Did a quick color study of a photo of my wife. The proportions are a good bit off in areas, but I still kinda dig it.

Freckles! (swoon) :D

Tell us about the custom brush you used for the delightful little devils.

And sure, things are a little wonky here and there, but the character comes through so strongly. A lovely portrait.

Tell us about the custom brush you used for the delightful little devils.

Actually, it's was really simple. It was just a regular oval brush with scatter, random opacity and a bit of randomness in hue and saturation. Then I painted on a layer set to "Linear Burn" and turned to a low opacity.

It was actually the first time I've been able to get her freckles close to accurate.

Damn you freckles! You stir my soul but warp my wacom! :wbitey:

I realy dig your colours and paintingstyle Dave, and the way you described the volum of the face with those freckles. I bet you also noticed that one of the eyeglass is realy wide compared to the otherone =)

I love the colour pallette Dave..... I kinda like the way the glasses are.... They show how fragile she is compared to the kinda larger size that they are if that makes sense.

I tend to see personality in everything these days...Keep up the fantastic work!

Pretend his hands are in his butt.

Try drawing bitey in a 3/4th pose, and make sure to put down constuction lines before you put on stuff like fur.

Oh, Humble! That picture makes my heart dance. :bfoot: Aside from the critiques the others have given, the combination of her eyes being slightly wider and her eyebrows being slightly more acute makes her look a little fearful. Maybe it's just me; you tried to capture a really difficult expression. -> :P Beautiful job.

That's really freaky.  I'm working on a VERY similar character right now.

Yeah - and it was too freaky... <_<

I tryed to get a job - making a mascot for some food company - I failed...

- maybe they didīnt like my kind of humor... :bing:

Nice set up in yours, Ang. : the gentleman and the beast...

Looking forward to see some more action... :D

HumbleEgo: great potrait - as MrNurbs points out - lots of personality..

In your art and in her face...

Not to be indiscreet but I love the tongue

Well you know how some restraunts are. For some reason they just don't want their restaurant portrayed as a place where the chef is an ax wielding maniac. Strange..

Nice job there :) (her tongue is a bit big, she's like nightcrawler)

Anyways, I like it more than the reference pic.

Wow. Really different for you, and very beautiful. Pretty flower. :P

The splatters in back are scanned textures or brushes?

Edit: Looking at it again, the space above him looks a little empty. I'd point one of his spines into that area.

Like this maybe:

Good call, Ang! I was rushing to keep it under 40 minutes and didn't fully deal with the composition as you have. I especially like the arrangement of the front spine wing thingie, helps lead my eye through the arm and to the purty flower.

The textures in the back are scanned spray paint and sumi brush ink squiggles.

------------

On this being a departure from my normal work, it is. We've being holding Thunderdome's at the office the past two friday's. Someone sends out like 3-4 topics and everyone picks one. Well, my typical subject matter is very much in the minority at VV, so this helps me take on unfamiliars subjects.
