Being a doctor was a rewarding job. However there were hard times where a lot of work had to be done, times like after a battle or like now, after a storm. However what made this storm different wasn't the fact that the Rising Sun had managed to get through it with most of the crew alive but the fact that Sara basically had to treat patients of two ships. Well, one and a half considering that the privateers had an apprentice doctor. But Sara was an efficient doctor and had her own sickbay under perfect control and most of her work was tidying up and preparing for the next huge disaster.

Today though, Sara needed a break from it all. She needed fresh air and to do something else for just a few hours at least and what better than a chance to get on dry land and see this interesting little island? She moved up on deck and walked over to the side of the ship to find a good spot to walk, like a trail or something. Of course with that came another thought, even if Sara wasn't planning on a long walk, she definitely wasn't to happy about walking alone. The sun was shining and that was what made this possible. She would be scared out of her mind to walk into a dark forest at night, especially with another ship nearby full of people she didn't knew let alone trust.

Of course she could go ask Sol to send an armed escort with her, as he surely had enough to do at the moment. But there were plenty of people around who had nothing to do really as their tasks onboard only had to do with sailing normally or that their tasks had been completed. Sara walked a few stepped and then came across a person she knew had no tasks at the moment. “Hey Gaspard” She said in her fluent French as approached him with a friendly smile. “I was wondering if you might want to take a walk with me on the island?” She continued and then couldn't help but poke a little to the guy as she said: “Unless of course you still hold a grudge against me for beating you in a swordfight” Yes she knew that she had only stood a chance against him because she had attacked him from behind as he was engaged in another swordfight with Angel, but a little playful teasing didn't hurt. “Actually if I have to be perfectly honest I find myself wanted to explore the island a bit but I am afraid to walk on my own” She admitted to make sure he didn't think she had offered to walk with him merely to tease him.

Gaspard was delighted, as always, to see the ship's lady doctor. She was not only very competent but she was very easy on the eyes. Also important, she was very friendly and he looked forward to his conversations with her.

"Madamoiselle, I would be honored to accompany you on your walk," he gave a slight bow of his head.

"As for besting me with the sword, I believe your memory is clouded as to the true situation that day, which played entirely to your advantage," he pretended to take offense for just a moment then grinned.

"But I forgive you. No, I could never hold a grudge against you," he assured the woman.

As they then started off he pointed out, "I am a good choice then to accompany you for I have already explored the island a little. Least I know where the freshwater is. The privateers may be about but so far the treaty seems to be holding...without too much trouble."

Sara smiled when Gaspard agreed to walk with her. He was the total opposite of the classic pirate in tales. He was well mannered and could probably fool the French court if he dressed up as a nobleman. As he gave a little bow, Sara responded with a little curtsey. It was not something she did often as a pirate and it might have been more of a jesting thing than her being strictly following the proceduces of man and woman interaction.

When Gaspard grinned and spoke of his thoughts on the time where they had been enemies and fighting, Sara let out a mild laugh. “I certainly think it is a good thing that our blades never crossed” She said honestly and added: “As a doctor I prefer saving lives than taking them”

Gaspard then said that he was a good choice to accompany her as he knew where the lake was and Sara nodded. “I was hoping to go somewhere less populated...” She said quietly. “Even though sickbay is my own little domain, there are always people around and I need some time in less crowded places” she continued.

When speaking of the treaty with the privateers, Sara nodded but it didn't really change anything. “Well it may sound silly coming from a woman armed with a rapier and a pistol... But I am not very fond of going anywhere alone” She explained and then decided to elaborate. “My pistol skills are non-existing and the only reason why I can win a sword fight is because people underestimate me as a woman” Sara sighed. “But I have to say walking on a deserted island bring more than just the worry of raping bandits... there must be wild animals on that island... I am certain of that...” Sara turned her head to look at Gaspard and then with a wink she concluded: “So you should enjoy this chance to be the big strong man protecting a lady... I can say it won't come around often”

"Well, had our blades actually crossed, I would have made certain I only wounded you for I would never forgive himself if I were to kill someone as beautiful and intelligent as yourself," Gaspard smiled, giving it to the woman right back in some good natured jibes.

As they continued walking she spoke frankly, he liked that about the woman, she was easy to get along with and a joy to converse with.

" I greatly admire you, Sarah, to be able to do what you do on a ship of rough and tough men. Being a physician can never be an easy thing and then given the conditions on a ship and such, you are to be complimented for your skill and devotion to duty," he wanted her to know, so he spoke frankly also.

She winked at him and declared this was his chance to be 'the big strong man protecting a lady.'

Gaspard laughed, "Well, I hardly fit the big strong part but don't you worry, I can protect you with this." He patted the hilt of his fine sword.

“How very chivalrous of you” Sara responded with a mild laugh as Gaspard told her that he wouldn't have killed her in a fight but rather just wounded her. And when he continued to end his words with a compliment, Sara was once again taken aback at how unlike the typical image of a pirate this young man was. “Thank you” she said as they started walking. Gaspard told her that he admired her for being able to work under these conditions and Sara nodded thankfully. It was always nice to be praised but when he mentioned the rough and tough men, Sara quickly said: “Well most of those men turn into peeping mice when they come to me because most of them know that I can be a dragon if need be” Sara smiled a bit and then looked at Gaspard. “You know... I am certain that the Rising Sun has benefitted greatly from gaining you as a crewmember” she said. “If for no other reason then at least that you show that pirates are not mere barbarians”

Gaspard said that he wasn't a big strong man but then padded his sword saying that he could protect her with that. “I'll take what I can get” Sara replied with a smile as she knew that his swordskills were quite good in terms of protection. As they walked, Sara started thinking about Gaspard and his role on the ship and how well he had settled into the crew and then she remembered that he had found a certain like for Yazmin. Well it had seemed that way at least. “So... Forgive my curiosity... But have you managed to win Yazmin's heart yet, or have the storm kept you parted from her?” Of course Sara knew very well that not all sailors who slept with Mini had any thoughts of relationship with her but merely a lust to settle. But Gaspard didn't seem like the type who did things lightly. “She certainly could use someone as kind as you are” Sara continued as she always thought somehow of the wellbeing of all the crew.

Gaspard nodded at her compliment about how the ship benefitted from him being a part of the crew but then gave a shrug.

"I am not so certain of that. I think - in the long run - I will make a very poor pirate. I have no desire to attack innocent seafarers and steal their belongings and then kill them when they defend themselves."

It was hardly honorable and it bothered him. The privateer captain had made good points in their discussion.

They walked on further when Sarah brought up the other woman of the crew, Yazmin, quite different in almost every way from each other, well except they both were beautiful. He had to laugh a little at her question though.

"Win her heart? I do not think so. If anything she might be just as content to cut out my heart with her knife, that one. We may have...well......you know ...but she ignored every attempt of mine at a simple conversation and then when we were finished, she kicked me out and that was it."

"We have not spoken since," he added in truth.

It seemed that Gaspard was walking with a heavy heart. Not from love quarrels or personal loss, but simply because his new job so to speak was bothering him. The morals of being a pirate and it actually made sense to Sara. She could understand why Gaspard wasn't to happy about having to kill innocent sailors or stealing from someone. And of course when said like that it did seem dishonourable. Sara nodded understandingly.

”That is not an uncommon thought...” She said and looked at him. ”I think most people wish to leave a better world for their children than the only they got from their parents and sometimes that seems like quite an impossible task” Sara walked a few steps before stopping completely and then looking out over the island. ”Obviously as a doctor I prefer saving lives than actually taking them” she said but then also admitted: ”But unfortunately I can not go home to where I come from... I wish not to do it either...”

Then she turned to look at Gaspard again but waited a moment before speaking again. ”I am certain that you have every possible chance to go back to your old life and life a life as an honourable man if that is what you desire” Sara voice was neutral and not at all sounding like she was thinking his thoughts were bad or that he was a traitor. ”And if you want my honest oppinion... then you should do what you truely think is best, Gaspard” She added and smiled kindly. Her job as a doctor also often meant talking to people if they needed it. ”And if your future isn't on board the Rising Sun then I am sure that no one will think of you as a coward for seeking out your dreams”

As they started walking again, Gaspard explained the encounter with Mini from his perspective. Sara smiled as he spoke of it. Not just because he so shyly spoke of the subject, but because knowing Mini would make it quite clear that he was telling the truth. Mini was not the social type. But Sara could not blame him for being a bit shy when it came to talking about sexual matters, Sara herself had never been with a man and likely would have found it hard to talk about herself if she had to speak with someone else about her own expirience or the lack there of. ”Well... I am sure she kicked you out because she doesn't like you” Sara answered as the finally reached the beach. ”But you must understand... Yazmin had a hard life before joining the Rising Sun and unfortunately that has left her less... Social”

Gaspard nodded at her revelation about her past and not being able to go back, "I cannot go back to France either. I will make my life out here in the New World from here on in."

"Our captain is indeed a decent sort, I do have respect for him but I highly doubt he would...or even could allow crew to leave the ship whenever they please. What would that do to a ship's discipline?" he pointed out.

"Besides even if I do leave...and I am considering it, I will not do so in these circumstances, when we are all in trouble here. I will do my part as a good crewman to see we get clear of here safely," he declared.

She seemed to agree with him about Yazmin.

"Yes, I not only think she doesn't like me, I doubt she likes any man," Gaspard sighed, "But that is her choice and I will respect it. In truth we both had reasons other than romance or love or a long future for being in that bed together. It was a bit more base than that. For me...it was my first time and for her, well, I believe she just simply enjoys it for the sensations, nothing more."

Sara nodded as Gaspard explained that he couldn't return to France. ”The Caribbean is not a bad place to be stuck either” She said with a smile. There were far worse places on earth where one could end up. She listened as the young man explained how he didn't believe that Sol would let anyone leave when they pleased. Sara looked at him for a moment. ”This is not a navy ship, Gaspard” She said quietly. ”Those who sail with us are people who are seeking adventure, people seeking fortune or in the case of you and me and many others, people who are not welcome at home anymore... No bond binds us to the ship any longer than our desire go... And you are free to leave whenever you wish” She said and then added: ”But yeah you're right about not doing it right now where we're all stranded”

Of course it was a big loss for the ship if Gaspard decided to leave but on the other hand, if he didn't feel that this was a life for him, then it would be terrible for him to stay as well. ”Well you should do what feels right, Gaspard” Sara said to him as an advice. ”Because you do have a chance to get out now while not many know you as a pirate” Then they started talking about Mini and it seemed that Gaspard knew very well that there hadn't been any feelings involved in it all.”You're probably right” Sara said, not wanting to pry into it anymore and of course not knowing that the whole deal was about to get a lot more complicated once Mini began to show the first signs of pregnancy.

"Yes, there is much to reccommend the Caribbean. The sun and warmth though I could do without these hurricanes," Gaspard smiled.

She also assured him that if he wanted to leave the pirate life, he would be permitted but did like his declaration he would not do it til they were safe from all their current problems. Gaspard nodded, he wanted to believe her and certainly did not think her to be a liar but wasn't positive all the pirates would be so understanding. Still, he would definitely consider a new career other than pirate once they docked at another port.

She had another excellent point too, the sooner he got out the less people would even know he was a pirate. So far he had not had to compromise his moral code by robbing anyone or killing some innocent crewman of a merchant. He didn't mind a fight in truth but he wanted it to be for a proper cause at least.

The subject turned to Mini and in the end she seemed to agree with his view.

"Yes, I know I'm right. She has no feelings for me. And that is fine, I have no desire to be married yet. I will wait until when I settle down...oh, and even more important, when I find the right person. She is not the right person," he declared.

Sara smiled when Gaspard mentioned that the Caribbean certainly was a good place but that he could do without the hurricanes. Sara nodded in agreement and then added: ”I think I could do without the battle as well... But I suspect that any doctor would feel this way” Sara could see that Gaspard wasn't fully convinced by her words about him being able to leave when he wanted but she also knew that it wasn't always good to pry into things that really wasn't her business. Gaspard's stay on the Rising Sun was his affair and if he wanted to talk about it then he was more than welcome to do so. But She wouldn't push him into it.

She nodded again as Gaspard explain about Mini and she could definately understand his point. Sara couldn't imagine the person who would marry her. Well it would have to be a very controlling man and then he would likely not get a loving wife as much as a personal slave. Life was hard and unfair at times. The had gotten off the ship and was beginning to walk across the sand beach. Sara was looking out at sea when she suddenly dropped a couple of inches. It was as if the ground dissappeared underneath her and she let a surprised yelp before realizing that she wasn't falling anywhere. Sara looked down and wondered what she was standing on. It looked just like the sand had just sunk a bit down. But it felt like she was standing on a wooden door or something. Carefully she brushed some of the sand to the side with her foot and it was indeed wood that was under the sand. ”What on earth is this?” She asked and looked up at Gaspard.

(Sorry, missed this)

Their walk took them along one of the soft sand beaches that ringed the island, the weather was beautiful, it was hard to think that not that long ago the raging hurricane had battered their ship and others forcing them to this very same isle.
Conversation halted for awhile as they just walked, enjoying the sun, the breeze, and just the peace too.

Then Sarah became startled, looking down. Gaspard stopped and his eyes went right to the sand where she had stepped, it was as if it had sunk for some strange reason? The doctor used her foot to move some sand and there was wood underneath!

"Probably old debris slowly covered by the shifting of sands," was his immediate guess but it was worth investigating at least.

Kneeling down he began to use his hands to spread more of the sand and get a better idea of the size of this mysterious wood.

Being stranded on an island with plenty of people needing medical aid definately made many miss their home either in Tortuga or where ever else they came from. While Sara sometimes missed her old home too, she knew that the only home she had was her cabin on the Rising Sun and of course the homeliness that Maribel always managed to make when ashore. But this island wasn't too bad. Sara enjoyed the sun shining on her face and the fresh air. A quiet walk on the beach was lovely and knowing that she had a good swordsman along made her feel quite safe at the same time.

However when the sand sank under her, Sara forgot about the peaceful walk for a moment and even more so when she found herself standing on a wooden plate. She figured that Gaspard was right about it being debris of some kind but as she took a step back to let him investigate, it almost felt as if she was standing on a thin wooden plate with nothing underneath it. Sara stepped completely of the plate and located the edge by brushing away more sand with her foot. Then she tried to lift it up but even before trying she realized that it surely was to large for her to lift at all. So she had to give up. ”We should find someone else to come down here and help us with this... I am curious what might be under this...” She said and looked down at the plate hoping that it wasn't just sand under it.

The lady physician had joined him kneeling in front of whatever this mostly buried hunk of wood was and desperately tried to lift it up. Gaspard watched her a bit surprised at her effort, surely they needed to dig it out more thoroughly, whatever it was. Before he could gently point such a thing out though, she looked at him and suggested they get help.

Gaspard considered that idea then stated, "If that is your wish, you found it afterall.....but what if what's under there is something valuable? I don't know...say gold coin in a trunk...or a pouch of jewels within a crate? If we can do this ourselves, we would then be the ones to decide whether to keep it between the two of us or to split it with our crew."

He was not certain if the pirates had any sort of rules to cover such an occasion. This was not like loot in the hold of a ship they had seized.

"Am I correct in this assumption?"

Obviously the wooden plate didn’t budge when she tried to move it and Sara then considered to get some help from the rest of the crew. She didn’t know what was under the plate and surely it could be something useful or valuable. Of course if also could just be the home of some beach crabs.

When Gaspard then suggested that he thought pirates could keep this to themselves, whatever they happened to find. She looked over at her fellow pirate. “I think your thoughts on pirates are still tainted by years of horrible tales… We may be lawless people of fortune… But we do share with our crewmates whatever we find” She said with a smile. She didn’t want to seem lecturing, just answering his question. “I would assume an aspiring musketeer would appreciate that” She added with a wink thinking what Gaspard might have ended up as had he not joined the pirate ship. He was a good swordsman after all.
