He went there because he didn't know where else to go to find her. He went today because he couldn't wait any longer to do so. The thought of talking to her again - of gesturing, even - of being around her, was difficult to put aside. And he had already waited three days.

It was frustrating for the privateers to have to wait like this for their payment. They saw the girls who came by the docks to sell their very specific wares, they heard the music from taverns and knew there was liquor and hot food out there just asking to be bought. And the men like Adoracion, the men who had nothing except what was coming to them, had to just watch as all the other guys got shore leave to enjoy themselves.

Finally, with still no cash to his name, Addie could not refrain ay longer, and changing into a fresh white shirt - there was little that could be done about his black pants and boots, each heavily worn - Adoracion stepped into town. He had trimmed his beard, borrowed coin for a bath and freshly combed his hair, but he still smelled heavily of the sea - not that he would know - and and was chapped from his days working.

He got lost on his way there and had to turn back.

He stood on the steps to the shop for a moment, thinking of what a poor suitor he was - unable to bring more than himself and his uncouth desires home from a month at sea.

He nearly turned back, but through the glass he thought he caught a flash of brown hair behind the desk... he wasn't sure... and a warmth filled his body. Damning himself for his foolishness, Adoracion turned the knob and stepped into the shop, wondering if the little woman called Nicole would think him crazy for having actually returned.

Nicole’s days had been uneventful. She was serving the customers, preparing potions and salves, and, when Madame Lucia had time, she had started to teach her Spanish. Simply, first with the words around the room, then the usual greetings, the numbers, the days of the week… It wasn’t as if she could really talk after merely few weeks, but it was a start. And a little, steady, daily progress. Something new to put her mind to.

She was aware what her mistress and Ghislaine were thinking, but she didn’t bother to convince them anymore that it wasn’t true. She had been first scolded, then teased, then let be. The days were passing quietly, and she was not the only one praying for a seafarer. Madame Lucia was worrying for Rear-Admiral Duval too.

Now she was writing down the stocks and what needed to be ordered tomorrow. When the door opened, Nicole got her head up from looking at the logbook, to see who was there.

The little smile meant for the customers widened at recognizing someone she didn’t expect to see so soon, and her eyes got a new light.

The blockade was still ongoing, and she hadn’t got anything to do near the docks, to know that the privateers had returned with a good prize. Yes, people might be talking about the upcoming sales from the captured Spanish ship, but not around her – and she didn’t remember the name of the ship Adoracion was on, if he had ever told it to her. She remembered his name, repeated every night in prayer, and on Sundays and feast days in church too. Nicole had kept her promise to pray for his safe return, and obviously, lo and behold, he had kept his promise to come back to her.

She let the pencil drop from her hand in surprise, and it went rolling somewhere under the counter or under the shelves behind. But she already forgot about it, not bothering to look for it. Her eyes went big, and her mouth rounded his name in an exclamation of joy:

”Adoracion! Glad to see you back!”

The nervousness and fear that had pent up in his moments on the stoop passed through like a fog rolling off the bay when she looked up and greeted him with obvious joy. By name.

His expression opened like a blooming flower as he realized that her attraction had remained and the sailor smiled, his pleasure yet still debonaire. Drawing himself up straighter, the spaniard stepped through the door fully and closed it behind him, his eyes not leaving the lady behind the desk.

"Nicole!" he laughed, impressed with himself for understanding her french greeting. He had not been able to learn much of the language in his approximate month abroad. Not only for the lack of time, but for the lack of willing teachers. Neil had taught him a little, but they had been busy often - Neil with his importance aboard - and any others who could have taught him were not yet his friends. It had been slow going on meeting people. A failure Adoracion did not want to dwell on.

"I almost forgot my way here - All the streets look the same."

He was crossing the floor, looking briefly for customers, of which he found none, and making a line straight for her, or for the counter if she had remained behind it, his right hand extending for hers. "It is a pleasure to see you again."

Nicole was looking at him with joy, and she could read the same expression in his warm eyes. She didn’t ask if he had thought of her; the answer was obvious, otherwise he wouldn’t have returned here. The town was big enough for a roaming sailor. And he admitted that he had some difficulties in finding the shop – for a foreigner, it wasn’t impossible that the streets seemed the same – but, nevertheless, he was here, smiling to her and calling her name.

”I should show you the shorter route,” she answered with childish eagerness the comment about the streets, without thinking properly at what she was saying.

Her hand didn’t need any more invitation to seek his and get lost in it.

Me alegro verte de nuevo, mi querido amigo*” she said the expression learnt from Madame Lucia.

She was glad to see him, indeed, and she had been thinking about this moment for a long while. She hoped to surprise him with the Spanish words, and she had been looking forward to it. Well, her accent was giving the words a slightly different sound, but nothing to make them unrecognizable.

*I am glad to see you again, my dear friend

Addie's eye popped wide, his mouth agape, and then he began to laugh. She had spoken spanish! Obviously practiced and recited, but spanish nonetheless. And wasn't that the sign of some effort! So she had not simply been surprised by his visit - she had been hoping for it.

It felt grand. It felt so good that someone - anyone - cared that he had come - ah, to land.

"Very good!" he said in spanish, still chuckling, smiling at her and watching as she had taken his hand. His eyes were still for hers as he used his hold on her hand to lead her down the counter and around the end. He lifted their hands over any interferences on the counter, stopping as they got to the counter's open end and using his hand to guide her around to his side. It reminded him of a dance, and watching her, he thought that that was a great idea. He'd love to dance with her.

He continued still in his own language: "Fantastic! You learned this for me?"

Of course she had hoped for his visit. And her words succeeded to surprise him, exactly how his further gestures surprised her. The laughter was without any trace of irony – he had liked it and he praised her, he wasn’t mocking her mistakes.

His gestures suggested a sort of a dance to her too. And just because of this association of ideas, when he asked her if she had learnt it for him, she curtsied like at the end of a dance, still not willing to let his hand go:

Si, señor!

It was a warm, strong hand, which made her feel… better. She wasn’t able do discern how better, but it did.

Then, returning to French, she continued with childish enthusiasm:

”I can say much more – things here, days of the week, I can even count to ten in Spanish! My mistress taught me.”

But then her mood changed into a more serious one, and so changed her questions.

”How is your wound? Did it heal well? Have you got fever afterwards?”

She couldn’t forget the reason why they got acquainted.

Adoracion was silently dismayed at her return to Spanish. He hadn't expected her to be fluent, of course. A few minutes ago he hadn't expected her to know any Spanish at all, but hearing his language in her mouth - even as halting and uncertain as it was - had been nice. He hadn't had to think so hard or listen as carefully.

In her excitement, her words came quickly and Adoracion missed most of them, although his excited smile remained and his eyes followed her fingers as she gestured, and he nodded as though he understood. He heard something that sounded like spanish in there, somewhere...maybe she was telling him about how she'd learned.

And then her voice sobered up, some, and she pointed to his side. He recognized the tone, and some of the words, too, and knew that they were back to this topic.

That wasn't why he was here.

The Spaniard waved dismissively between them and pulled gently at her hand in his, hoping to draw her nearer. His left hand reached for her side, wanting to embrace her against him.

He spoke in slow french, his accent, too, laughable. "All is well. You spoke to God for me, and all is good."

He looked down on her before leaning in, boldly intending to extract a kiss.

Adoracion’s answer was clear, and his foreign accent was lovely, not laughable. Nicole would have listened to that warm voice for a long time, even if sometimes he mixed Spanish and French words and she had to pay attention to guess the meaning. It was just a new game for her mind, one that she enjoyed. And maybe exactly because she liked how it sounded on his mouth, this was why she was so determined to learn Spanish.

So he was well, and her prayers had helped. She smiled widely, letting herself pulled closer to him like under a spell.

Nicole sighed softly when enveloped by his arm, not having realized until that very moment that she had longed for his embrace. To feel protected by him, to feel that she mattered for him… of course he cared, since he returned to her.

Her gaze met his, with nothing more than happiness. She hadn’t thought that he wanted to kiss her, simply because it was nothing she was accustomed with. She was simply happy to be there in his arms. Maybe her pounding heart, her whole body, longing for his touch, were already waiting for that kiss, without making the effort to let her mind realize it.

He leaned in, his coffee eyes flashing from hers, and then to her mouth, as though waiting for some kindred response. It was not given. But then, too, the lady in his arms did not pull away nor turn her head. So after a brief hesitation he persisted forward, pressing his lips to hers without the initial questioning kiss he had lead in with the last time they'd been together.

If she allowed him, the kiss was gentle without being too brief. Her lips were soft against his sea-chapped ones. The smell of her - a mix of poultices and spices and a hearth fire, somewhere - filled his nose; it was much better than the smell of salt and ocean and mildew that he carried. Much warmer.

Much more feminine.

His heart rate jumped a little at the thought of getting acquainted with her more feminine side, but he pulled away from her mouth then.

Ultimately Nicole understood, just a moment before their lips met. His salty, parched lips caressed her, matching so nicely in the process, while the strange sweet fires in his eyes met her green ones. Her hands went to his shoulders, anchoring herself to him and enjoying his warmth.

For a few moments, she forgot herself, reacting instinctively, without any restraint. Her flushed cheeks and her tentative answer kiss were telling him better than anything else that she had missed him.

His kisses – the one now and the parting ones, one month ago - created a gnawing need she couldn’t name, nor understand, but she was aware that it could destroy her life's blueprint. She had been scolded last time for having kissed him in the shop, and she was doing it again, now, no matter that it was dangerous for her.

Only when he pulled away from her mouth she could protest softly:

”We shouldn’t! Somebody can see us again, and I don’t know what scandal it might cause. Madame Lucia scolded me and she said it was bad both for me and for the shop.”

Her hands, though, had their own opinion - they didn't say that "they shouldn't". They had found nice spots on his shoulders and they weren't too willing to let go.

Once they started she was all for it, and Addie would have smiled had his mouth not been so pre-occupied.

This was far from his first time with women, but something about this situation with Nicole made him feel light. It was a break from the brotherhood of the sea and the business of the brothel. It was not as cut and dry as lay down money, get laid in turn. There was some mystery. Curiosity. A desire to learn all about this woman, not to just get some probably-fake name to croon at the height of empty pleasure.

When he pulled away, she was all flushed cheeks and bright eyes and protests.

Her tone made that they were protests clear enough, but her body said otherwise. Hands on his shoulders, her abdomen pressed to his with his left arm about her... It always felt nice to hold a woman after being at sea.

"We shouldn't!" she said. He frowned slightly, play in his eyes. "Somebody can see us...I don't know what...it might cause. Madame Lucia...said it was bad...

She was upset because someone had walked in on them last time. It seems her boss had gotten upset with her. "Madame Lucia."

He didn't want to get her in trouble, so he gave his hands the command to let her go...

No result.

Ah, there, a little give. The arm about her waist loosened up a little, allowing some room between their bodies. His hand remained on her hip, rather than around her waist. His right hand had been holding hers, but it had relinquished it when she'd reached for his shoulder and now it, too, found her hip.

"Madame Lucia," he said in slow French. "She..." he shook his head and flipped back to Spanish, annoyed that he couldn't find the words. "She is angry that I was here?"

It felt so nice being held by him… No wonder that neither of them two was willing to put distance between them. Well, they ultimately had to, at least a little. He was still inebriatingly close to her, and his presence made her… not only slightly dizzy, but also more perceptive. Enough to grasp the sense of most of what he was saying, even if not of each word in part.

But answering his question now was not as easy.

”Not for this. She was angry that we kissed here and that man saw us. But she wasn’t angry you were here, talking to me. I am allowed to invite you to lunch today too,” she smiled.

Nicole wasn’t lying, even if it was more to the story. Of course having that old man see them kissing and complain to Madame Lucia couldn’t have got without consequences. It meant, first and foremost, that she wasn’t doing her job in the shop, which was ruining both her reputation and the shop owner’s.

This was accompanied by the genuine question: ”Do you love him?” at which she had answered decidedly negative, explaining that he was a good friend, and that none of them two had anyone else in this world.

A new lecture followed, on a warm, friendly tone this time, warning her to take care what she was doing, because otherwise she’d end being a heartbroken, unwed mother. And this was something Nicole could understand in her own way, because Madame Lucia was talking from experience. She was in love with the Rear-Admiral, she gave birth to his son… and only his high position made it possible to arrange a wedding, so that the child had an official, legitimate father. This was a rare luck which most girls seduced by seafarers didn’t have.

This continued with being told that such a loose behaviour for a young woman would start gossips and make her the subject of disdain for all neighbours. That for such a once time mistake she might be labeled in a way which would prevent her finding a husband. Not that she wanted one right now, but some day she might.

But this had happened one month ago. At the moment, in his arms, still trembling after this kiss and secretly craving for more – more kisses and more time against his chest, hold in a protective and tender embrace – she didn’t know anymore. If Ghislaine or Madame Lucia asked her again ”Do you love him?” she didn’t have the strength and sincerity to deny it anymore… neither to admit it openly. She simply did not know – but weren’t kisses and hugs, in songs and poems, exactly the way love was shown?

She hadn’t known love before. But she hadn’t felt this way with any man either.

He frowned again in conversation, swallowing tightly as she answered his concern. She wasn't as good at breaking down things into super-simple sentences for him, and once he slipped on a word, he missed the two or three after that... He felt like a fool. But he tried nonetheless to keep up.

He wasn't sure, but it seemed Nicole's boss' anger had been at them being caught by that fellow the last time. And that she had invited him to lunch. That had been such a delicious meal...he had fantasized over it almost as much as he had her...

"I did not want to get you in..." he said in french, pausing as he fought for the word, which he added in Spanish, "Trouble."

He tried French again. "When are you...done? Here. You come with me. We'll...go out."

Raising his eyebrows, Adoracion gave her a small smirk, proud of both his attempt at her language and his plan.

He seemed to understand, and he tried to apologize. Even if Nicole didn’t understand all words, she understood the tone and the intent behind them.

”It was not so bad, Adoracion!” she smiled, reassuringly putting her hand over his. ”They were just words, and she was right.”

Of course the reputation warning was right, and Madame Lucia had no bad intentions.

He came with an unexpected invitation, and her eyes widened in surprise. Today was the day of surprises, and now… he was asking her out? She smiled, answering quickly:

”It would be wonderful! I’ll wait for you at five o’clock. But until then, you are my guest for lunch. You have eaten enough your … ship food!”

Her tone was first amazed, then determined, and with slight disdain for said ship food. She shouted for Ghislaine, then she took his hand, as if explaining with this that no protest would be taken into account. Anything else than protests, yes.

[Lol, see? this is what comes of not pre-deciding a thread :P. Glad you like.]

She said something about lunch, called for the servant, who looked at them with a knowing eye, and dragged him off towards the kitchen. Who was he to argue? The ship was not happy to provide its mates' meals anymore now that they were back in port, and even if they were merciful and did for those still onboard, it was just the same old hard tack and salted pork - whatever was left over between the provisions on the spanish prize and their own ship.

And Adoracion had learned in short order what a pleasure eating with the French woman could be.

Their meal would pass, like the last one between them, in relative silence, with Addie complementing the food through moans of delight and satisfaction and a request for a second helping. Trying to communicate wasn't much fun, but if he could somehow just show her all his meanings, perhaps then...

Still, in his thoughts, he considered the night they would have together, and all of the good times that could be planned that wouldn't require too much of this...guessing each other's words.

The sailor and the shopgirl sat, enjoying each other's company in the knowledge that there were a few days, still, to spend together.
