its cool to see the actual 'meat' behind the painting, thats what im working at doing, is getting those preliminary lines and gestures down to in the end transform into a subject

That looks a little off... the shoulders arent so horizontal. Here's how I saw it:

Hey, well, look at the collar bones, they suggest that you can't see the back shoulder very well. But I just started teh shoulder too early, so that it looks slanted like u correctly showed

Either way the collar bone looks off to me.

Another Larger Reference

See how the Sternocleidomastoid meets near the center of the collar bone?

Yours has the collar bone shifted left almost to the shoulder.

Love the rendering though! Classic Neo_Uk touch!

Actually the anatomy in the lineart is off.

Jack, I really like your new site.

Its like small, simple, organized, and most of all, To the Point. Theres no bs'ing in it, you can get to your content easily enough and quick enough to make people come back for more!

Awesome job mate!

Good start joey, you might try refining him a bit now, he almost looks a bit TOO sketchy :D if possible.

I speed drew/colored this picture in an hour and a half, maybe two, without reference. And im really proud how it turned out. Im trying to experiment with photoshop a bit more, pushing the envelope past what i usually do.

This guys a stone gaurdian. At least thats what it looks like to me :P

I could critique it, but instead I'm just gonna advise you to do some more.
There are errors, but it has a certain charm. Try doing some more.

Ya, I REALLY need some advice.

Proportions... waaaaaaaaay off. I don't understand what's with me.. I can't draw the dude like I want it. Anyway, advice for what brushes to use in sketchbook would still be greatly appreciated.

Please don't post images that large, it makes monkeys of us all and breaks the page format. - Mod :bfoot:

Just draw alot of bears from photos(like the ones Bleego posted). you'll notice alot of features too the bear if you'll draw them yourself.I still learned some stuff by just drawing that one sketch, even though it came out absolutly horrible. But its just a study. I doesent realy need to look good. Then you can exagurate and vary the style to it later.. ( I was looking at other bearphotos while I made the other heads. It's almost like making caricatures, exept this time it doesent realy need to look like the referencematerial. So it gives you alot of freedom)

The trick is to keep drawing them. Do allot of thumbnails untill you have tought out every aspect of the design. Then just do sketches untill you're familiarized.

Guys... why has no one mentioned drawing bears in action???

Go to the videostore or google video, search for a nature documentary or rent the movie Bear, and draw bears like crazy. Don't pause the video at any time. I have examples of this in my creature workshop here, near the bottom of the first post under the "Know Your Anatomy!" section.

Drawing still reference is great for stuff like detail, but I learn overall form a lot faster with this method.
