Youve chosen a very hard cartoon character drawing to copy.
Maby you could start copying something easier?
Ive just started drawing those warnerbrother characters becasue they are easier to draw. I didnt even manage to draw bugs Bunny yet. And this is many levels beyond that.

Lots of proportions are wrong. I dont know if you make a quick construction drawing to beginwith and continue from there on. It makes it easier to have the control of the whole character pose and proportions as you draw. I also like do sketch in a centerline trough the whole body and face. I do this with all my characters (But they are drawn very vaigly)

heres some quick examples (I know its horrible, but im just trying to point out what I mean. I drew the constructionlines harder to make it show better)
You start by using simple shapes. And maby use centerlines to give it a more 3d feel while youre working..

And the captain america sketch:

You see? Its too hard!
Thats it. Im ending this "tutorial" right now.
*hides behind a brackenwood bush for a while*

Just start with something easier to begin with if you want to copy a character. Thats my advice

you don't have to start with easier things.u just gotta be prepared to study, human anatomy and proportions are a whole new era of pain and suffering.

even the proportions are off in coms example *captain america*

the proportions looks off in the actual reference image too *but thats probably cos the artists had a deadline*

its definatly not a good idea to draw from comics to learn anatomy and proportions, because these are usually exaggerated anyway,i've seen muscles in comics that don't even exist.

I shall repeat again LIFE DRAWING, ;) u shudn't start exaggerating things *especially anatomy* until u have basic knowledge of where things go.

this is what anatomy books and figure drawing classes are for, they don't teach u how to draw, more how to understand, the drawing and style should come naturally.

thats not to say u can't copy for practice though, just understand whatcha drawing.

(waits to get ignored yet again)

NOOB: Or lifedrawings. Your absolutly right NOOB. Lifedrawings are actually alot easier to make than that captain planet drawing you posted. Atleast I think so

Shit, not again... Just to warn you Esp, I haven't slept in three days and I get the itch to kill things when that happens.

That Captain America drawing looks okay for what it is, but the muscles are all hyper-exaggerated. It's a style device that I despise, but to each their own. It's definitely not something you should be trying to learn anatomy from, because they often add muscles to bulk out the figure.

In other words, Noob is right for once in his life. :P

Thanks Everyone for the Highly educational crits!! This is how it should be everytime with every piece!!!

Thanks again!

Also, I wasnt really going for an anatomy practice as much as a practice to be able to draw things the way I see them and show some correlation between them. I just now realized how hard it would be to re-create that (it was the pectoral muscles that were erging me so much).

I will definately practice some lifedrawings, (Thanks Nooooby, you know I love you, [in a non sexual way, ill leave that for Espen])

Dont think you wont see more from me; because there will be more, lol

Again, thanks everyone (i think this is the biggest crit-fest ive ever recieved, so thank you for that, you dont know what it means!

Whoa, 138 pages of this XD I think I'll just go with what's on this last page ;)

Comlock - your drawings are great! Especially your life drawing stuff, I've been teaching myself for two years and I just recently went into a life drawing class. I tell you, I knew I was stubborn, but I can't believe quite how much I'm resisting being able to draw figures without exaggerating them and using my own angular style :) Nice sense of weight in the characters as they're standing, too, and a good variety of poses :D

Bussman! :D Nice pencil work! My advice would be, even if you are using a reference, to ignore all those muscley details and concentrate on shapes. Try to define legs, arms, torso, etc with dynamic lines and shape rather than drawing in every detail :) I found I learned much more quickly that way than worrying about details ahead of the game.

Eeeh, since this is the sketch thread, I'll post one - 15mins, OpenCanvas1.1. Saved a little mucky because I forgot about the settings >.< Done a few days ago.

I'll get you, my pretties, and your little dog, too! ;) I was watching the Wizard of Oz, and Margaret Hamilton as the Witch - I swear you could rotascope her performance and you wouldn't need to exaggerate it at all to make it look like animation done from scratch - the shapes she makes are just awesome :D.

Er, sorry this is a bit pants, I'll do something better later on ;)

Just a development sketch for my re-design of Strait Jack. I'm aware there's problems with the anatomy, I'm concentrating more on the general look of SJ.

songspinner those are great! The last one's a little underwhelming after seeing the first two, but that's just because the first two are so awesome ^_^ I'm liking the redesign so far Ranoka, the straps hanging down from the sleevs works well, as does the large belt buckle.

nice work Commie lad, Bustyman and Benroka, I really love the concept thingy, Ran :)

my pc with the tablet broke down so I'm gonna be sketching a hell of alot more and i was wondering... I have a collection of George Bridgeman(sp?) books on anatomy and drapiery stuff like that, and its all brilliant for specific parts of the human body, but I'm having a little difficulty in drawing whole bodies, they always look out of proportion for some odd reason. So I thought I would ask if anyone has any advice on drawing figures (what to start with, how to build it up etc.)

his underarms are a bit to long, and his right one is longer than his left.
Both of his\her's upperarms doesent have the same size

The breasts should be more down and moved more to the left, when you look at the centerline on top of his\her body

But youre getting better. Keep practicing

aaaww do i have to,can't u just go buy some books.

lol.its not all just proportions...but..

The arms looks way to long *the one with the folded arms* the forearm is elongatified.

He has man titties.

You need work on foreshortening.

Your not constructing the head properly.Infact ur not constructing anything properly, your drawing a bunch of lines and hoping they will work,u have to spend time on every part of the construction, even the stick and shapes,or it will all just blow up,most rookies are too excited to get the muscles in that they rush the first stage.

I reccomend loomis for u too *figure drawing for all its worth*
