ofcourse, those clouds werent from the actual journey pic
 That was just a silly playing around with different brushes. I was just experimenting how I could make those clouds. I just started shaping it out on the real journey pic here: ![]() Wich version do you like better? (the painting is still not finished yet) ![]() |

Ah yes.. I just tend to read certain keywords and block the rest, more important stuff..
For example, I didn't "see" the practising word at all.. :rolleyes:That pic looks quite nice. I think the bright spot need a totally white spot in the middle so it looks more like a sun. It just looks like the sun is behind a cloud, but I see no cloud. Or it's a massive snowball going around the earth which glows

Tough choice man... The more I look at it, the more I think the top one could be a little better since the eye tends to read from top left to bottom right. So you'd have ants-arguement/sun-travelers-dog-panorama shot. You also have the pieces of grass, a good way to lead the eye to a title or signature. Then again I think the painting works out either way. Keep working on it, I can allready feel the gentle breeze and smell the grass.

Thanx Rubberhead=) I guess that version would be better, since it could be easier to read, yea. I got some answers at cgtalk aswell, and they all suggested the mirrored version. So now I feel like I have a totaly new image to work on=) Sephia version just for fun: ![]() bluDi: that white spot is allready 100% white. I cant get it any brighter=( And I tried to avoid it to have a ball shape, because I wanted to have it something like on these refs: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mqt/webpics/scener...%20snowband.jpg http://www.atpm.com/7.12/sewickley/images/sun.jpg |

Oh. I tried to think of something to make it look like more a sun but I couldn't come up with anything
You'll find out. I really like the sephia version. It gives this postcard look from the beginning of 20th century. You might try to develop it further by giving some worn off effects to it
Something that started bothering me are those black borders. And when the tree comes out of the borders, it feels like a staging for a movie or something, behind the scenes But I've got weird associations so if no-one else says anything about them, they're just fine

If you wanna make the sun look brighter you might wanna tro to throw in some complementaries, color contrast is also contrast afterall. This way, you can make stuff appear brighter then it actually is eg. yellow light hitting blue/grey clouds might be more effective then using white. info I quickly did an overlay layer in PS and scribbled in some yellows, give a more dramatic effect, don't know if it's quite what you're after tough. ![]() *edit* I was thinking, the scene is somewhere around early dusk right? I kinda tried to darken the sky except for the area around the corona. Pretty subtle, but might make the scene a little more moody... ![]() Sorry if I'm pushing Arthur, just want it to look good by the time I'll hang it above my bed. :ph43r: |

im a fan of the original way, arthur. in almost every illustration/story about travel or journey i've read or seen, the journey starts in the west/left and ends in the east/right. i think the way you had it before brings something fresh to the journey feel. and if the above statement sounds like it's just full of crap, i like the original version because it's easier to look at because it feels like the sun is setting, which i always prefer over a rising sun.

Thanx Rubberhead=). I dont want the sun to completly take over the image. And if I had to make it even stronger, I would have to let the characters be in complete siluettes. (I think the characters should be more in siluettes as it is now, but that would just make it less intresting to look at^^) but I took a little bit more yellow arond the edge of the sun, and on the characters. But the sun have to be the brightest in the middle, because I wanted to avoid the "egg omelette" feeling to it. I couldent find any reference where the sun is at it's yellow in the middle anyway. (on photo's that is) ![]()

Comlock, I like the top version of the painting. The reason is that my eye reads left-to-right, so it's better for me if the action is happening on the left side. However, I'm sure that if you asked someone Jewish or Arabic for example (whose languages read right-to-left) they'd say that they like the bottom one better. It depends which audience you're aiming for. I tried looking the bottom one over from right to left (against my instincts) and I found that I liked it just as much, but it doesn't look so nice when I look it over from right to left. Oh, and thanks for the crits/examples on my little doodle back there. I'll start experimenting some more...

Comlock, I really like the flipped version with the predominant direction being from L to R. The trouble is that now the dog and the walking backpack guy look as though they are headed against the action. Would it be possible to flip them at this stage so that they too are heading from L to R? Then everyone except the old man and the sitting kid are facing/moving with the eye/action. Just a thought. Love the water drops and the way you are constantly working at this. Must be those long winter nights above the arctic circle? kib |

but if the journey begins isnt the sun more likely to be rising as you'd leave in the morning for a journey to have the most daylight so your less likely to get lost in the dark. So shouldn't the sun be rising if theis is the begining of the journey and by the looks of equipment a long journey so they need the extra daytime? I prefer setting suns too but i think the rising 1 fits in better with the story |
