first of all, i would like to thank you for your help with importing .swfs into my movie to use a motion guide on them. (lifesaver), and say kudos for being such a great guy, helping everyone out, and supplying a great place for flash (and other) artists to share. now for my question... (drumroll) how do you do it? in the sense that you are able to spend countless hours on a project....and FINISH them!!! do you work linearly, start to finish....or do you work on individual pieces and combine them at the end. or even.....multiple projects at the same time? i have so many great ideas, and i BELIEVE my skill is progressing to the point i can pull a few of them off.....but the patience....is a virtue i find myself lacking in. SEVERELY lacking. any advice on sticking with an animation and resisting the temptation to rip out my monitor and throw it off my balcony when i spend seven hours on a scene that ends up on the cutting room floor? <_< thanks! ^ d |

yep.. it's just plain old 'stick-to-it'edness... (if that's a word). When I start a new movie, I'll usually do a number of things.. first: turn off all IM clients (MSN ICQ etc.) second: install a really good action game that has multiplayer (usually first-person shooter like UT2004), third: create a loose schedule to follow. Nothing too precise, cos you're railroading yourself otherwise. fourth: buy a couple of new CDs and make sure I have lots of good music fifth: put my arse in the chair and work as much as I can. The first point is the most important I think.. people always say to me 'I never see you online'. It's because if you did see me online all the time, I'd never get anything done (or my movies would simply take much longer to make). The members of this forum can back me up here, cos when I was making Prowlies, I was hardly ever here. Now that I've started the new movie, you'll see less and less of me over the next few months you're probably asking why I'd install a good action game that has multiplayer. Because this is the type of game you can play really hard for half an hour and just leave. Sure it's fun, but a game in which you die a lot is much easier to leave. In this type of game, especially in online multiplayer, you have an average lifespan of less than a minute, so each time you die you have a good excuse to leave the game. When I've worked really hard for a few hours (sometimes a whole day) on some animation, I find half an hour or even up to two hours in a game the perfect way to unwind and regenerate, ready for more animation. That's why gaming is essential for me ![]() Being inspired overrides the need to learn patience too... if you're really excited about what you're doing, then patience is not an issue. That's why Brackenwood003 didn't get finished... it was uninspiring and I couldn't find the energy or willpower to work on it. When the idea for Prowlies (Brackenwood004) came along, I shelved 003 and worked on 004 non-stop cos I was excited about it. btw NOOB, your sig looks like you're flaming... maybe you should edit it so new visitors don't think you're an ass

That's good advice about the AIM/YIM/MSN clients Adam. I was just saying last night how I have to start making more time for ME. Everyone's always IMing me with, "how do you do this?"... and "can you help me write this?" ... and "check this out... what do you think" ... and then just a bunch of silly stuff that's all wasted time for my personal advancement. I usually post on my forum that I'm going into hibernation mode for a couple weeks when I can't take it anymore. I think it's one of those times. Good luck with the new Brackenwood animation! I'm sure it will be uber-awesome

Few recommendations of mine. 1) If you have windows xp, make a new user account called animation or what ever you want, and restric access to anything that would distract you. 2) Taking time to make up a basic plot and maybe even storyboards will help prevent writers (animators?) block. 3) go to http://www.littlehummingbird.com and get the program rest bitz. It tells you to get up and stretch at set intervals. So important if you are working on a long project you get stiff and cramped. This should help that. |

The Animator's Survival Kit says to unplug yourself from all music. The whole game thing is a good idea, though. we all know of those cursed animation 'highs' and 'lows'. While were talking about this I might as well throw in my 2 cents. I think the key to completing an animation is before you start, to tell yourself, 'I'm going to make a great animation, and I'm gonna finish it, but I'm not gonna finish it in one day.' Thats what always got me. After a day I felt the inspiration had lost its luster. It was like a subconcious contest going on in my mind: 'Hmm...let's see if I can make a quality anim in one day, and if I can't, I'll just start a new one tomorrow!' You can see while this method totally flopped...as to this day I don't have a fully animated movie worthy of submitting to a portal. I've been animating for almost 3 months, and what do I have to show for it? A bunch of tests?! *Sigh*

Hey, where did you get that pic? I agree a little with the no music, but sometimes you can really get moving with music. I find sometimes it's hard to THINK of new ideas when listening to music, but if you have it all scripted out.. music shouldn't be too bad. |

I think I'd go insane without music
I'm guessing Richard Williams works best without music cos he is from the old school of animators, i.e. he found his feet in animation and developed a way of working long before portable music was invented.. When I got the job at Disney they told me, "congratulations you got the job, turn up for work on July 13, bring a coffee mug and a Walkman". Nowadays, a full stereo system on the animator's desk and a good pair of headphones is standard in any animation studio. I guess it comes down to how you feel comfortable working. Besides, if I didn't have music to listen to at work, I'd be listening to the constant droning conversations of the fools in other cubicles (sometimes you can hear them whether you got headphones or not). At home here when I'm working, if I didn't have music, I'd hear nothing but the fucking neighbours outside the window (in that pic)

That's the only part of the Animator's Survival Kit I 'hmmm'd' at. Glad to see it's also the only part of the book that's not gospel truth.

Ain't it the truth.. I can't stand people going on and on about their crappy weekend or day. And the stories.. uhg.. shut up and work already. So what kind of music do you like to listen to while animating? Personally I listen to hip hop, rock, blues, and um.. soundtracks. Sometimes lyrics will distract me though, but I can tune them out if it's something I've listened to before. I need to find some more instrumental music to check out though. I have a few things, but nothing spectacular. The Cirque De Solei (sp?) cds are good. |

My god, if i was'nt listening to my Game Music 24/7, i'd never do anything at all!
Instrumental music is the best for inspiration, as is game music, as game music is designed to involk an emotion anyway
