Such efficient lines to create such beautiful volumes of hair on that girl sketch, Comlock. Really, really nice. And aren't airport boarding areas great for sketching? Everyone is sitting still, thinking and they have nowhere to go for an hour. Good to see you getting right back into your sketch/post routine after your vacation. Did you draw anything in Iceland? kib |

Walking through the city one day, I suddenly noticed that things seemed a little strange... (2 versions) ![]() Note: This does need some better colouring, but my attempt to do it ended in miserable failure... Learning how to paint digitally is definitely something to be worked on... |

I like your wonky perspective style, Esn. Very interesting and Eastern-European. You have enough volume detail in there that it would be fun to animate. As far as colouring goes, it may be worth limiting your palette to begin with. Maybe pick a neutral low-value green like 8F8C41. You could fill a layer with it in PS and then make a palette of progressively lighter and darker swatches and start pulling out the highlights and pushing in the shadows. Then you could make a warmer colour, like B2894D and start working different places that face the viewer. A limited palette forces you to see your pic in terms of value. When you start thinking of it that way, you can get a feel of the mood of the piece. The mood can lead you right to colour. It's all linked but can be a bit overwhelming when staring at a blank white canvas. Find a way to take those first steps and you'll be running in no time. kib |

Thanks for the feedback, kib. There's one thing that I'm really frustrated with so far in colouring - it may not even be possible, but just in case it is, could anyone help? The problem is this - is there any way to "fill" a shape without getting those jagged edges where the fill meets the pencil lines? You can see what I mean when you look at the first example above - the edges of the colour fills are very pixely. Is there any way to set it up so that the edges of the fill will be slightly blurred, so as to blend together nicely with the pencil lines? P.S. I don't own photoshop, but I do own GIMP... |

Ah, Esn, my friend. You are referring to the process of "ant-aliasing", which allows PS and other raster graphics apps to show nice soft gradient transitions on line art and keep text looking good when it's enlarged. It sure does make it hell to fill areas compared to vector graphics, doesn't it? Not having used Gimp (or a gimp, for that matter) I don't know how developed their tools are  . In PS when you use the Bucket fill you get a Tolerance setting (a number you enter) and an Anti-Alias check box. If there are equivalents in Gimp, try experimenting with them. The Tolerance numbers are like brackets () around the basic colour sample. By increasing the number you increase what the brackets go around and thereby what the fill covers. There must be something in Gimp that adresses this basic issue. Other options are to select an area with Magic Wand and (in PS) go to Select>Modify>Expand or Select>Grow to make the expansion bigger by a pixel or two. You can also copy a selection to another layer, invert the selection (Select>Inverse) and fill the whole area. Then move that layer below the original layer and set the original layer's blending options to Multiply. To simplify all this, start with a hard brush (one that has no fuzzy edges) or pencil. You can then increase the contrast to make a sharper definition of the line. Many pros do not use the bucket fill, but rather paint beneath the outlines on a new layer. Sorry this answer is so PS-specific, but that's what I know. I took a look at the Gimp website but couldn't come up with any definite answers. Sounds like you need to do some experimenting, and maybe consult a Gimp-specific message board. Careful when you are looking that up on Google. kib |

Thanks for the suggestions... all of those options are indeed there in GIMP and in paint.NET (I actually prefer to use Paint.NET, another free program, for most of my picture needs because the interface is nicer than Gimp's, although it's missing some more advanced functions). I guess I'll have to experiment a bit. I already tried tweaking the tolerance/anti-alias settings, but I didn't get anything that I liked. It would be nice if there were some kind of option for colour fills like "make this colour fill blurry on the edges for X number of pixels". That would solve all of my problems. But unfortunately there's not...
Perhaps there is an indirect way to achieve the same effect? Hmm.... *goes off to tinker*

If they are pushed that far back, the shoulder blades should be much closer together. That's probably what threw me off. |

Cool stuff, Bo.
There is a very unique, creative flow to your work that is very refreshing. I found myself staring at it-- (the bottom one), picking out the mechanics and detail for awhile. It's deeper than the first glance suggests! |

Ok, momentary burst of creative energy has expired. ![]() Some random robot guy. I was going for Agent Smith but got him instead. I like him. Hey whoa, png's are transparent?? Wierd. Well, I think you can still see everything. EDIT: Oh yeah, I was toying around with different positions for his right leg until finally drawing it twisted inward like that, why does it look more natural that way than when it's facing outward? |

First off, I like him too. Look at his torso, particularly his right arm. The way you've set it up, it makes his body appear to be facing left, while his head is turned and looking right. When you face his left foot (right side of the drawing) inward, it appears to be pointing the same direction as the torso. It's just natural-looking. Here's a quick sketch to test out OpenCanvas. Points for anyone who knows what picture inspired it. ![]()

You're right. Bowls of dehydrated string beans have made more sense than that.It was 2:14 AM. But that's no excuse. I'll explain myself more clearly: From the way he is drawn, it looks as if he was originally facing one way, then turned his head to look at something. When HIS left leg is pointed in the original direction, the pose looks more believable.

Fantastic work comlock, I love the blob. He kind of looks like my uncle! I was wondering if you guys could help me out with a problem. Powers be! Seems ol' Bitey cleans up quite nicely after a good shave! Love the sketch, Comlock! :EDIT: Heheh! Yours certainly is an improvement from the previous, Fuzzillogic! The old one does crack me up, though--- it's very old school. I'd break it down, but I'm a little short on time. ![]() First off-- I love how you've made the bird muscular-- it portrays strength. Also, curving the saw-like beak adds character. I would work on the overall rhythm of his body-- creating more consistant thickness and flow from limb to limb. (I hope I termed that correctly) Look at where his neck connects to the torso, too. It seems a little off-center. Experiment with different poses! Keep sketching them out and refining until it finally portrays the strength you want! Don't forget about lines of action, either! Here's two old sketches that I originally drew in Flash-- but just colored them today in Adobe Elements: ![]()
