If you want to develop patterns, go look at old architecture and art weaves:  Celtic, gothic, vitictorian, Thai, Tibetan sand paintings, etc.  We as Americans are cornfed on incredibly simplified designs that have high impact but relatively little sophistication or depth compared to what was the norm a few hundred years ago.  I'm trying to branch out myself and it's difficult.  :fpbls:

Yeah, i've been collecting various pattern samples over the last week or two. I'm also looking into ordering some fabric swatches with various patterns. Anything to increase my mental library in that area.

As for branching out, I've not thought much about it. Originally I was going to do that with my webcomic, but work has been so hectic (two weeks until we're done with the game! :bing: ) that I've severely neglected it.

These days I've been trying to focus on content over style. I feel comfortable with more than a few styles, but I find that it's "the little things" that are so drastically missing from my work: Buttons, Buckles, Patterned Fabric, Various Material Types, etc. So, I've been trying to put more thought into my characters.

I've been following the work of Marko Djurdjevic lately. Granted, our approach is as different as night and day (his work is vary dark and seedy), but his use of pattern and his costume design is very inspiring. He's also very good at dealing with the story behind the characters, which gives way to their look.

Marko Djurdjevic? Oh, that guy is really good. I looked at his pictures and...MAN! his pictures were great! :D He does have that dark and seedy design. I wonder how he does it?

Wow, that sand art is crazy. I can imagine that was a tedious job. The part that amazed me the most was the little ingravings in the pot!! :o

BTW, Humble, what happened to your web comic?

Don't forget islamic art. As I understand it, and I may be misunderstanding some detail, muslims are forbidden from creating nature-related art, so their entire artistic history is based off of patterns. Some very cool stuff, albeit a tad simplistic.

Best Alero of Brackenwood, your character's standing-position is making my yawn. I shouldn't be preaching to people about dynamic positions, but I know that Anghenfil might eat you if you don't draw your characters in motion.

Marko is the shit, haha, I nearly pissed myself when I saw this.
Sheez, hours and hours of painstaking rendering that has been :yfok:

As for me, a quick colour experiment, don't draw as much as I'dd like to these days (tough it's getting better).

There is nothing simplistic about Islamic art:

But, I know you didn't mean it negatively... ;)

Islamic art is wonderful, I've quite a few books on it. They're uber heavy on pattern --- and jaw dropping intricate patterns at that.

Of course, their text is surprisingly intricate. Probably one of the most beautiful looking languages in the world.
When I said simple, I meant like that last image you posted. Many repeating, simple shapes, which seems a far cry from that sand-pattern that Ri posted.

If you ever go to the Masqs in person in Iran or any middle eastern country, they are simply amazing. The detail an work on them is wonderful. Some of which the tile are made of animal bone. Each tile in those giant domes are hand place one by one. Haven't been to one for about 6 years.

They really aren't simplistic, very complicated.

Objection!!!
i see germanic patterns quiet often, their details in the knots are quiet amazing, and considering that most of them are carved in leather, stone, wool and wood makes their technique a good thing to learn:

I like the guy sliding down on the rails rade. Just a tip I've read in a lot of books, try to keep it light and sketchy, don't put too much pressure on your pencil during that initial stage. It's a bugger to erase those lines when its time for inking and such.

And now for something completely different: adagio for strings

Nice one Bleegs, though the back legs seem to be lacking bulk in contrast to the upper body, espesh with such a large tail in the back.

 Nice dave.

Do you use a generator for what to draw?

"Fantasy Ruminant has a single large, crescent-shaped, horn."
If so, can you post a link to that, it seems as though it would be rather nifty to practice with.

It looks fine to me. Ungulates tend not to have much muscle down on the leg itself and more on the thighs and hips. The tail is nicely supported by the thickish tail. If anything, the horn looks more unproportional, but I'm not bugged by it either; it looks within the range of exaggeration for the style you've got here.
