Kingdom of Italy![]() ![]() Welcome to the embassy of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. Our country is pleased to share with the world our plans for maintaining the european balance of power, advancing latin culture throughout the mediterranean basin, as well as bringing together our italian brethren still suffering the shame of not living in Italy. This century has brought the people of Italy together, but the fate of the motherland now faces a deadly threat: insidious rebellion by the enemies of civilization. It is our most sincere desire that the people of Europe may abandon selfish struggles between nations and come together in fighting off this threat to the order of the continent, so that we may extend our civilization to the furthest confines of the world. Foreign Policy To maintain Great Power status To unify with our Kingdom those regions of historically italian heritage To contribute to the advancement of underdeveloped western nations To promote and secure a humane treatment of the colonial subjects of european nations To maintain good relations with the nations of Europe Domestic Policy To supress any and all rebellions, and maintain the King firmly in his rightful place To expand, modernize and reorganize our army and navy To further advance industrialization in the Peninsula To eradicate illiteracy To come to an understanding with HH The Pope in regards to the Papal Question King Umberto, of the House of Savoia Heir apparent: Vittorio Emanuele III |

Current territorial claims Tunis Formerly a territory of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, nationalist rebels opportunistically took advantage of the conflicts of unification in Italy following the Spedizione dei Mille to take control of the country. The Kingdom of Italy considers Tunis an integral part of its territory and intends to annex it shortly Abyssinia The Ethiopian Empire has by force claimed Eritrea, which was to be granted to The Kingdom of The Two Sicilies as per european treaties. The Kingdom of Italy holds a legitimate claim on the whole of Eritrea (including the as of yet uncolonized Djibouti). Furthermore, the people of Italy have long considered themselves responsible for protecting isolated christians in Africa; thus, The Kingdom of Italy intends to wholly annex Ethiopia, as has been made known repeatedly to other european powers. Lombardia Lombardia is populated almost exclusively by italians, yet remains part of the Austrian Empire. The Kingdom of Italy considers thus that it is just for the lombards to be part of the italian nation. However, the House of Savoy considers the Habsburgs friends, and are in deep gratitude for their support for italian unification under Savoy rule. Thus, The Kingdom of Italy will seek a diplomatic resolution for the Lombard Question, and has no intention on taking up arms against Austria. Any attempts to annex, sphere or colonize (in the case of Djibouti, legitimately part of the italian claimed Eritrea) any of the mentioned territores will be considered hostile to italian interests. |

The United Netherlands warmly greets the new Kingdom of Italy. We hope our two nations can prosper. The Netherlands also recognises Italian claims to rule over all Italian peoples, and, as such, recognises their claims to Venizia and Lombardia. However, we hope that this can happen smoothly and agreeably.

The Spanish have been in a internal and foreign disaster since the coronation of King Carlos V, and we shall accept this unfortunate truth. We shall begin the process of sorting out the issues of the times immediately. We thank the Italian government for the information, and shall process it thoroughly. To the Italian Unification: It is unfortunate that the Bourbon line has ended in Italy, but if the current rulers of the Italians are a brother-in-arms with the Spanish, we shall gracefully accept the Italian nation as an ally and good friend. To the Morocco Question: Once our Central Government can absorb the information coming in, the Spanish claim on the nation of Morocco is pending. We shall give our stance on the issue within due time. To the American Colonies: This is also pending, once we can catalog the armed forces and reorganize them for proper war. If this seems it can be enough, we shall make a decision during the proper time. |

France congratulates on Italy unifying. We're rather relieved the Italian state was unified by the House of Savoy in Sardinia-Piedmont, it deeply troubled France that we recieved no gratitude from the Bourbons in Naples after we intervened in the Austrian war against the Papal States. Without this intervention, Italy would have one less state than they have now. We hope the new government will take a different approach to relations with France, and we hope that the newly unified Italian state can rise to the power of her fellow European nations, both militarily and industrially. On another note, France requests a private meeting with the Savoys(sent you a PM).

Signed. EDIT: Shouldn't a penalty be stipulated? It isn't that I don't trust you, of course, but we need to have a guarantee. Why not make it -100 prestige?

To the Italian King:Although we appreciate your concern for the sovereignty of the American people, we find it troubling that you are concerning your newly-formed nation with U.S. affairs. We respectfully ask, do you not have domestic priorities to take care of? You ask us to abandon an affair that has claimed American lives already. We cannot justify a status quo peace, for those Americans who gave their lives would have died in vain if no gains are made. Further, if we make a petty peace with the Russian-Mexican alliance, we show weakness to the rest of the word that the U.S. is not good on its word to protect those under its sphere of influence. We will not allow such a decline to our international prestige. Further, can the same not be said about the Italians conquering Tunis? Have they not wasted Italian lives conquering this small defenseless country once? Were Italian settlers in Tunis not run off or worse in the last decade? We find it troubling you espouse a doctrine of peace for affairs that have no Italian interest at heart while at the same time, you make backroom deals with France for the division of North Africa. These sort of political games is why the U.S. has always wished to stay out of European politics. We humbly ask you stay out of ours here in the Americas. Our goals in South America are noble: we wish for countries in South America to grow in peace without petty European wars killing their people and draining their wealth. Surely your highness sees the benefits of peace for a new nation. Best wishes to the new King. |

[OOC] I meant to ask you what you mean by ''During a diplomatic crisis, neither signatory will take a position in opposition to the other signatory''. Does that mean that (1) if you are one of the two feuding sides in a crisis, I may not take a side against you (which seems reasonable), or does it mean that (2) if none of us is one of the two feuding sides, and one of us takes a side as a GP, the other one is not allowed to take the opposing side? That doesn't seem very reasonable, because it would become a competition between us on who can take a side more quickly, so as to screw the other one, as it may force the slower person to either lose prestige or go against his allies. Also, a penalty should be added: 4. The penalty for breaking this treaty will be -150 prestige. If the interpretation to clause number 3 is what I outline in (1), then consider the treaty signed. Also consider the treaty signed if you intended it to mean (2) but are willing to interpret it as (1). |

In the midst of a series of revolutions in Italy and its neighboring countries, and with the Kingdom of Italy in the eve of war against the USA and its allies, HM King Vittorio Emanuele II passed away in Rome on the ninth of January of 1878. He has been succeeded by HM King Umberto. The prayers of the new King of Italy are on the souls of the italian soldiers currently engaged in combat in the americas, along of those of all our friends and foes. HM wishes for a quick end to the hostilities. |

The Treaty of Turin![]() Delegations of the United States of America, The Spanish Empire and The Kingdom of Italy have been summoned into the Palazzo Madama, in Torino, to sign a three way alliance that will cement a new era of friendship between the people of the Americas and Europe. The host of the meeting, Prime Minister Agostino Depretis, has drafted a treaty of unity and mutual support that we hope all delegations will find satisfactory. 1. The USA, The Spanish Empire and The Kingdom of Italy hereby enter into an offensive and defensive military alliance, and are compelled (under a penalty) to militarily assist their allies, unless explicitly released from the obligation by the nations going into war. 2. If rebel insurrections are happening in one of the contracting nations, the others are inclined if asked to intervene and dispose of the rebel threat. 3. All three nations may base both army and naval forces in either nation during times of peace. 4. All three nations recognize claims made by the other two, and shall uphold those claims. 5. If war is made that involves either nation and one of the signatories is allied with the aggressor nation, they shall stay neutral in the conflict. (OOC: For example Italy is allied with France, France attacks Spain, Italy shall not become involved in the conflict.) 6. Penalty for breaching this treaty will be -150 prestige. [X] [ ] [X]
