I like the top left pirate the most. The other two are standing in very unnatural poses, bit disturbing. Great job anyway.

Now, I don't like the subject much, but I kind of like how it turned out -

Elephant!

That is SWEET!

You've got a very nice, loose style going there, man, with emotion and detail coming through the line work. Really excellent.

If anything, I would say that the lines show a "studied" laxness while the shading/hatching is not quite up to the level of the rest of the lines. Perhaps using single strokes for the shading instead of zig-zag, back-and-forth strokes, and maybe keeping them in a unified range of direction would have more effect over all.

The hands, too, could use just a little more detail. Not much more, but just enough to make the arms look less like stumps.

Really lovely work, though. Have you tried shifting the ink colour a bit warmer, a little more sepia/sienna? Might lock in the warmth and vulnerability of the character.

Hope you're doing more like this.

I agree with what Kib said.

Try to look up some of Alan Lee's rough pencil sketches, they remind me of the style - well the loose gestury ones anyway...

I like that rubber, really sets a mood, i dont know whati like about it, but it really reminds me of the ominous no mans land. Not so much that you drew a nightscene but thats the sheer presence rather than it being day or night. Kinda reminded me of mordors evernight setting. One thing i might want is a bit less rough and a bit more refined. Alot of it looks a tad too stroked and blurred.

maybe you could do your thumb, then crank up the magnification? It kinda looks like alot of the work was done at 100% view

thats all the crits ive got about it though, looks great, might wanna hire you for concept work of a future film after im done with my bajillion years of school :D

Gah! Always with the talent and making me feel (and look) useless. You guys are amazing, so much style and depth with so little. Less really is more. You guys beat CGTalk anyday, just because you're stuff is so unique and distinctive, CGTalk has become a little clone-y as far as I'm concerned.

I was trying to mess around with the filters in photoshop, but I couldn't get them to work. Determined to finish it, I just dove in with the brush tool.

Reminds me of the art in the liner notes of a cd called "The Note" by a band I love called Bane.

As mentioned, the colors (as well as everything else) work together very nicely, IMO. I like it quite a bit. *thumbs up*

I've been drawing some of my more favorite characters lately in an attempt to hopefully improve my own. If anyone knows of some good books or resources on character design, I'm all ears :)

Othugmuffin: Those are good, strong sense of style and creativity in the character, but your noses lack reality and distiction. The look like three lines in place of a nose. Try to experiment with a little form and some nostrils... smelling is hard without them :D

Reminds me of Miyazaki for some reason. Like a simple, innocent-looking design.
Taking the Miyazaki comparison one step closer, I think you should make a sketch like that in ink or pencil, and do a watercolour wash underneath. That would look hella' cool.

Here's a sort of animation-sketch I did. It's a mock-up for a similar animation that I'll start putting at the start of my upcoming submissions to newgrounds. Once I clean it up, I hope to make the file public.

Tips on scanning right here.

Also in the Reference section, I think.

The basic idea with scanning is that the machine is looking for the darkest point, the lightest point, and a mid-tone. Your scanner software should be able to set those points or at least influence the way the scanner interprets them.

Open up the Advanced controls (hopefully your scanner has them) and start experimenting. You can always do more work in PS (or another imaging soft) but the better the data that you initially capture the better material you'll have to work with.

And check your scanner's website for new software and drivers.

Thanks, I've always wanted to try that so I guess I'll give it a shot when I get the chance.

Nice animation too, I think it would look good if the lines kept 'whirling'.

edit - It's full of flaws, but I can't be arsed to fix them. Frames done in Photoshop and then put together in Flash.

Sorry for the horrible loop-ness. :yfok:

Uhm, this is my first attempt at 'scenery', I'm generally not to good with it but I've been practicing everyday since this drawing. This was made for an RP. I had to create my own region, creatures, race... Etc. I'm going to be making better ones eventually but for now, this is what I have. >.<

(My office scanner is broken so I had to take a picture, sorry. This was drawn a bit ago but it's the most recent picture I have.)

Does anyone have any advice, tips? Perhaps someone would like to laugh in my face? I can take it, I'm a big girl. ^^

Hey there, everyone. It's been forever since I've been in here, but I have a new drawing. I haven't worked on a format I could scan for awhile now, so this was a nice break. I did this one for my AP class, and it's done all with fine-line pen (except for abit of shading in the sky). Comments/critiques welcome!
