Hey Nub, great start. Just fix the shading on his upper lip, it looks very flat. Also the side of the nose kinda seems to bend in, which is normal but it kinda pops out right now. Gives the impression the bottom is detatched... Looking pretty ace for the rest, maybe it would be cool if the lighting would be a tad more dramatic. Bitey smilie to look badass -->

wow, yoganim! i like it a lot... is that supposed to be water at the bottom? If it is, i think it would look better if you made it look more... watery, I guess... are you going to add more detail, or is that the basic, finished product? |

yog,in my honest opinion,i would move on to another painting, not cus your pic is bad,but the reference your using is pretty bad,its a tad overwhelming don't u agree? theres no clear definition on anything, foreground, midground, background. get sum reference that cleary defines the three. ............................. as for me, just more wip sketches of underpaintings that i will take further when i get time![]() ![]() |

Nooooooobian What process are do you using for that "self portrait". Looks like you did a gray scale and then color it? I seen a few blokes do that but never quite got why or exactly how. Do you just have another layer set to "Color" or what? |

its a traditonal technique, some call it the *dead layer* others the underpainting. its main purpose it to get your main tonal range/lightsource down before worrying about colour. after thats done, u can set your brushes blending option to color, but wheres the challenge in that? i personally don't do that but its up to the artist. You probably won't understand unless u have worked with oils traditionally.i try to keep digi-cheats to a minimum. u can read more on it here http://www.artpapa.com/oil-painting-lesson-1/index.html i still ain't finished the portrait, but heres a gif,see how i try to keep the tones and lighting as close to the underpainting as i can. ![]() |

Agreed. I've seen a few works that attempt that, but the colors always seem to lack the variance and richness that comes with actually painting them. Though that guy Rubber posted has some killer stuff. But, it looks like he may do "color blending mode" for one stage then tweaks the rest with "real" color. I'm still DLing though, looking forward to it. Thanks Rub and Noob...

ah yes,the video rubber linked was posted on conceptart.org forums a while ago,i watched it and his process really dissapoints me. he uses allot of *image-adjustments* stuff which is kinda just cheating lol,he paints all in grey and basically lets photoshop do the rest for him. but again,up to the artist. *i only watched the vampire one though* |
