I've never been a person to sit out and draw a bunch of sketches to get an idea of what I'm going to make. I just sit and think about it forever. When I draw it, I just get frustrated and quit... But, I realize now that that's probably what my problem is. I'm going to try to make it with all fours on the ground - like it should be.

Another scanning tip: allot of software has image sharpening enabled by default, while this is great for photos and such it can really screw with your sketches and make them appear really grainy. The only thing I really do in my scanning program is trying to get a full range from black to white and a good contrast between paper and image, I do the cropping and polishing up in an image editing program. Another thing that helps is scanning in higher quality, scanners often have the option for fast scans (draft) or slow scans (high quality). This can have a dramatic impact on the image quality. I allways scan in high quality at at least 300dpi in 48bit color (I downsize to 72dpi and 8bit internal processing in PS). I makes scanning slower but it makes the sketch look allot more like the original. |

But theres something missing..![]() Im sorry, I just had to (Ri made me do it=P) Acctually, I think its quite good. maby make the window in the background more white, and maby smooth out the gradients there a bit more.. compositionwise, it would probably look better with a taller window: ![]() And you can choose if you want the hat or not =) Acctually I think the painting looks even sader when he has that party hat on^^ I guess that was the theme in the picture you had in mind anyway (something sad) |

If' you're really hard-core about anatomy, the Calderon book is great. If you're more into motion/gesture, go for Hultgren. They're both awesome, though. Comlock, you SLAY me. Good show!

![]() Makes me think of a song this way. No Surprises by Radiohead Buss, those are great, but you should try draw in realistic proportions a little more. Proportions are really important, especially when you're dig deeper into the flesh. If you want a good exercise try doing some bean torsos. Great for learning about the rough shape of the torso (which is very important). |

That shape doesn't work unless the person is bending over, and moreover it's lazy if you're learning structure. Nor does it take into account hip or shoulder angles. Use a spine/ribcage/pelvis configuration instead, like the way Loomis does it.Bean shapes are okay for cartoon characters, I guess. |

He looks tired and unhappy, He's in a wheelchair meaning he's handicaped. He's in the garden (or backyard... whatever...) He's allone. There's lights and a partyhat, meaning that there's a party going on he doesn't want to be part of. It's just creates a certain atmosphere that make me think of that song, granted theres stuff in it that (conspiracy etc...) that doesn't make sence.
To me it's basic structure, a "container" of you want to put it that way. Offcourse there's no underlaying structure, no anatomical detail, just basic gesture and proportional information which I think is just as important. You could draw bones and flesh and still make it come out crap because the overall shape is wrong. There are a hundred ways you could go about drawing the torso, inside out, outside in, sparting from some ovals, sketching the gesture directly. For me the fastest way still is just getting the big bulk defined, then work on the anatomy. The bean isn't the best way but atleast it's a good start. I would not recommend this as an actuall method, just as a practice to get a feel for it. |

I am surprise you actually can hear the lyrics to that song, he mumbles most of them. |

Regarding? The books are "Animal Painting and Anatomy" by W Frank Calderon and "The Art of Animal Drawing" by Ken Hultgren. If you're poor, drawing real animals is great too. |
