There are six cross-cultural highly agreed upon facial expressions: Happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. Any other emotion is a mix of the the others and can highly depend on context.

If I were to guess what the expressions are conveying starting with the top and going clockwise, I'd say boredom, surprise (though his eyelids shouldn't be down), disgust, and embarassment. Once again, when you deviate from the six major expressions, you start getting into dicey territory, but there are some very key ways to convey subtle expression. Tell us what expressions they're supposed to be and we'll work on making them more readable. :)

you pretty much hit them on the nail there Ri, your right about the suprised one, the eyelids shouldnt be there, i guess i was just trying to stick with the original reference head that i just put em in everything

Thanx though, btw did u see the animatic? would you like be able to give me a little help, its at 30fps, and im wondering how i should animate the inbetweens, like on 2's or 3's or what?

Im still new at the whole, 'real' animating way, i usually just go straight thru, but i wanna start like this cuz it seems way benificial in the long run . . .

Two's should probably do it. The faces feel like they'd do well with very quick transition pose-to-pose animation (the kind Adam uses in his animation, such as when bitey turns and he just uses two drawings and tweens a bit).

Really, just jump into the animation and feel it out. It's a real sink-or-swim kind of ordeal in the beginning when you're learning, but I'm sure you'll be just fine.

(Edit: I prefer straight ahead animation myself, but pose to pose is vital for time-critical spots in the animation. Everyone has a preference, and as long as you end up with a good result, no one will care which one you did. Usually.)

(Edit2: Does Comlock, Nurbs, Humble, or Adam want to weigh in with their opinions? I'm sort of a crack-addict wannabe 2D animator, so my opinion is kind of moot).

i do that all the time in Math man, its so fun too, because a lot of the time you get lucky and someone is just sittin there like hand on their face and you can easily just sketch them real quick, its a great little source, lol

hey guys

I'm in a bit of an art-rut at the moment.
I'm producing stuff at a good enough rate, I'm just not producing things at the skill level I would like to be. I suppose every artist feels like this. But lately more than ever I've been feeling held back to my lack of formal training. I need to go to art school is basically what I'm saying. I'm hating sciences more and more by the minute.

Here's a finished version of my succubus. I adjusted the head size and the size of her arm which was a little too thin in the old version. I also added some shading and highlights to give her a bit more depth.

Here's an unfinised commission:

and here's the thing that has upset me the most in the past few days. I wanted to practice sketching environments and rocks, so I did up this sketch:
Posted Image

I then decided to push it even further and practice hand inking it. It... didn't turn out :( I ruined the original. Luckily I had scanned it before inking it. I printed off another copy...and as you can see, that one didn't turn out too great either. Not enough depth. I've put too much detailing into the mountains, making them appear closer than they should...that pole should be larger and I absolutely HATE the detailing on it.
Posted Image

so all in all... unsatisfied with myself :( one stinkin' image has frustrated me like nothing else possibly could.

I love this one! Though I think it might be easier to follow if one of the frames was flipped so the sumo guy was poining the same direction in both.

um·bra ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mbr)
n. pl. um·bras or um·brae (-br)
A dark area, especially the blackest part of a shadow from which all light is cut off. See Synonyms at shade.
Astronomy.
The completely dark portion of the shadow cast by the earth, moon, or other body during an eclipse.
The darkest region of a sunspot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Latin, shadow.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
umbral adj.

For both you and Neonakis: Kick-ass lighting tutorial. This is the only tut I've ever found that actually explains the behavior of light in an artistic way. Though it's unfinished, you'd both probably find it useful.

Creating depth with just outlines is really tough. I guess you could put thicker lines in the foreground and thinner/fainter ones in the back, but I think color will make all the difference for this picture. Try making the distant mountains a color very close to the sky, and darker as they sink into the rivine. The foreground should be less sky colored and more saturated.

Also, check out Comlock's paintings on his website. He's done a few deep-distance pictures and they're marvelous. Perhaps you will be inspired. :)

LOL! love it. So cute an innocent^^

Did you use some kind of perspective lines when you drew the landscape?
They dont need to be in perfect "ruler" lines. Just draw some vaige lines roughly freehand, or imagine them. It can also be fun to tilt the camera abit.

A quick random example. Not the best composition. There probably alot of better ways to place the camera than I did aswell...

Anghenfil: Yes, I think Arthur should draw more actionposes. I guess I havent drawn a single actionpose exept for the doodlecommunication, and for that character competition a long time ago. Not much. And thanx for the above comment=) (but what painting? =o )

I guess I should post theese consept paintings on the homepage. I almost forgot about the all the work I spent on this, and it ended up with nothing^^

Hahaha, you guys are so much better than me,i give up .I'm just working on a boring portrait, same ol' stuff. But it's a referance i've used before,i'm just really trying to work on shading and lighting.I'll post it when i'm done :P It looks like crap so far but i'm trying to work on weak points i have.

I like the differant versions of the landscape, they both look awesome to me.I wanna see other people's versions  And the Succubus turned out great :P

Bucks-that looks good,it has an eerie look,if that was intentional, than it's extra good

Here's my crap i was working on for a few evenings in my spare time.I spend too much time on something that looks no more unique than my other stuff.I was trying to learn how to shade those glossy kinda reflections in skin ;) but that wasn't referanced,i kinda made that up.I can't even tell in the scanned version. And the hair was made up.I was trying to stray away from making a picture out of lines and using more shading to define things. My referance was SUPER pale too so i kinda had to make up alot of it.

It's an old reference that i've used before

Excellent realism, as always. The hair is a bit stylized, but I think it works well enough.

For your next piece, I want you to do something super high-contrast; your stuff always tends to be light, and you ought to have something under your belt that allows some bredth. Push your shadows. Push 'til it hurts.

Arthur, the mini-Bitey is cute as a button. I kinda like it off-balance, I think it makes it dynamic. I'd bend the knee in contact in the ground a little bit more to show him pushing off.
