I Need Button Help.

I've tried to solve this problem myself, but I can't find a solution. It seems to be a routine procedure, though.
I have a button instance on the stage, and I am trying to link it to a url, so I am using the following script:
on (release) {
getURL ("http://www.skunksoft.com", "_blank");
}
When I test the movie, the following script error occurs:
...Mouse events are permitted only for button instances.
This seems odd to me, because I am working with a button instance. Please, someone tell me where I'm being dumb.
This is Flash 5, by the way.

Stupid Question: I'm assuming you've got this script on a button?

If so, paste this code instead of the code you're using.
Code:

on(release){
getURL("http://www.skunksoft.com");
}

actually, the problem you may be having might have nothing to do with what the code is, but rather where you've put it.

When you write actionscript, you must attach it to the INSTANCE of the object, ie the button when it has the blue box around it. Make sure you haven't put the code inside the actual button itsself, or else your toilet's flushing in reverse.

My code is on the instance of the button on the stage. This is why I can't understand why it isn't working. The only other thing I can tell you that might have to do with my problem, is that the button I created contains graphic-type symbols. Could this be my problem? I'm so confused.
~Edit~
This is so weird. To test my theory that my problem may be that my button contains graphic symbols, I made a new button that did not have any graphic symbols, and flash wouldn't even let me put an action on it. And yes, I tried to place the action on the button instance on the stage.
So next, I opened up flash mx, and tried my same code, and it worked perfectly. Am I going crazy? :worry:

So I assume you've got it working fine? In MX, you can save to Flash 5, so try that and open it up in 5. If it doesn't work, I'll take a look at your fla (if you don't mind sending it too me).

You know, I'm starting to think that I should just switch over to MX. My entire flash file is acting completely buggy now. I can't delete the action off of the button frame, and on the new button that I created, I cannot create a new action. When I open the same file in mx, these problems vanish. I think I will just ditch v5. Thank you for the help.

Sounds like bugs to me :o
So, as I constantly say to my friend Bernard Derriman (who uses Flash 4!): "Quit livin in the past!"

:bing:
Use Flash MX... better yet, FlashMX2004
