palms of land, when here I hold As mine, whose power no laws restrain, Whate'er the seas infold. Nor is there shore around whate'er, Or banner proud, but of my might Is taught the valorous proofs to bear, And made to feel my right. My treasure is my gallant bark, My only God is liberty; My law is might, the wind my mark, My country is the sea. Look when a ship our signals ring, Full sail to fly how quick she's veered! For of the sea I am the king, My fury's to be feared; But equally with all I share Whate'er the wealth we take supplies; I only seek the matchless fair, My portion of the prize. My treasure is my gallant bark, My only God is liberty; My law is might, the wind my mark, My country is the sea. I am condemned to die !—I laugh; For, if my fates are kindly sped, My doomer from his own ship's staff Perhaps I'll hang instead. And if I fall, why what is life? For lost I gave it then as due, When from slavery's yoke in strife A rover! I withdrew. My treasure is my gallant bark, My only God is liberty; My law is might, the wind my mark, My country is the sea. My music is the Northwind's roar; The bellowings of the Black Sea's shore, And rolling of my guns. And as the thunders loudly sound, And furious the tempests rave, I calmly rest in sleep profound, So rocked upon the wave. My treasure is my gallant bark, My only God is liberty; My law is might, the wind my mark, My country is the sea. |

Andrea's theme song is Dark Sanctuary - La Chute De l’Ange (The Angel’s Fall). It's translation into English says: A light twinkles in the night And the angel falls from the heavens His wings torn by his God Another drop among the rains His shell has crossed the clouds To land on earth, shivering, Of an angel only remains his face, The purity of his white complexion The poor man shall be sad But from Heaven came hatred On his pale face only remain Ignored miseries and sufferings " I wish I could sleep one last time, To forget my pain and Marie, I already feel boredom in Death, And I have lost faith in other worlds..." |

From Chago to Celia - From Chago to Celia SCORPIONS – "PARTNERS IN CRIME" Even though we ain't no brothers We follow the spiritual light It's thicker than blood And harder than stone We overcome stormy waters Climb up the mountain so high The day will come When we bring it home We're on some kind of a mission For what we believe in our hearts We're reaching out for our visions 'Cause we are partners in crime Any time Partners in crime On the crimson sky We ride the thunder, the lightning To find the key to our faith We keep searching for The peace of mind (yeah) He walked the road of a warrior Stand up and do what it takes 'Cause these things life Ain't worth a dime Out in a world of confusion Searching for light in the dark We turn the wheel of illusion 'Cause we are partners in crime Any time Partners in crime On the crimson sky We hold on to what money can't buy 'Cause friends will be friends Till the day that we die We go on until the end of time Once you're in You just can't get away |

From Andrea to Chiara- several dedications: 1) after their parting on the docks (and he having missed the ship) - I think Celine Dion's "On se parle d'amour ou d'amitie" is the most appropriate dedication. It says: He thinks of me, I see it I feel it I know it And his smile doesn't lie when he comes to pick me up He likes to talk to me about the things he saw About the progress he made and of all his projects I believe however that he's alone and that he hangs out with other girls I don't know what they want nor the sentences he says I don't know where I am somewhere in his life If I count more than the others for him today He is so close to me yet I don't know how to love him Only him can decide if we talk about love or about friendship I love him and I want to offer him my life Even if he doesn't want my life I dream of his arms but I don't know how to love him He seems to hesitate between a love story or a friendship story And I'm like an island in the middle of the ocean It seems my heart is too big Nothing to tell him he knows well that I have all to give Only to smile waiting for him wanting to have him But they're sad those nights and the time seems long And I hadn't learn to live without him He is so close to me yet I don't know how to love him Only him can decide if we talk about love or about friendship I love him and I want to offer him my life Even if he doesn't want my life I dream of his arms but I don't know how to love him He seems to hesitate between a love story or a friendship story And I'm like an island in the middle of the ocean It seems my heart is too big! and 2) as he starts being torn between two girls, even if it takes some time for him to realise it - the memory of Kayla and his dreams about Chiara - this might be reflected somehow by Letoya Luckett's "Torn" : A part of me wants to leave you alone. A part of me wants for you to come home. A part of me says I'm living a lie. (And I'm better off without you.) A part of me says to think it through. A part of me says I'm over you. A part of me wants to say goodbye. A part of me is asking why... A part of me wants to leave. But a part of me wants to be here with you. And everytime I think we're over and done you do something to get me back loving you. And you got me just torn. Torn in between the two. (Oh yeah) Cuz I really wanna be with you. But something's telling me I should leave you alone. (I really want to be with you) Leave you alone. And you got me just torn in between the two. There were no issues when we started out. It was cool. It was everything that love's about. But something happened. Plus I feel it's over now. (Cuz I can't understand you now.) A part of me says it's all my fault. A part of me says "he ain't what you want." A part of me says to get my bags. A part of me says I can't do that. A part of me wants to leave. But a part of me wants to be here with you. And everytime I think that it's over and done you make me fall back in love. You got me just torn. So many times I... (I was ready to go) So many times I... (Had my foot out the door) So many times I... (I thought to give him a chance, thought he'd be a better man) Now I'm sitting here and I'm so confused. Cuz I keep fighting myself for you. (I don't know how much more I can take but I can't feel this way) (You got me so torn) Torn in between the two. (Oh yeah) Cuz I really wanna be with you. (I really wanna be with you) But something's telling me I should leave you alone. Leave you alone. Leave you alone. (But I don't know) And you got me just torn in between the two. (Should I stay or should I go) Cuz I really wanna be with you. (I don't know) But something's telling me I should leave you alone. (sorry that I could find only a song speaking for a woman, not for a man... this is why I haven't chosen what I had thought initially, "Torn between two lovers" by Mary McGregor - even if it is beautiful too, and it were suitable if from a man to a woman, but so...) |

"Gentleman soldier" by the DUBLINERS Well I saw the gentleman soldier, as a sentry he did stand He saluted the fair maid by a waving of his hand So boldly then he kissed her and he passed it off as a joke He drilled her up to the sentry box Wrapped up in a soldier's coat Chorus: And the drums they go with a rat-a-ta-tat And the fifes they loudly play Fare thee well, Polly me dear, I must be going away All night they tossed and tumbled till daylight did appear The soldier rose, put on his clothes Said: 'Fare ey well, me dear' For the drums they are a sounding And the fifes they sweetly play And if it weren't for that, my Polly Then along with you I'd stay Chorus, O come, ye gentleman soldier, 'won't you marry me?' 'Oh no, me dearest Polly such things never can be For I have a wife already and children I have three Two wives are allowed in the army But one is too many for me' Chorus, If anyone comes a courting you You can treat them to a glass If anyone comes a courting you You can say you're a country lass You don't have to tell them That ever you played this joke That you were drilled in a sentry box Wrapped up in a soldier's coat Chorus, 'Oh come ye gentleman soldier, why didn't you tell me so My parents will be angry when this they come to know' And when nine long months had come and passed, And purgatory got shame She had a little millitia boy And she didn't know his name Chorus. Well I saw the gentleman soldier, as a sentry he did stand He saluted the fair maid by a waving of his hand So boldly then he kissed her and he passed it off as a joke He drilled her up to the sentry box Wrapped up in a soldier's coat Chorus: And the drums they go with a rat-a-ta-tat And the fifes they loudly play Fare thee well, Polly me dear, I must be going away All night they tossed and tumbled till daylight did appear The soldier rose, put on his clothes Said: 'Fare ey well, me dear' For the drums they are a sounding And the fifes they sweetly play And if it weren't for that, my Polly Then along with you I'd stay Chorus, O come, ye gentleman soldier, 'won't you marry me?' Well, Marina was thinking, in the thread "Between dreams and reality", about how her parents had met and got married... And, being born and raised in Kefallonia, Maria Pasqualigo understood Greek as well as her native Venetian, so Sterio chose to propose to her with this song… and yes, the daughter of an unlucky shipmaster from a Venetian family of Kefallonia agreed to be “stolen away” by the handsome Greek. “Daughter of a ship-master, and beautiful girl Body like cypress, you bend like an osier. Osier, osier, I have you in my heart Osier, osier, one evening I’m going to steal you away! You have me hurt with an arrow, the wound is not visible And there can’t be any doctor to cure it besides you. Osier, osier, I have you in my heart Osier, osier, one evening I’m going to steal you away! Ask the little moon, and the stars to tell you My eyes how do they cry when they remember you… Osier, osier, I have you in my heart Osier, osier, one evening I’m going to steal you away!” The song would be a good match for their daughter Marina too, given that she was the daughter of "Colomba's" shipmaster... Now let's see who's going to steal HER away... from the Navy...

A dedication for Sharky from the privateer acting captain, Mr. Black: Keelhauled by Alestorm My friends I stand before you To tell a truth most dire They lurks a treator in our mist Who haven't voted the captain's ire. He don't deserve no mercy We ought to shoot him with a gun But I am not an evil man so first let's have a little fun: We'll tie that scoundrel to a rope And throw him overboard drag him underneath the ship A terrifying deadly trip. Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below Make that bastard walk the plank with a bottle of rum and the Yo-Ho-Ho. I will not say what he has done His sins are far to grave to tell It's not my place to judge a man But for them he will burn in hell The sharks will dine up on his flesh And Davy Jones will have his soul Take his money and his hat – He won't need them where he's gonna go Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below Make that bastard walk the plank with a bottle of rum and the Yo-Ho-Ho. |

A dedication for the whole crew of the "Fate's Hand": William Elliott Whitmore – Mutiny Well it's a God damn shame what's goin' down How we got to this I do not know There's a sick sick wind that's blowin' 'round And the captain's got to go About you or me he does not give a damn What a low down dirty snake With his mind on his money and his money on his mind Well something's got to break Like when the hounds start howlin' (When the hounds start howlin') When there's fiends abound (When there's fiends abound) I will stand up and shout: I declare mutiny on this ship Well the captain's been drinkin' below the deck And this vessel's headed way off course I want to wrap my hands around his crooked neck And throw him overboard Send him to his Lord Send him to his Lord No I don't want to be saved No I just want to be free And take back what these old devils have taken from me I don't want to be saved Oh I just want to be free And take back what these old devils have taken from me Like when the hounds start howlin' (When the hounds start howlin') When there's fiends abound (When there's fiends abound) I will stand up and shout: I declare mutiny on this ship I said I declare mutiny on this ship Well the captain's been drinkin' below the deck And this vessel's headed way off course I want to wrap my hands around his crooked neck And throw him overboard Send him to his Lord Send him to his Lord I want to send him back to where he came Not to mercy no, but to burnin' flame I said he don't need no water (He don't need no water) Well let the motherfucker burn (Let the motherfucker burn) I said he don't need to water (He don't need no water) Well let the motherfucker burn (Let the motherfucker burn) Well burn motherfucker burn Well burn motherfucker burn Parkway Drive – Mutiny The deepest circle of hell is reserved for betrayers and mutineers. Fuck the memories. We're dead at every turn. So spin your fucking shit and we'll die with every twist of tongue. Your hollow gaze has shifted past my eyes. Another dead face fades away. Now what's left to take? Another day I regret your memory. In my mind you will never be more that this. So what's left to fucking take? Now my trust is gone. As your world comes crashing down I'm going to watch it fucking burn. Everything we had lies in pieces. Everything we had fucking dies... tonight. Through those deceiving eyes I've seen the blackest heart. The blackest heart. Everything you love fucking dies tonight. |

The most suitable dedication from Chago to Kate: Como un gorrion by Juan Manuel Serrat. He has already compared her with a frightened little bird… ”She is short (little) like a wind blow And her hair is brown, She has got a look between tender and sad Like a sparrow. She likes wandering through the branches, From a balcony to another Without anybody touching her, Like a sparrow. She was born free like the wind, Nobody owns her and she moves by instinct Like a sparrow. Wandering little bird Drinking water from the ponds Who has never eaten from my hand Like a sparrow. She doesn’t sell her warmth, neither her song For canary seeds, But she is looking here around for her lettuce Like a sparrow. She feels pity for the canary But she doesn’t envy the falcon, She likes flying low Like a sparrow. And chatting with the clouds And sleeping in a corner Where no cats arrive to catch her, Like a sparrow.” |

Plot dedication - for St. John's festival: "Fiesta" by Juan Manuel Serrat. A contemporary view on the same holiday.... I don't like so much this translation into English, but it was done to rhyme, so it glossed over a few aspects... Glory be to God perfected, All the garbage got collected. My street, once dark and neglected, Now is all lit up and glowing. And they strung across the street A banner painted on a sheet, And paper flags, red as a beet, Green and yellow, freely blowing. And now as the sun is setting, Skirts are fluttering and fretting Underneath a flowered netting, So that from above it covers How on this midsummer night People of every stripe Share their bread to the last bite, And their spouses and their lovers. Hurry up, I’ll be there waiting if you want to come, For night is falling and our miseries are slowly going numb. Let’s climb the hill to the party, For up on my street the fiesta’s starting. Now they’re dancing, slob and dandy, And the peasant and the grandee. As each takes the other’s hand, he Pays no mind to his position. Then the sun will find them camped In the shade of a street lamp, Full of liquor, hot and damp, Touching girls without permission. And, hung over to their bladders, Go the poor back to their tatters, Go the rich back to their scatters, And the preacher to his ravings. Now good and evil are awake, The poor fox goes to the gate, The rich fox goes to his stake, And the miser to his savings. It’s the end, the sun is telling us it’s good and done. For just one night we could forget that everyone is only one. Then down the hill we’ll have wended, For up on my street the fiesta’s ended. |
