Hey guys, I've learned valuable lesson today.
See, I did these monkey sketches (retarded sketch, I know)... now, lately I've been looking allot into pencil rendering techniques because, I can light objects smoothly and correct, but it allways takes so f*cking long. When I'm just rendering quick and loose for rough sketches my shading looks muddy like hell. This is no exception, however I did find something out when scanning them into Photoshop...

This is the origninal image with a color pallete of 32 colors.

This is the image with 16 colors

I like the second one allot more.

You see, untill now, whenever I was shading something I allways wanted to have allot of range. I wanted to have shadows black, the highlights white and gray gradiations inbetween, now I realize that the search for a broad range of value was hurting the image more instead of helping it.

Keep your shadows simple, place the detail and hard edges into the lit part of the object and keep the shadow simple, an more flat. Don't try to get it black and varied from light to dark too much, just make sure the tone is dark enough - not too dark, just enough.

I'm gonna try to to silhouette out my shadows from now on and keep them more plain. Whilst we're on the subject, anoyone else wants to talk about pencil rendering?

One of them need huge-ass shades. And their bellbottoms must be bigger!

(Edit) Very quick sketch... Taking a break from my other work. This is a very very old character of mine, so the body design is showing its age:

Great sketch Ri=) Maby the eye looks kinda misplaced becasue it a bit wide and, and covers 50% of the head if you divide the head with a centerline. It's realy nothing much, I think your characters face looks cool with those wide eyes.
I tried to adjust the eye on a new sketch, I dont know if this makes it any better though

And I was thinking of giving the bick neck'd guy some big ass shades, but I was to lazy. I just had to drew something quick with afro on it^^

Great drawing Yoganimation=) I cant realy see any big flaws on it at the moment.

That's a REALLY nice sketch. I like the perspective and the forshortening (and the hair!), so overall, great work. :)

A few things to check:

1- Her arm MIGHT be too short... it's hard to tell because her body is torqued away from us and her shoulder is up. It's actually pretty close, though. Make it just a tad longer, methinks, because the elbow should just barely touch the top of the pelvis at rest.

2- Her torso is very long. Nothing wrong with that, supermodels tend to have long torsos, but a long torso is usually masculine. Check out my character; she has a female porportioned torso. (As a thought exercise, touch your pelvis and the bottom of your ribs. You might be surprised at how close together they are... maybe not. :P )

3- Her arm looks a bit awkwardly positioned... it seems as if her arm should be resting on her hip or something, not put across her body. Think about accentuating her existing major line of action.

I love Kong's left arm, by the way... Excellent rhythm there.

Thanks for the correction on my piece. I like to cheat her eyes in the side view, but I think Cel's right, I kinda overdid it. Oh well.
