Just seen an advert on telly which has inspired me to save energy. Since all of us use computers we probabily use a lot of power altogether. I thought we could ALL help save power by basically switching off our pc's when we're not using them. I must admit i have been guilty of leaving the PC on when downloading something but if we only have the PC switched on when we are actually using it and simply allow downloads to continue ONLY when we are actually online then we could save a lot of power. Also, if you are going to be away from the computer please switch off your monitor, even if your just going for a quick shit because i bet all those quick shits you go for add up into hours or even days worths of shits :cheeky1: .

You can even set your computer up to save power. An article that tells you how to do this is located here.

If you are halfway through some work and don't wanna have to switch your pc back on later and load all the work back up (which can be an arse if you have loads of windows and loads of websites and loads of work on screen) just hibernate the pc instead which means that the next time you switch it on your screen will be IDENTICAL to when you switched it off. I'm not sure if this is possible in any other version of windows except XP/2000 but it probabily is.

You could take power-saving to the extreme and begin removing hardware from inside your PC but that might be a bit too much :cheeky1: . I have, however removed a SCSI card from inside my PC as well as a network adapter.

Also to save power you can switch off hardware your not using for example, whenyour not on the internet, unplug your modem. When your not printing, switch off your printer. When you don't need sound, switch off your speakers.

Of course i don't expect anyone to follow this religiously (i know i won't) but i'm sure we could all save some power (and money) if everyone just did the little things mentioned here.

I'm with you, I won't follow it too religiousy but I will certainly ensure that the computer's off if i'm not using it and not downloading anything important at the same time, and I'll sure as hell remember to turn my monitor off whenever i'm away from the comp.
I will always be proud of but never fully satisfied with my CD Collection. I also have a Video Games Collection

Excellent!!

Heres a trade secret...

If you put your monitor on stand-by it is almost not using ANY power. The amount of power used is negligable and does'nt register on measuring instruments. If you put your monitor on standby, not only does it save power but it also increases the life of your monitor.
