Hey Arthur, I did a quickie redo of your dragon. Don't put your legs perpendicular to the ground, because that gives the impression that the figure is in balance -- and when a figure is in motion, they're out of balance.

Other little things... probably overdid the curviness of the wings, but they should look like they're being blown in the wind and catching air. Moved his head out so he has more silhouette value. Tried to improved the dynamicness of the tail. Tried to flex his fingers and toes a little bit more... yeah. Love the rendering on your version, though. :P

big EDIT: Okay I edited out the first 2 images cause they were... horrible. Anyway, I'm sketching faces. I just started looking into my anatomy book and I need practice. This is a fairly large image of something I've done. I'm having a hard time keeping the faces from getting squished and stretched mostly when I want to draw from angles. Like when I tilt the head back, the head looks squished down. Help?

Hey Boundless,

You made some big edits, as you say, while I was out whipping this up for you:

You are pushing forward and each drawing is better than the last. Good for you for just working away at it, Boundless. Drawing improvement can be like a batting average: some strike-outs, some hits. The over-all goal is to increase your average by going up to bat over and over, always looking for a little improvement. No-one goes from a strike-out king to a grand-slam hitter in one lesson. Pro players hope for a .300 batting average. If I made one drawing that worked on all the levels I know it should for every two that didn't I'd be a very, very happy artist (and on the cover of all the magazines, no doubt). So keep that in mind as you fill up sketchbook after sketchbook.

The changes I made were all done in PS where I could select and alter your existing elements wherever possible.

As you can see, they are mostly about keeping the features aligned according to their planes. While you are drawing the faces, try drawing a few simple skulls too, with brow ridges, cheekbones, jaws etc. They'll help you see the underlying structure which is what tells the flesh how and where to sit.

Keep up the good pencil work, too. I see you are trying to keep all your shading in one direction. That's a nice designerly expression, but it doesn't help you work the underlying form. Maybe try some contour lines, where your lines follow the forms and volumes of the features. And don't be afraid to bump up the contrast a bit, even if it's in PS once you have scanned (not photographed) it in. One over-all tone will flatten any shapes that you have worked so hard to create.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions. I'll look around for some contour line drawings and post 'em here later.

*edit
It's later:

Just some examples of exercises in following the structure with the lines. Good luck getting the portfolio together. Sounds like a busy night! :)

Wow, thanks kib. I wasn't really checking to make sure everything was aligned right, so that'll help a lot and I've been trying to work on understanding the underlying parts of the body. Contour lines are a good idea. I'm probably not taking enough time to plan everything out right... mostly cause I just found out I threw most of my sketches and artwork out so I need to make new stuff for a portfolio by tomorrow. It goes out in 2 weeks so maybe I can have an extra day or two. I need 15-20 pieces and it's killing me. :worry: Thanks again, I'll keep working at it.

Woo hoo, haha.Cool Rade er...Jonathan?I see ya put time into the shading of the gore but not the fur, that would help to make it all blend together better,it looks cool though, definately improving. But i always like monster pictures anyways.

Thanks jubjub. Maybe some more posts of my stuff when I think it's ready/useful/appropriate.

I'm working on a new animation and perhaps posting the WIP will keep me on it until completion.

And hey, mod!

Thanks for the 80s flashback. :D A good Canadian contribution to adolescence.
