He wasn't supposed to be doing this.

The privateer led his prize down the fairly empty dockside street, passing bars from which music and light flowed, moving quickly at the sound of anything rowdy so as to best avoid it.

Was it the cool of the night air, or was it the bond he felt growing between them that made him walk in a most familiar manner with her - his arm about her waist? Was it the excitement of the deception, or the excitement of the privacy that made him feel as though lightning ran through his veins?

They came upon the white-bellied breast of the low-slung Shark, and Adoracion pressed a finger softly to Nicole's lips before pointing it out.

He paused them a few feet from the gangway, slowing their feet to a stop as he sought her eyes in the dark, lit only by the escaped beams of tavern lanterns and moonlight.

"This is the 'Shark.'" he spoke very softly, and in French except for the ship's name, which he put in English. "Shhhh... You want to go up?"

There were probably a few lonely bodies on board, but certainly no one should have been keeping watch, and really it only should have been a few. After all, they were recently in port! Everyone was really enjoying that time off the ship.

Nicole would have walked with him till dawn, or till the end of the world, whichever would come first. She simply felt well with him, next to him. It was warm, and safe, and nice. They were scandalously close one to the other, his arm around her waist and hers around his. She hadn’t seen even the ladies of the night so close to their latest prey… but all the cats were black when enveloped by the dark night, and she didn’t fear that anyone would recognize her as Madame Lucia’s helper. What if, from the distance, anybody would have thought of her to be one of the soiled doves the privateer had picked up for that night? She and him knew it was different.

Soon they arrived to the docks and Adoracion showed her his ship, without forgetting to ask for silence. Yes, it made sense. Nicole sort of knew that ships weren’t for women. And she was quite afraid of ships, honestly, remembering with horror her crossing of the ocean, when she was ten. But a ship at anchor, not intending to leave with her, was not as frightful. Especially not when Adoracion was with her.

It was his way to show her what it was like for him to be away from her, to share his life with her, or at least so she understood it. He knew how she was doing in his absence, he knew the herborist’s shop with the storeroom and the kitchen… So, it was somehow normal for her to be curious about the ship she had heard about.

”Yes” she more nodded than said, seeking for his gaze again.

They passed the gangplank without putting any distance between them – but now, for Nicole, it was more because she was afraid not to fall into the water than from any other desire.

She said yes, softly, too, and the both of them mounted the short gangplank, Adoracion letting her go first with him just behind (it was only large enough for them to walk in single file) so that he could place his hands on her hips ... for stability's sake, of course.

He paused as she navigated her dress over the starboard side and then followed after her, agile as a man who lived in such a world should be in the comfort of his salty home.

The ship was about as pleasant now as it ever was going to be. One of the first chores upon landing port was that the ship be scrubbed down and every bilge emptied. It was clean - not that it was ever horrid but it was dry, too, having suffered no rain or spraying waves. Also it was not crowded, as Adoracion had to guess there was probably six men aboard, if that many, and likely chances were that they wouldn't be back from the bars until very late, or else were already sleeping from a long day of drinking.

He stood beside her where they had boarded about midship, and gave he deck a cursory glance in the dark before turning his head over his shoulder to examine the deck of the neighboring vessel. No lanterns. No figures.

"You been on a ship before?"

Nicole hadn’t been sure if to protest or not when Adoracion put his hands on her hips. Well, in the dance they had been just a little higher… and if it meant now making sure that she wasn’t falling down into the mix of metal wires and fittings which were to be found in the water of the harbour right between two ships, she’d better be thankful to him. Being a good swimmer on a desert little beach or in the river crossing the estate at home, in France, where she had learnt to swim, didn’t mean anything in a harbour crowded with anchored boats and ships, and furthermore when having all clothes on.

And yes, she had barely stepped aboard when the hem of her dress was caught in something. She had to be even more careful not to have it torn apart. Unless she wanted to attack her savings for bad days… and this wouldn’t be a good idea. Ultimately she managed to solve the problem with no textile incidents, and she looked around. The darkness wasn’t showing great thing, but it was Adoracion’s home and workplace at the same time… exactly how the shop was now her home and workplace at the same time.

She looked at him, unsure what part to go, and expecting guidance. At his question, she answered in a whisper.

”Yes. I was ten when we came from France. The ship was bigger, and dirtier, and very crowded. I remember the foul smells, the storms and how seasick I was. I am afraid of ships since then.”

"Afraid?" he asked incredulously, hardly prepared to believe that she could be afraid - she had so readily come with him when he had suggested it. Inside of him a small pit opened a little in his stomach where he began to think that once again his tentative plan might be foiled.

"You do not act afraid." he spoke softly, standing very near to her - ah, so that their voices did not have to carry, of course. He looked down on her with a slight smile, searching out her eyes. "Besides, there is nothing to be afraid of. It is not as though anything can happen to a boat as it sits idly at port."

The Guadalupe creaked sympathetically at its berth.

Yes, she had been afraid of ships for all the nine years since the crossing of the Atlantic. That had been a horrible experience for the young Nicole at the first encounter with high waves, seasickness, suffocation, bad balance and the precarity of life at sea, corroborated with the revelation of the many faces of poverty, as seen in the crowded space of the lower deck of a passenger’s ship carrying more souls with high hopes for a better life in the Colonies than earthly goods these beings had been left with.

Sometimes she still had nightmares about being aboard the ship again, but this happened usually when something else hindered her breathing. Her usual nightmares were different. Being caught in a dead-end alley by a pursuer, after having desperately run through half the town.

Nicole looked at him and answered equally softly the statement that she couldn't be afraid:

”You haven’t been with me to see people dying around me. Including the children I was playing with. So many who couldn’t make it to Port de Paix. And you haven’t been in my dreams to see if I am afraid or not.”

He had a point, though. Exactly what she had said to herself before – there was nothing to happen to a ship when at anchor.

”You are right,” she replied, a trustful gaze meeting his. ”This is exactly why I got the courage to be here with you. And I was curious to see your home… exactly how you have seen mine,” she confessed childishly.

Fear of the sea was no silly phobia. Adoracion had been scared of it, too. Sometimes he still was. A storm at sea was no laughing matter. When men were swept overboard and the rain made the deck slick enough to slide a man from bow to stern with the pitching of the vessel. When sails tore in the dark and wind whipped lines first one way and then another at deadly speeds. When shrapnel from you own ship - or another, lost to the waves - pierced your hull. When you took on water. When you held a rope fast between your raw palms and yanked against it with only Death to offer encouragement beside you.

There was plenty to fear. But most good folks really had no idea of it all.

He grew a little sombre as she spoke of the reasons she had to be afraid. Yes, of course... and yet, she was here - the reason being, apparently, that it was at port, and she was with him.

In his home.

"I will show you," he said, his whisper taking on a playful edge. She had given him a tour of her home, he would give her a tour in kind. Of what, exactly, would depend.

Turning away from her so that he stood side by side, Adoracion gestured an hand in a sweeping motion towards the whole expanse of the deck. "The deck. We sweat, and blood, and - well, some men cry - here."

Nicole tried to see through the darkness what he was showing her. An empty deck, but from his gesture it could have been anything grand. And yes, somehow it was. It was his castle upon the seas. And, exactly how he was telling her, not only his – there were a whole crew, sweating, working, bleeding in fight or maybe also with work accidents… anything could happen.

”Crying in pain, when wounded?” she asked. ”Or your prisoners, crying for mercy?”

She was interested in anything pertaining to his life. And she could imagine from others’ stories what remained untold. If her imagination had any grain of truth, though, she couldn’t know.

Crying in pain? Crying for mercy? Why, yes. He supposed those were options too.

"Pues," he laughed, continuing in French. "Yes. But not all. Some because they want for home."

Adoracion shook his head in a dismissive manner. They all missed home - well, the ones who had a home or who cared for land, anyway. Adoracion did not have this problem except when he had someone to miss... a problem he had just given himself again. Maybe.

He remembered to lower his voice again and reached for her waist, holding her to his side as he walked to the near foremast. He approached to its foot, avoiding cleats and lines as he guided her, turning her if she would allow, and pressing her back to the mast. Gently.

He gave her little space.

"C'est... the mast" English this time.

Nicole blinked. Yes, it made sense. It was simply human. Everybody, at a certain time, was longing for home. Madame’s man included. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so happy to return to her. However, there were men like Adoracion, about whom she knew already that he had no home.

”True,” she confirmed.

Her head, as she nodded in approval, touched his upper arm as it suddenly moved, reaching for her waist. It felt reassuring. And how could she be frightened anymore? It was just an adventure. Something to remember. Something worth writing in her journal afterwards. This whole day and evening was worth pondering about later. Maybe tomorrow, or maybe even later, when he’d leave for the sea again and she’d miss him.

She let herself guided, as light-paced as she had been during the dance. Actually, the way he turned her around seemed a bit like in the dance.

”Oui, le mat”, she repeated in French after he had said it in English.

She didn’t know how all the little things were called, but of course she had heard of masts. And it was not big difference from the word he had used.

”Here is where you hang the offenders?” she joked when he pressed her back to the mast.

Her smile and the playful lights in her green eyes showed clearly that it was meant only as a joke, even if she had heard stories of the past.

Adoracion grabbed a line on her left in one hand and a line on her right in the other, trapping Nicole between his arms. He stood near to her, the hem of her dress covering the tips of his boots, and looked down on her.

Her joke made him laugh. He did so quietly, and leaned in towards her to catch the light in her eyes as it was hidden by the world's dark.

"Yes," he confirmed, also joking. He had never personally seen a man hung from the mast of a ship he was on, although he had heard tales, and once seen a corpse upon another ship dangling there.

Adoracion'as hands slowly began to slip down the lines, flying back to her body when they were waist-high. They met her body and kept running down as he spoke. "When someone is bad, we raise them up-!"

The sailor, whose hands had made themselves secure on Nicole's waist if she did not dissuade him, gave her lift at the moment, pinning her between the mast and his hips so that they were, at long last, eye to eye.

Scrum

Scrum had been on the lower deck , checking the binds for those that needed replacing on the smaller sails, Jay had not put him on report nor docked him money for the accident’ of shooting the Captain of the Spanish ship after the surrender, but he had given him extra tasks, that he knew was the Captains ‘ peaceful’ way of saying, you did wrong, but I can understand why you did it.

He had taken the punishments with a nod of acceptance, tiring and boring at times, but it had been worth it to see that damned captain groan in pain, and the shock in his eyes.

He had come on deck to throw the frayed thins over board and to cut himself some fresh rope that would need splicing and fresh Grommet knots to be created, sitting to the rope stack he missed the couple coming on at first but the sounds of laughter and quietened voices had him curious as he rose from the dark shadow under the rail and approached to see Addie and the girl in a ‘clutch.’

With a grin he approached.

‘Now then no one told me we had ‘wenches to amuse ourselves with …..Where’s the others? Surely not just one for all of us? If it’s just the one be sure not to exhaust the girl before I get my go’

His eyes roamed over the women, she was sure one fine piece, his body began reacting as he grinned his supposed best ‘handsome smile at the wench.

This was indeed a sort of an unusual adventure, and Nicole was excited. Her heart was beating loudly, alerted, but no, she couldn’t be afraid when Adoracion was protecting her. Those ropes around her – she didn’t know they were called lines – weren’t connected, in her mind, with being a prisoner or anything else than being secure. And he was so close… nothing could harm her.

In the next second, her feet lost the contact with the deck, being in the air…After a first knot in the stomach caused by surprise, she was feeling like a baby – babies were raised and held, even if not exactly this way. But it made sense – she knew she was much bigger than a baby.

Her hands found their way to another confirmation of safety, by getting locked behind his nape. Now she was sure she couldn’t fall anymore from that precarious position, and she enjoyed the opportunity of looking into his eyes from close.

”What crime I am punished for?” Nicole whispered, while still grinning happily. ”And what’s the punishment?”

Right then, the punishment came. The most unexpected one - being caught. She didn't understand English, to know what exactly the other man had told him, but that sly grin was surely a predator's, and the tone didn't announce anything good.

Instinctively, she tightened her grip round Adoracion's neck. Now she was afraid.

The Spaniard settled himself between Nicole's legs and felt her arms reach about his shoulders, her hands clasped about the nape of his neck. He was about to return her playful banter, when his entire body tensed at the sound of a not-so-secretive voice behind him. It sounded like -

Adoracion looked over his shoulder, catching sight of the other man, and with a cuss under his breath, he reached for Nicole and let her down gently from where he had pinned her. When her feet touched the ground, Adoracion turned to met his crewmate.

"Scrum," he greeted in a tone that said he wasn't sure what to say. He was caught, then. And by someone he wasn't sure about, but had the sinking suspicion that he was a bit of a snitch.

"Ahhhh," he greeted in English, knowing Nicole didn't understand. His eyes searched over Scrum's shoulder for any others. "There aren't any wenches." clearing his throat, Addie stepped to the side a bit to give Scrum a clear view of Nicole. Offering his arm in Nicole's direction, he took up the attitude of introducing her.

"This is Nicole. She is my intended. She wanted to see the ship before we leave again. Nicole?" he spoke to her deliberately, although it was in English, hoping she might understand. He "introduced" his mate to her. "Scrum."

She wouldn't understand, right? Hopefully not. He didn't need the little lady getting any crazy ideas. She was nice and all, but he wasn't about to asked her to marry him. Contrarily, he also wasn't going to share her, or have her reputation sullied more than it already had been.

Scrum

‘ Intended!’

Scrums lips opened to say something else, something crude, a joke that would be fit for sailors ears and banter that was rude but meant friendly too, but he ended up just grinning, and wiping off his right hand on his work shirt, the front and back of his palm wiped over the cloth before offering it out to the lady in question, but speaking still to Addie.

‘ So cupid went and struck you eh? Damn I can see why, fine lass she is. Looks and body to match, what’s not to like in that. Quiet one too. I likes that, can't stand all that nagging.‘

Scrum sniffed and laughed, his eyes not hiding the fact he was giving the girl the once over, with particular interest in her bosom and cleavage.

‘ She happy to overlook you being a damned Spaniard then?’

Again it was Scrums sense of humour, he had accepted Addie as one of the crew now, he had shown himself winning a prize thanks to his shooting so he didn't care any longer where the man came from, except it gave him good fodder for jokes at his expense, for a laugh.

‘ If she comes to her senses before the wedding, send her my way, I only have 3 wives, and none in this port so she wouldn't have no competition when berthed here….’

His grin was feral, as he smelt the air, her smell intoxicating compared to that of the ships usual smell.

‘Damn women smell good. I wish we had our pay, I need some time down the dock side.'
Said with feeling and a deep yearning.
Realising then he was interrupting there night, he grinned again, and elbowed Addie like a fellow conspirator.

' Don't mind me, you get back to giving her one, I'll not be telling the Captain we has company.'

Giving him a wink that was not hidden from the women, he grinned again, expecting to see the good show from back at his rail, then looking to Nicole and giving her a wink that said silently..... good for you girlie, have fun.
