Hey cole, remember that body types come in all sizes and shapes... maybe you can have one really short, or well-groomed and prissy, or with a fat beer gut. All of your cats so far are just variations on lanky and scruffy. Variety, pweese. :o

By himself though, he looks pretty good. Very tough. And DW, I think the thing on his right arm is a bandage.

Yeah, play around with his bodyshapes more. Maybe give him some distinctive features.

Great stuff guys!

This isn't really a sketch, but it's the last thing I drew. At work they had me do the "holiday card". So here it be.

Monet called; he wants his sweet-ass lighting back. Ballpark, how long did that take? :gasp:

Hey Humble, as my lighting positively sucks and makes the angels weep, can you recommend some books or tuts that could help me along? Obviously the best thing would be to get back into detailed life drawing (And I intend to do this next quarter when I can actually sleep again), so any book or tut would just be supplemental to real practice.

Mostly I look at life, photos and other artists. You mentioned Monet, I think he single-handedly changed the way I look and paint light and color, and I don't really like his work! But, you can't deny the genius of it.

I think I'd mostly suggest looking at others work. I've always found it difficult to get a technique or effect on my own. It's usually like, "Holee shit! All he did was put some light teal there and it changed the whole piece!"

Like this piece by Matisse. The colors are so wack, but they work so well. I haven't figured it out yet. I struggle with color a great deal, partly because I'm color blind.

Another suggestion is speed painting. I've been doing some of that lately, just grab a compelling photo and spend 20-30 minutes painting it. Because of the time crunch, you worry less on details and more about the image as a whole. This for me means focusing on color and light.

For example, check the progression on this card:

The middle one illustrates my point more, it's basically a speed painting.

Notice I didn't focus on one area or person, I worked it all over, bringing the entire piece slowly up. The above image is far from complete, but in a sense it's done. It's got the spacial and color relationships worked out, the lighting is pretty much there, the rest is details.

I'm trying to develope this practice myself and it's freaking hard to do, since my tendancy is to get all up in details straight out the gate. But, I think forcing youself to keep the entire image in mind at all times, lets you make the most of it. You're less likely to overwork an area and neglect another.

[/diatribe]

Sorry, rambled a bit, hope that helps at least a little though.

Yeah, he's impossible for me to draw. I've been struggling from the get go. Thankfully, everyone else here has the same problem.

The thing that bothers me is that I color quite a bit more shittily than you, and yet I see color just fine. :P It doesn't help that my Dad is red/green color blind, so any picture that I use a lot of either color in in inevitably gets the comment, "Damn, that's kinda ugly and bland. Put some blue or yellow in that." The shame... :yfok:

Thaaaank you for taking all that time to post that. I'll take speed painting into mind. You are the light, the way, the Alpha and the Omega. May you blow our artistic demons to tiny bits, in thy mercy. Amen.

Light Tutorial <-- This is a tut I found on lighting from the CG talk website (I think...). It really breaks the concepts down and helped me understand the real fundamentals of lighting that I was missing.

Part of the problem with my stuff is not that I couldn't potentially paint/draw lighting, but it's the fact that I have very little intuitve sense on how it behaves and alters the look of surfaces. Guess it's time to go hunting for high-res monet paintings again.

Thanks again, Dave. :)

Actually 60%... then a 30% or 10% occasionally to mix colors...

No fancy custom brush, that you're right on. Just standard, oval shaped, tilted, spacing as big as can be with out looking shit and a slight size change depending on pressure...

Basically, if you have the spacing too small, it lags on a high res image, especially a large brush, so I try to find a balance between looking good and not waiting 5 seconds for every stroke to refresh... ;)
