Anything you would like to say about your drawings?  What you've found to be difficult?  What's become easier over the years?  Any suggestions for people just getting into life drawing?

Well, I can say that both models posed challenges. The first was a very thin dancer type and thus certain poses looked almost unnatural with her jutting hip bones. She always had this sort of regal attitude she expressed with how she'd positon her head/neck. It was hard to capture (in most places I didn't). In both cases, it was difficult job to not overdo it (like I did in no. 3).

The other model had "non-classic" proportions, which normally I like, but posed some problems. Since people expect to see greek gods and goddess's, showing figures of different kinds tends to make people think they aren't "correct". This woman was rather thick from the waist down, but with rather small breasts. She was also a bit lumpy.

I normally try to just "draw what I see", but I found myself fibbing here and there for the sake of a cleaner line or more pleasant form. I did this with the first model too, adding weight a little here and there.

What's become easier over the years? Just drawing people. The more you draw from life the better you become at drawing from your head. You sort of collect poses and shapes in your head that you later recall for other work. So, the more you actually see the real thing the faster and better you are at drawing something from them mind.

Also, you stop thinking about it and you just do it. Unless there is an unusuall pose, I rarely have to think about what goes where because I've done it before. It becomes internalized. That lets you focus on the bigger picture/concept. It's just like writing, the more you do it, the better you are and then you stop thinking about how to spell something, you just think about the idea you wish to express. Same thing.

Also, on the note of drawing from photos, where I'm just as guilty as anyone. Photo references are very helpful, but they should never constitute all of your prectice. When you study something in the real world, you get a better sense of structure and volumes that is nearly impossible to get from photos. Also, when you draw from a photo, half the work is done for you. You don't half to translate 3D to 2D (as in life drawing), you're like a Xerox machine instead.

I'd suggest resorting to photos for things like color and lighting. Use life drawing to get a grasp of structure and form.

Anyway, my only real suggestion is to get out there and do it.

:bfoot:

BTW, thanks for the feedback Ang, spot on as usual.

PS: Zwickel, you should send that logo to NG, I like it more then their current one personally...

:P, it's the new NG logo actually, I just added some stuff to make a bg for my psp.
Dang Comlock, I love your style.

I got a question about Life Drawing (do you look at models and draw???) or is there a way to draw "life drawing" taking lessons and doing the drawings right from your head?

 Life drawing is exactly how it sounds... drawing from life, as in, what's right in front of you. You do life drawing so you can draw from your head more accurately.

Nice sketch Zhenmuron, the arms get lost in the body a bit though, try making the lines around the edge of the arm a bit thicker to help distinguish them :) Also I don't know anyone who stands with their hands facing behind them, and his arms look like they bend the wrong way.. :P

When you stand up and your arms are hanging by your side, their natural position is with the palms facing inwards towards your body, but yours appear to face in the direction behind him, rather than towards him; see how they bend?

Ah ok now I get what you mean, thx, il keep that in mind for next time.

Hehe ty :)

Great sketches Rubberhead, really like the shading. And I really get a feel of the purpose of the creature, seems like the huge thing you would have in the desert when camels cant do the job B). Im not really sure if im right on this or if im wrong, if so I appologise but shouldnt the right ear of the animal on the second picture be moved back a bit? Feels like the ears are in one perspective and the face area in another.

Rubber, I know you must have answered this hundreds of times. I think I even asked it before. But what kind of pencil do you use for your sketches?
And do a drawing tutorial! Gwar!

Thanks on the advice Arthur,I'm pretty new to trying to mess with light sources and stuff so i figured i'd start with a simple marble and work my way up to more complex lighting.

Zhenmuron-i like that pic.,the flowers stand out ALOT.If that's what you were getting across with the drawing well then ya get extra points.Either way it's cool. Are ya gonna give us a background?

Rubberhead-i love the shading on the muscles on the top pic,and the angle on the very bottom one alot. The head is kinda wierd though i noticed too,but it looks like you were focusing on the body and drew the head as an after thought cause ya figured people would be saying''were's the head'',now ya got people saying''what's up with that head'',sheesh ya just can't win  ,was i close?

EDIT-.........thepeve........hehe,nevermind,just .....well,you might want to explain that one before a mod. plucks that post, hehe  ......

I like where you're going with this alot, but I think the leg anatomy feels off. I was trying to think of the prehistoric creature this reminded me of, but the closest I could get was the modern tapir.

You'd have to deef up the legs, but hopefully the skeletal & muscular structure on this guy will help...

Great stuff though! :bfoot:

Actually I just use plain HB pencils, if it's regarding the color, I did that in the scanning application, beats the greys imo...
I know that there are sepia pencils, but I haven't found them in any local store.
I could ship them, but that's kinda stupid if you just want some pencils.
Tough I might consider doing it allong with a set of Prismacolour pencils/markers...

Jubjub These were quickies, especially the last one - bad excuse I know. I was thinking if the eyes wouldn't be visible and placed kinda deep. Then I just added some details to the neck and voila! An unreadble piece of crap! Shud have known better...

I'm also having the tendecy of starting to shade too early on - when the linedrawing is still imature. Makes it harder to spot errors and easier to make mistakes. Guess that's what I get from looking at this guy too much.
Believe he has a sketchbook on Conceptart too...
