Hey, Comlock:![]() Excuse the scan, my sketchbook is too big to get flat on the scanning bed. These are gesture drawings, 10-20 seconds each, of someone in motion. I have about 50 more pages full of these. Sure they're not pretty, but my animation professor insists that this is the fastest way to improve animation. And quite honestly, I've only been doing this at such an intense level for only a few weeks and I'm already spotting improvement. I think this would be especially useful for you since one of your weak points is posing (granted, in a body of work and art style that is already very strong). I'm very impressed with your progress, Arthur. Keep at it.

Not just your comp, Cole. Mine too, and I know Comlock had an issue with it a few pages back. Nice examples, Aghenfil. I'm finally taking an art class that is actually good (so I'm studying figure and not just painting from instruction sheets), and I know we're going to start doing gesture drawings soon. Towards the end of the lessons, we're expected to watch a basketball game and draw the poses of the players in action. Keep up the good work everyone. That picture cracked me up, psybola. |

Thats awesome Ang! Did you use references for this, or do you just draw them straight out of your imagination? Thats also what I need to work on. You can see the whole atitude, volum and something something (I dont have words for everything in english) with such few lines. I cant seem to feel the whole character after I draw in more detailed lines. Thats it. Im going to buy some drawing paper.. thanks for the tip Noob ^^ - |

I've had the problem with quite a few threads actually. Whenever someone makes the first post in a new page it dosn't show up until someone makes the second post. Good stuff Anghen, if you can do those 10-20 seconds each, that's pretty damn impressive! I'm sure NOOB! will be impressed with your works on anatomy, isn't that reward in itself?

References, but since these people are in constant motion, they were my impression of the action -- as in, I take a mental "snapshot" of them (I kinda let my eyes go out of focus so I can see all of their limbs at once) and draw from that. This is why studying anatomy on the side is important, because if you forget what position some part of their body was in, you can infer it just with the way that the body is put together. Get yourself a really good deep-tissue anatomy book; I recommend "Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer. Grey's Anatomy is also good, but less useful for an artist. "Bridgeman's Drawing Complete Guide to Drawing from Life" is good, not because it does a lot of precise anatomy, but because he really divides and visualises the body in interlocking segments, which is good for gesture. Doing stuff from movies and television is okay for these, but live is best. Also try to get some animals too, but spend a few minutes looking at them to get their anatomy. Most importantly, stay loose and fast. It doesn't matter if they look good or not, and definitely do NOT erase anything. Keep pushing forward and keep doing it. It usually takes me about four or five pages of this a session before I start to feel comfortable doing it, so I'm always doing at least ten. Lastly, this is just my method and what my professors recommend. I'm sure there's different ways of doing this too. Good luck. |

thats some great advice anghenfil thanks. i never had the opportunity to do life studying classes (cuz i went to an all boys school, the idea of a naked woman posing in art class was enuf to make boys get an erection so bad that they wud faint) so i think this is a great opportunity to study gestures and movement. i was always really disappointed not doing life classes, cuz it does seem to play a huge part in animation and drawing in general, so i think i might give this a shot too. thanks again for the idea. |

![]() heh.. pardon the fanart. Ang, wot a great idea. I mean... as if it was yours but thanks for posting it and your 20 sec knock-offs are amazing! I guess you could use the same concept whilst sitting in a mall or watching one of those exercise shows. The idea of quickly sketching like that would really help gain fluidity in drawing and make drawing different poses a second nature, like drawing it without thinking about it. Bussman, those figures are great! Nice. Yours too RK, but the taco really broke me up! LoL Chungus. MiG |
