![]() After a mysterious and completely unexpected episode of Sultan Mahmud II's indigestion of large quantities of kerosine in his private chambers, followed by an order of flambéed ducks eaten much too quickly, the new Sultan Abdülmecid I assumed the position on 1. of January 1836. Luckily none of the visitors, former high-ranking members of the Janissaries beseeching the Sultan for their rightful reinstatement, were injured. ![]() In unrelated news, a new party reactionary part with a rather high number of former members have been delegated most of the responsibilities of government by the new Sultan. It is the opinion of Abdülmecid I, that the Empire has neglected its provinces in Asia and Africa for far too long, and that this has resulted in unacceptably fluctuating borders in what is the lawful territory of the Ottoman Empire. Land claims: - Subjugate the rebels in Tripoli. - Bring back the unruly regions of Egypt, who maintain an illegal government to the detriment of the people. - Assume territorial dominion over the Arabian Peninsula with the exception of Aden. - In terms of colonization, at this time, we are drawing up plans to colonize only regions that are landlocked and connected to our current goals. That is Libya, Chad, Kordofan and Darfur. An outline of the southern border that we will work towards: ![]() Diplomatic goals: - Find partners in Europe, who are willing to respect our expansion in the Arabian lands in exchange for beneficial arrangements. - Maintain good relations with the government of Persia, assuming that they will respect all of our territorial goals. - Realizing that our current goals will stretch our administrative and military capabilities, we fear that Tunis and Algiers are beyond our current ability to recover. - While we do not claim Ethiopia as ours to subjugate for the time being, we will be saddened if our main supplier of coffee was to be annexed by another nation without at least consulting us. Internal goals: - Build a canal for the entire world to use between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. As Suez is estimated to be most favorable lands for these, and Egypt is the rightful claim of the Ottoman Empire, we strongly reject the idea of outside interference in this matter. - Raise literacy and start the development of a modern, industrialized state. - Consider this whole "democracy" thing everybody in Europe seem so fixated with. Active treaties - The Alliance of the Three Emperors (6/6) Expired treaties - Treaty of Oriental Cooperation - Ottoman - Austrian treaty of non-aggression - mostly superseded by The Alliance of the Three Emperors. - The Alliance of the Three Emperors (to be renewed?) - Treaty of Hadibu (4/4) |

In regards to our dominion over Egypt: We are looking for nations to back us up on the international stage, and we are open to negotiations when it comes to support for our dominion over Egypt. However. The capability to build the canal is the one thing we are very concerned about. Asking us to be split into two pieces by a foreign power is a large concession. Imagine asking France would allow a foreign power to hold a line of land from the Calais to Montpelier.

Given the sacrifices made in the wake of the Egyptian aggression, we have changes our territorial map to this:![]() Note that any attempt made to gain land in the Arabian Peninsula, with the current exception of the Russian takeover of Aden, will be viewed as an act of war towards the Ottoman Empire itself. Note that the Ottoman Empire does not claim the lands held by Oman in Africa and will take no action should a war erupt with the sole goal of taking over those lands. - Abdülmecid I

First Imperial Newsletter, 1847 Celebrations in Istanbul and the two Holy Cities of Arabia as the region of Hedjaz gracefully accepted the dual authority of the Sultan and Caliph. Finally Mecca and Medina are under the direct protection of the Sublime Porte. Never shall Muslim pilgrims feel unsafe when visiting these holy sites again. Soon, all of Arabia but the port of Aden shall serve the will of the Ottoman Empire, and in return, be served according to their needs. ![]() [size0]Mecca, circa 1850. But these were not the only Holy Places where the separatist nonsense had spread. The Levant, including the Holy Land, were liberated and shall now be open to any People of the Book - be they Muslim, Christian or Jew. ![]() [size0]Refurbished Yohanan Ben-Zakai synagogue in Jerusalem. Observance of any religion is permitted in the Empire... Under supervision and assuming they pay their taxes, of course. There can be little doubt that this development was brought on by the subjugation of the illegal separatist movement in Egypt - a movement that was riling up the peasants against the Caliph himself. Luckily, these unholy warriors were quickly culled, though the wise Caliph has seen fit that the southernmost regions should be administered by other great nations of Europe, so that he might focus on bringing back the very few remaining errant Egyptian subjects. The Caliph would like to extend his gratitude to the nations of Europe that they saw fit to help oust the rebels and gave no credence to their false pretense of self-determination. ![]() [size0]Just a tiny group of misfits. Indeed, The Empire does not stand alone. Through the mutual co-ordination with the great Kingdom of Portugal, the last "free" rebel stronghold - Oman - will soon be ruled directly by a wali appointed by the great Caliph himself. Of course, Portugal was generously rewarded for their service to the Empire. After releasing the Moldavian and Wallachian nations, intending that they should remain divided and free as they were, they quickly united in obvious spite of the will of the Caliph. The Austrian and Russian Empires quickly took upon themselves to seize control of these areas as the Caliph refused to aid the errant Romanians after this grievous insult. Doubtlessly, those lands are in better hands now. For now, upon the entry of the Siret river into the Danube, lies the corner of three great empires. ![]() The Caliph has seen fit that an official consensus should be made and the results should soon be available.

[align=center] [/align]The Russian government is happy to send our greetings to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, now that our agreements have been fulfilled on both ends so that our friendship may prosper. Our alliance have helped stabilize the region here in the east, that otherwise could have been thrown into horrible danger due to certain nations and their greedy imperialistic tendencies. As such we hope for a continued alliance and great work between our two Empires, as well as close ties in the coming decades. We also wish to congratulate the Sultan on the integration of the Egyptians who no doubt are better off now that their silly rebellion has ended. |

This was an interesting 10 years for the Ottoman Empire. - First of all, The Ottomans got their first taste of democracy as all fr.. um, all [size0]Turkish, aristocratic, landed males were eligible. In total about 0,24% of the total population were allowed to vote for their new grand Vizier. In order to curb the tendency for Grand Viziers to last only a few months, they are now elected to the position as long as the party that sponsored them remain in power. ![]() - Their choice, Numan Bey of the reactionary Nizam-i Alem... may have reflected personal interests more than their concerns for the state. ![]() [size0]Abdülmecid I is currently considering the the possibilities of extending the vote to "Everyone else but those aristocratic sycophants." - In better news, thanks to vast foreign investments, it is now possible to take a train from the eastern shore of Istanbul to Mecca. ![]() - In regard to the recent war concerning Sardinian aggression towards other sovereign Italian states, the Sultan notes that the death toll exceeded the entire population of the contested island of Sicily. - As for the rumors of bi-yearly uprisings in Egypt in excess of 200.000 men, the Sultan would like to curb any such silly numbers. If that were true, the entire population of Egypt would have been killed by now! The rebels only number in the hundreds and are inspired by as of yet unknown foreign agitators. Demographics of 1856 Population: 36.637 million Ethic groups of note (4%+): 29,5% Turkish, 14,3% Egyptian Arabia, 11% Arabic, 8,7% Greek, 7,3% Bedouin, 6,2% Bulgarian, 5,4% Albanian, 4% Kurdish. [align=center] [/align]In 1836 our predecessors signed the Alliance of Three Emperors, as you both know then Russia has been a strong support of the alliance ever since, going as far as sending massive amounts of manpower to fight in the Italian Campaign against the French and their allies. For while we may have lost the war, we have not come out as weaker, instead we have grown even more powerful. This is just one of the many reasons that I, Alexander II, Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias, once again like my father seek to maintain the relations and alliances between our three Empires. That is the reason that I am now writing this message to you in hopes that you feel the same way, as such the Russian Empire would like to extend the agreement between our Empires and keep the peace in Eastern Europe, as we have done for the last two decades. |

Imperial newsletter: In a dire turn of events, our beloved sultan, Abdülmecid I, was found dead in his private chambers in December 1864. Shocking evidence points to foul play, as the body appeared to have been covered with human bite marks. Upon the walls were writings in his blood: "The sins of Te Henua 'Enana consumes you." Not far from the location of this heinous crime was the body of Grand Vizier Numan Bey Pasha, who appeared to have stumbled upon the scene of the crime, only to trip down the stairs and break his neck. As the Sultan's loyal pet, the Australian Tree-Climbing Horror Bear "Sparky" had light bruising when it was found after the accident, it is assumed that the Grand Vizier tripped over the poor, harmless animal in his panic. Following this, in order to cull the dozens of claimants to the throne, every male member of the Osman Family was locked inside the Imperial Palace until only one remained. After a few days the last survivor, one of the sons of Abdülmecid I, 24-year old Murad V, was found hiding in a broom closet, armed only with an old mop. ![]() [size0]Laugh all you want, that mop eliminated at least two contestants to the throne. [size0] His first words were in regards to the new election method: "Let's not do that again." Followed by: "At least Sparky is alright." Followed by more substantial breakdown of the new imperial policy into five main branches: 1: Democratic advance. The Empire has been too sluggish in implementing democratic reform and even now only the landed aristocratic elite are allowed to vote and harass the opponents of the current ruling party. I shall work to personally advance the popularity of the liberal factions so that the voting class may be expanded and political parties no longer allowed to perform the controversial "slap the belly" method to encourage voting for specific candidates. ![]() [size0]We have a long way to go. 2: Industrial development. Although the Sultanate, largely thanks to our superb artisans, is one of the top 5 producers of many products such as Machine Parts, Fruits, Wool, Furniture, Explosives*, Artillery*, Grain ... Opium, we shall continue to endorse industrial development and educate our people to increase their literacy so that they might better be able to read instructions on how to perform simple, repetitive tasks in factories. [size0]* Ottoman artisans are a strange and sometimes dangerous breed. 3: Colonization and expansion. Even after we gave Tunis the great gift of limited autonomy, they showed their contempt for our rightful authority by declaring themselves completely independent. Their insolence was swiftly punished and they have been brought back under the direct control of Constantinople. Let this be a lesson for us that any movements towards regional autonomy will only bring disaster. In regards to earlier goals of expansion, it is my belief that they were far too restricted compared to the true potential of the Sultanate to govern the vast reaches of Africa. Shown here is the new planned colonial expansion: ![]() 4: Military More guns! More soldiers! More ships! MORE FIREPOWER! MORE AUSTRALIAN TREE-CLIMBING HORROR BEARS TO BRING BLOOD VENGEANCE! (The Sultan had to lie down a little) 5: The Germans We don't know why they are here. We don't know why they won't leave. We have contacted the North German government, yet still they remain. We advice any citizens traveling through the deserts of Kurdufan not to make contact with the rogue German soldiers who have set up permanent residence in the region. ![]()

Imperial newsletter: Africa By far the most significant development in these years was the rapid expansion of the Ottoman Empire into Africa beyond Egypt and North Africa. As the other colonizing powers did not contest any of the land claimed by the Ottoman Empire, neither did we infringe upon land claimed by others, even given ample room to do so (West Morocco, Gao, Algeria). The Empire thus stretches west to the desert of Sahara, across the barren wastes of Niger, south to the great plans bordering lake Tchad and further on to the forever peaceful lands of Darfur. Any accusations that Sultan Murad V purposely picked large, yet underpopulated/average-at-best colonies in order to make the Ottoman Empire appear larger on the map, while attracting little global interest, are OBVIOUS LIES. Should such words be uttered by an Ottoman subject will result in 10 years of glorious labor in the new colonies. Below is a picture of the most trustworthy* Bey Chad, a local muslim soldier, who was born in a little village near the lake Tchad, who assumed administration of the new colonial region from which he derived his new name (a name change the Sultan insisted on, if he was to assume office. The Sultan didn't have a hard time pronouncing his old name, he just found it amusing.). ![]() [size0]"Chad" considered turning down the offer, but the position came with a swaggalicious dress uniform that no man could resist. [size0]* ((This is purely a work of fiction. In real life you should never trust a State, Lake, Person or indeed ANYTHING or ANYONE named "Chad".)) [size0]((No, seriously, this is a portrait of an African Ottoman Soldier, a so-called Bashi-bazouk. Essentially irregular soldiers that lived off loot and mostly composed Albanians... I think there's a politically incorrect joke there to be made about the modern day armed forces of Albania, but I'm not going there.)) Democratization. One step at a time The Ottoman Empire is now officially more democratic.. In the sense that you don't have to be landed in order to vote as long as you're fabulously rich and the Sultan likes you. The harassment of minority parties has been replaced with electorate maps that would make even modern day American congressmen blush with envy. ![]() [size0]And they are not lightweights in the matter of gerrymandering. Industrial development, or lack thereof Despite the rapid spread of literacy, the industry of the Ottoman Empire is still quite far behind. therefore the current priority of the increase overall industrial development with a focus on increasing production of Artillery, Steamers and other Heavy/War industry. If we have to accept the mantle of Great Power, we should at least carry bigger boom sticks, after all. |

Imperial Newsletter Politics Major movements have been made made in the Ottoman Empire in the last few years. While universal suffrage has still not been accomplished, an alliance between the liberal and socialist parties have been made in order to compete with the conservative and reactionary elements. In exchange for supporting the passing of multiple liberal reforms, the militaristic offshot from the socialist Osmanli Aheli Firkansi party, the so-called Osmanli Köylü ve Amale Firkansi party (OKAF), received support in forming the basis of government. ![]() [size0]Yeah, 2x +20% socialist events actually helped me make liberal reforms The OKAF supports the increasingly popular conception of "Ottomanism" - that every citizen of the empire is equal, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. Hence, a swift dismantling of the former millet system is rapidly underway. As another curious result of the change in attitude towards the non-Turkish minorities, many minorities, such as Greek capitalists in Istanbul, now hold a major sway in the voting process. ((Greeks actually did made up most of the independent business owners in Istanbul at the time)) ![]() [size0]Celebration of the new Ottoman constitution. If you look a bit to the left, you can see two men showing progressive affection. [size0] The war of South German Patrimony Spurred by talks with the Austrian ambassadors of how the policies of the German Empire, the nation which was said to unify the many peoples of Germany, did not even allow their southern cultural kin, known collectively as South Germans, the right to vote. The Ottoman government, in part because of the own support for Full Citizenship, urged Sultan Murad V and his advisers towards intervention in the conflict on the side of the Austrians as the future rulers of all South Germans. This, along with the commitment shown by Austria, who had themselves given up vasts tracts of land in order to gain Russian support, did sway the Sultan's heart and sealed the support for our otherwise defensive oriented allies. ![]() The result of the war was however not in our favor. Unexpected and wide European support for the German war effort meant that trading equal numbers in combat simply wasn't sufficient - and as a result the populous region of Bohemia was lost to the German Empire. While the Sultan does acknowledge that perhaps the war was ill-advised, he considers not only the the loss of lives, but also the costs for the Austrians to both Germany and Russia to have been excessive. Athens In the wake of the defeat in the War of South German Patrimony, the Murad V sought to display that the empire was not in any way in decline. To make an example, he turned on the new Kingdom of Greece and its ailing finances. The great city of Athens, historical heart of many ancient Hellenic kingdoms, was declining alongside the rest of the tiny, breakaway state. ![]() [size0]Athens circa 1810. The new state had failed to thrive and expand in the late 1800's and remained a quiet backwater at the time of the new invasion. [size0] With the new policy of Ottomanism and British understanding for the need for new management in the area, support for a military campaign to secure dominion over Athens was no issue at all. A swift victory was scored and the forces of the Greek Kingdom was pushed far back into the Peloponnese and decimated within weeks. It is said that most Greek soldiers surrendered on the spot, as they realized that greatness was to be found inside the caress of the Empire - or even joined their brothers in the Ottoman armies. Demographics of 1883 Population: 52.394 million Land area: I'm not even going to try calculating it. Imperial Newsletter Bankruptcy As the other Great Powers had kept demanding room for their own Egyptian expedition, Sultan Murad V ordered an archeologist of his own to conduct a survey. It was not a costly affair, merely 50.000£eq. However, since the treasure had recently been emptied in the expansion of half of the empire's naval facilities, he saw necessary to ask for a small immediate loan from the Archeologist society, which was happily granted. It was not long after that the Grand Vizier informed him that, while secularized, the laws of the Ottoman Empire do in fact forbid the formation of a national debt. Whenever it does in fact to into debt, it is technically pawning off valuables and buying them back at slightly increased prices. By it's own laws, the Ottoman Empire went bankrupt on overspending a month's worth of income. ![]() [size0]And our only price was a monumental sculpture that won't stop asking pretentious riddles. The war We received no warning, no attempts at diplomacy, just a short notice of war, followed by enemy troops throwing themselves into the pits of hell and forcing us to follow them there. While we can claim no great victory that was not followed by an equal defeat on land, the sinking of the French Navy in the Bosporus and the following break of the French blockade, shall enter into the annuals of our history. ![]() As the losses in the war instigated by France, Italy and Germany and later joined by the Spain passes million after million of young men, the Ottoman Empire remains mystified as to why these nations so readily have been sacrificing so many lives. Spain remains the greatest mystery of all, joining the war without a claim of their own - perhaps the ruling families of Spain wished for a chance to murder their most troublesome young in a way they thought would not result in scrutiny? We can only conclude that the real goals of nations such as Spain, Italy, France and Germany was not to claim these territories - for they never tried to negotiate for Lombardia and Venice - but in fact to destroy any nations in the east in the hope to rule the remaining ruins of Europe. This perception is further empowered by the initial demands that we should demobilize and not arm ourselves to defend against any desperate rebels that may take up arms in the wake of a possible defeat and tear our Empire asunder. As we cannot accept such methods, we shall seek no quarter and will diplomatically oppose any any nations who supported this monstrous war. If we are to lose Tunis, we shall seek ten-fold vengeance and the army that arises from the ashes of this defeat shall make those who sought to destroy us regret it. ![]() [size0]When asked what battle the Ottoman Soldiers in the painting were charging into, the artist shrugged. Having watched hundreds, they all started to look the same to him.

Imperial Newsletter Ottomanism In recent years, the success of the policy of Ottomanism (give everyone a vote, talk about multicultural progress, watch as everyone becomes proficient in Turkish while increasingly ignoring their mother culture) has become apparent as the number of self-professed Turks the Empire has exceeded 1/3 (37%) for the first time in recent times, despite the recent expansion. Rise of the refineries The (very bloody delayed) invention of cracking in the early 1880's paved the way for the rapid spread of refineries across the Empire. There is now not a single region without its own refinery. Because it is believed that there are vast oil reserves in the Arabian underground, it is expected that the Ottoman Empire will become the top producer of fuel by the 1930's. Any spread of rumors that these majestic facilities are "Polluting, ill-smelling and dangerous wrecks of the modern age which threatens the environment" are subject to incarceration and forced labor in said oil refineries (to learn how clean they really are!) ![]() [size0]Not an uncommon sight in the modern Ottoman territories. A new, modern navy The spread of refineries has also allowed the previously rusty and outdated Ottoman Navy to be replaced by a new fleet of Battleships and Cruisers, ready and capable of crossing cannons with any nation in Europe, should the need arise. ![]() [size0]Sailors aboard the Ottoman flagship, Turgut Reis, commissioned, built and launched in the Ottoman Empire, unlike it's real historical counterpart The sultan's faltering health After 36 years on the throne, Sultan Murad V has recently been ill of health. Imperial Newsletter - Return of Tunis Rejoicing in the streets of Istanbul and the city of Tunis itself as the region of Tunis was returned to Ottoman hands, so that it could once again be suppr.. ruled in the tried and true Turkish way, rather than the foreign and inferior French way. The benevolence shown by the Austrian Empire shall not be forgotten. ![]() [size0]Tunisian celebrations are a subdued and frankly, rather drab affair. - Regency The passing of Murad V before his grandson Osman Faud (b. 1895, to be titled Osman IV) could become of age has required the honorable Grand Vizier Iznogoud Pasha to assume the responsibilities as regent. He can often be seen strolling the courtyard or the imperial harem cackling manically and plotting his next ill-fated ploy with his loyal assistant to become the Caliph instead of the Caliph. Rumors that the Ottoman government is active trying to get depose of the house of Osman by this method is countered by the fact that the Regent is not very good at neither assassinations nor his actual job. ![]() [size0]The Grand Vizier (left) here seen instructing the Minister of Ships on how to uncover the secrets of oil-driven battleships.
