I noticed you guys said that you use photoshop mainly for the drawings...

I've been trying to use corel to get used to my wacom but I can't seem to get the brushing to turn out even close to what I see on here. Do you just use plain brushes on photoshop and mess with the colors and opacity?

Lots of random faces:

Not all of them were done today. I did a few faces earlier as a quick warmup on the wacom.

They're real nice. Do I have a bad memory or have you been mainly doing face sketches? I'd like to see more anatomy studies and nature drawings as well :) Damn, I wish I had a scanner or a wacom so I'd have "a reason to draw" when I would put my drawings here..

EDIT: Okay, you've had a nice variety of things submitted, like Jams and so on.. I guess you could forget what I said above and keep on posting whatever you like ;)

You have obviously worked really hard and have developed bags of ability, Comlock, and your style comes through in each one. I like it when you get away from your standard features, like the noses on the last three guys on the bottom right are more adventurous than most of the others.

Jemooky your pic is lovely. Really illustrative and interesting.
I find the signature a bit over-large... Distracts from the image!

That's kind of ironic to say considering the one I'm posting below. I had to put a watermark in because we're pitching it to a coffeeshop for an ad series. It's a collaborative piece; my wife did the line art and I did the manipulation.

And here's a quickie from yesterday that came out nicely:

Little old lady who?

Oh, I forgot I put that in there. I was just screwing around, with no intention to save. I usually like to keep my signatures fairly modest in size and visibility.

You and your wife make a talented team.
If I were to make one suggestion, ease up on the "double line" effect near the middle. It looks cool on the edges of the page, but more like a 3-d picture (with red and blue line) in the centre.

Thanks! :)

The line art is very straightforward and sparse. It can be pushed in so many different ways and the multiple lines is just one possibility. That 3D effect is exacerbated by the smaller size of this scaled-down version (also the lines are getting pretty jagged), but I kind of like the false depth they give on the front of the counter. They also make the leaves on the L pop quite a bit.

One of the line layers has a blue-orange gradient masked into it. The textures are from photos of the counter panelling and the floor of the shop. The splatters are ink marks scanned in.

ur wife kicks ass! :gasp: ;)

lol that is absolutely excellent Kib's Wife and great Manipulation too Kib.

Love ur little old lady. really great for a quickie. it really reminds me of something that i cant put my finger on. like an old style art or something. ahhh! where have i seen that style?

(I feel stupid critiquing someone of your calibur Kib, and a simple quickie, but, i dunno about you, but her neck looks like it joins her chin, or looks really baggy, but still its only a quickie and you probably knew that urself)

im starting to doubt if it is ur site, because ur art is much better than the art on the site. the art on the site is good but from what have seen of yours on brackenwood its far better

Did a quick back study tonight with Painter. Trying to get used to it again, it's been almost a year since I did anything substantial with it:

I'm really into Jemooky's piece for some reason...probably because it kicks ass. In all seriousness though, that unrefined look gives me happy's

Love the design style kib, classy. Damn shame you spilt coffee all over it though hey? ;) :D

OoooOOOOOooh! Kib was an ESL teacher in japan! I was thinking of teaching for Nova next year - can we talk about it some time? :)

On another note, I think brakenwood could use a freelancers advice section.

Many here can draw better than Dali, but I've noticed that creatives can often struggle with the business side of things. How did you go about setting up your own business and finding clients? Managing money? Promotion?

I know comlock freelances a bit and I'm sure Mr ego has worked in that area too. Of course Adam currently does mercenary work too - and if ang isn't in demand for her skills I'll eat my spats sideways.

That's a lovely back, HE. Did you use a reference image or was it drawn from your deep knowledge of anatomy?

And do you have any comments about the differences between Painter and PS now that you have re-visited?

RH those are really, really great. I love your control over the cross-hatching and how much form you can render with it without losing the image to the technique. The guy putting up the poster and the facial details (the first two images) are so, so strong; the first showing composition and concept and the second showing rendering skills.

The expression on the ape is lovely and it was a great touch to leave the R side blurred out and without detail.

The last character's anatomy is so well-defined (the curves of all the little muscle bundles under the skin) that it really brings him to life.

Well done sir! :D

It's from a photo, silly. I don't have a "deep knowledge of anatomy", it's fairly shallow. ;) Which is why I'm trying to do more studies like this. Especially backs are sort of alien to me. Things like arms and legs have a fairly simple linear construction and make them easy to grasp. But backs, and the torso in general, are such a convoluted mesh of muscles going every direction.

Anyway, I joined Human Anatomy for the Artist and Female Anatomy for the Artist this week. They're both excellent resources and really cheap. So, I'm gonna try to start doing more anatomy studies like this to get more comofrtable with them.

Nothing particularly different than before. The only reason I've been so Photoshop lately is that we don't have Painter at work. :(

The reason I love Painter though is that it makes be feel more like I'm really painting than just "digi painting" like in Photoshop. Their brush engine kicks the shit out of PS. It's really gooey and organic feeling.

But, the organization and typography tools in Painter suck. So, it's a trade off. Painter also runs slow as hell on my machine so it's a bit of a chore to work hi-res. I suppose it's the brush engine.

Great links! I hadn't heard of that source before, but those were the quickest "Add To Favorites" on record, I think. :)

Did you see the deal where if you link to their page they'll send you all their freebies in high-res zipped?

Whenevery I'm out of practice with Painter I dip into the Painter Wow! books that got me into it in the first place. And it has been a while now, but I'm deep into pencil, ink and wash at the moment.

If you're looking for sources, there are some good deals to be found at Alibris for the very good book called Atlas of Foreshortening. The cover price is $45 but I see some listed now for $15! 310 pages of just pics, 1 or 2 pics per page. Well worth the money.

Looking forward to more backs (or back to more forwards).

I whole-heartedly second that notion. It won't be long before I'm out of college, and if I don't get a studio job when I graduate, I have no idea where to start doing freelance. Some advice from the pros would be fantastigorgic.
