Tips? Well observe, observe, observe.

But, let me think of a practical drawing tip. Okay, here's one, keep it as light and as loose as for as long as possible. For me, it helps me get comfortable with the space on the page and "think" before I draw. That's not to say be anal and plan every line, but rather don't over commit.

When I first started drawing, I'd start with an eye, go straight to details, and it would it up out of proportion or off the page. Keeping it light and loose lets you freely explore the composition, try different things, but keeps you "aware" of your space.

In effect, I believe it makes my drawings more lively and organic, which is a look I prefer. Others may prefer a more defined or mechanical style and that's cool. I've just never been into machinery much nor the "tech" look.

I hope this makes sense. I'm not a teacher. :bing:

If you have specific topics you'd like me to address, like how to render certain kinds of materials, what kinds of tools to use, mediums, etc. Let me know, I'd be happy to share whatever I know (which ain't much :bing: ).

First set aside about a year, because with all those details, you'll go blind doing frame by frame. :bing:

lol, humbleego! Good one... but I beg to differ. Well, not really ('cause I see your point) but fbf isn't all that difficult if you cheat and let Flash's tweens help you create the individual keyframes. But...

.. .that's a topic for a heated debate in another thread, ain't it? :P

It's weird that although I've been too busy lately to keep up with all that's been going on here (unexpectedly I might add) it's this thread that I try to check in on the most! Seeing everyone's artwork kinda drives me. For awhile I was doing drawings specifically for this thread and it bummed me that I couldn't find the time to draw anything for it.

Then it dawned on me... it's not about creating content for the sketch thread, it's about posting whatever is in the ol' sketchbook. The idea is to promote active sketching no matter what! If you're serious about your craft then you should be sketching daily at a minimum. Even if it's crap and you're blocked, or whatever. DRAW!!!

I got a sketchpad and some cool pencils (Staedtler Art Nr 118) for Christmas so gimme a sec while I scan yesterdays doodles . . .

Well, not really ('cause I see your point) but fbf isn't all that difficult if you cheat and let Flash's tweens help you create the individual keyframes.

The problem with shape tweening (if I'm understanding what you're refering to, MiG), is that it tweens between points, it's not advanced enough to understand what lines are going to where, etc. Even if you drew that that guy with the brush tool, then drew another "exact copy" on a later frame and tried to shape tween, the likelihood of it not going bonkers when it tweens is slim.

Shape tweening does well though if you're just moving points of the original artwork without adding new ones (clouds, amoebas, stylized water, etc.). But, then we might as well do FBF with that guy, because adjusting points for something that intricate would put you in the looney bin.

But, if you were to take on animating him, I'd say your best bet is combining a marionette or cut out style with FBF (when necessary, ie - he does a 180 or something).

Either way, good luck and may the aniomation dieties guide your pencil. :bing:

BTW, MiG, i dig the doodles....

Man, I talk alot...

humbleego! what did you use to make that troll looking thing? did you use like a faded water color effect?

Sketched all with a basic brush in Photoshop. I sketched lightly with a 3 pixel hard edged brush(the picture has since been scaled down). Then went up to 4 px and worked darker, then did a quick "wash" with a larger px (probably about a 20-30 px) soft edge brush at about 40-50% opacity for the shading.

All said and done, it was about 20 - 30 minutes worth of work. Gotta love the Photoshop! Maybe for the my next one I use Corel Painter, that program is multi-orgasmic.

Look pretty good, especially for a mere 15. :bing: Like the way you've done your crosshatching, though you might consider lightening or losing that black around the figure. I'm guessing you did it to bring focus to the figure, but I think it's having the opposite effect for me. It takes away from that great line work you did. But, the shading in the figure works well, I think.
