Sweet. Nice one, Anghenfil. Felines seem to have thicker fur/skin where the arm muscles insert to the chest. This would obscure that curve area a bit once the fur is on the musculature, I imagine. Is that V-shape vs. single-curve one of those "make it look right" tweaks? I notice the drawing with the V-shape is much more anatomical while the one with the single curve looks like the anatomy is starting to be adjusted for animation. Who is Ken Hultgren? kib |

The V-shape is for muscle, the dish shape is for the skin-included look. The reason for this is that the pecs attach right in the center of the chest while the skin takes the path of lesser resistance and goes flush across. My point was that a lion's chest appears somewhat arc-like and doesn't have that "barrel" shape that Cole looks like he's going for. Most quadrapeds are quite sveltish in the chest area.
 Ken Hultgren is my absolute FAVORITE gesture drawing artist for animals. His horses in particular are absolutely amazing. He has a book and you people should all buy it.

Oh, THIS guy.![]() Yeah, I've seen that book around. An oldie but with really solid pics. He really has a beautiful, efficient style. Pretty cheap, too. Great resource, Anghenfil. Thanks. And doesn't your bio say that you are part "sveltish", too? kib |

Oi, Why you mixing hiragana and katakana in the name?
Bad Jem
Looking good. I can see where you're coming from, but I actually like the style of the simple one (third image down, bottom right). Very well drawn. Very nice job on the hair, too. |

And actually, Chobits is meant to be spelt like that. There's a reason given in the manga, but it's a spoiler.

Hehe,it's a crazy world NOOB.Fact is that Master Rade has become a master at drawing articulation see: ![]() You might want to save that for future referances NOOB  .I did,i named this one''DaVinci's lost sketches''. Sorry Jonathan,ya know i pick on ya cause i love ya,well...in a non-gay way, hahaha*awkward silence*I gotta admit though that i think that it's really cool that everyone here is comfortable enough to critique everyone's stuff,it really is helpful to know what your drawings look like to other people, even though at times you might not agree with the input. As far as Kib recommending How To Draw Manga books,i dunno,i suppose if that's the style you want then that would be a good source(i have one,my mom got me at one point, and i looked through it and....the drawings kinda sucked).I would recommend studying artists with more...realistic works, and once you're good at drawing well proportioned characters THEN build your own unique style on top of that.Just so ya know,i'm still learning how to draw characters anatomically and proportionatly(sry spelling)myself, once i get through that i'm sure a style will find me. Hope i didn't make anyone mad

What I despise about the "How to Draw Manga" series is that it is inheritly trying to conform the readership to a style. It's a little perturbing when half of the class draws the exact same way, but it's (pardonne mon francais) really fucking annoying when they're utterly unable to expand beyond the anime "boundary". I'll be the first to admit that there are one or two people in my year that have taken the style and made it theirs -- they use it in a way that is lucid and expansive, often very creative, and they frequently deviate from the anime norm if the need exists. But that's one or two out of, say, sixty. It's kind of depressing.
The general principles of the "How to Draw Manga" series are okay, but the artwork leaves a lot to be desired. If they're going to plug a style like this, they could at least have the decency to show drawings that are good instead of oppressively creepy and bad. [/rant] |

What people need to realize when drawing manga is that manga is soley a highly stylized version of realism. The best manga artists know this and have strong foundations in realism, most "nooby" manga artists try to hide their lack of knowledge in the style, and it shows. |

Thanks, this is almost exactly what I was grabbing at, but you said it much more precisely. Most people's styles are stylized realism -- some more than others. It's hard for me to think of a person who's native drawing style is completely diverged from reality (minimalists and pattern artists come to mind) or draws photographically (rare or non-existant). |

I agree with Anghenfil and Rubberhead.Don't fet me wrong i like to watch some anime and read some manga. But if you asked me who a certain artist was for a given picture i wouldn't be able to tell you because in general it all looks the same(some exceptions). |

![]() A sketch from "drawing Jam" I was struggling with. her head doesent fit the body I think, and there's something that doesent seem natural. I dont know, I looked myself blind on this and the "mirrored" version. And Ill throw in a little "guess who" sketch ![]() (Both faces = same person) |

That is quite baffling, indeed, Comlock!
First of all, it's a beautiful piece that you should be proud of. Here's what jumped out at me: I did a quick skellie sketch on her and it looks like the left trap doesn't quite line up with the base of her head right--- that or her face is too far forward. Forgive my poor job of butchering: ![]() ![]() Hope that helped. Oh-- and is it Jack Black? |

![]() This is the cover of the English version of the book I recommended for human body structure. Here are two pics from the interior. You can see that they are not teaching the manga/anime style, but proper proportion in perspective and underlying human musculature. (pics thumbnailed because of ©) ![]() ![]() And here's one from the clothing book: ![]() And one from the robot book: ![]() Anghenfil and Rubberhead are totally correct in saying that rampant over-use of the style as a short-cut to drawing is a scourge. Well, perhaps they didn't say that, but it's true. And it needs to be said. You should read that interview with Jon Kricfalusi about the stacks of applicant portfolios he has to go through when hiring someone or visiting a school. "Graffiti" and "anime" styles are the two things that make him throw out someone's application. It means, to paraphrase JK, that you probably can't draw structurally but can only mimic style. It's like all the kids in art school now who think they can do modern expressionist art without doing the work to learn how to draw. The teachers are just as guilty, too. *barely manages to contain off-topic rant* That said, I stand by my three recommendations in this book series. The rest of them I don't have and don't know about. Now let's see some more drawings. kib |

yeah, you're right akpaintslinger. thanx=) her face leaning to much forward compared to the back of her hair. I see it now. If I moved her face more backwards, her hand couldent tuch the face and the angle of the arms would then change alot compared to the reference pic if I did. And yes, That was supposed to be Jack Black =) |

Pirates are better then ninjas! Plus Have you ever had the idea that maybe im both mix into one. There is a vampire side of me and werewolf side of me. All mix up into one. I can choose to be any one of them. I have my vampire and werewolf sketches. Then there is my super never been seen both Vampire and Werewolf sketch. I would show you guys but you would all just complain Think about underworld if you must <_< (which will be nothing like my stuff) I could keep talking but why should I explain it. When you see it for your self. Just bear with me ok, please Once I have the first chapter of my storied done. Ill have it clean and polish.Ready for viewers here in Brackenwood only. Moving on after reading on wat every one has to say. Which was kinda, a lot  I have some examples and what I mean by before. ![]() As you can see I have two, not just one but two! Female sketches! Im aware that there are many things that are both wrong with them but it’s the pose that I like. It gives them a sort of Personality. If you havent guess it, one is a vampire the other is a werewolf. Dont forget to crit my work while your at it Just for fun I will have 5 more skecth's each contaning up to 4 different pose's. If you do know something about vampires and werewolfs. You can tell which would be a vampire or a werewolf. If yea can guess which one is so pose to be which and you only get one try. You will be allow to bother the hell out of me for updates and get to pick on me when ever you want, with my permission. 5 winners will be alerted if they had won and be given the first chapter of my Illustrated story with some chapter two as well. Collect them all and label which one is which, also im including the one just now. I decide to extend what I had all ready and rework on what Ive done so far. Felt bored so I wanted to make up some contest. To give me more of a reason to stay committed to my work, There is no dead line. Jubjub your like my big bro. That I never had. Ill be a master, just wait and see *sings* im on my quest to be number one1 |

i like the boobies.. I MEAN i like the posses they do make a personality for them but i dont see how we could guess whether one was a werewolf and one is a vampire but still its good well done And i guess that the one on the left is the vampire cos werewolves dont have cloths on. Also on the previous picture you posted (of the man turning into a werewolf) one crit that i have is to shorten his neck because it doesnt look normal lol. but i like it still. |
