1 1/2 hour value study.

I suck at getting things out quickly. Especially when it comes to more unforgiving mediums like conte crayon. The first hour was spent thumbnailing (am I the only one who hates viewfinders?) and sketching with an H pencil.

The values in general bug me. About half of the shading/highlighting were done post-reference, and it shows. His feet are flat, too. :bing:

havent posted a sketch in AGESSSSSSSSS so today i got the bright idea to use my isight on top of my macbook to take a picture of a...picture i just drew
took about 10 min on it max. Im only really happy with the head.
Crit if ya like, i always enjoy reading em :)
btw, apparently isight flips everything 180 degrees, so you cant see what he is saying which is "MEOW"

i think his neck is a little long and his leg is a little exagerated personally. His right arm is also a little straight too. :P

ive tried taking in alot of things that rubberhead has been teaching me. Took me about 2 to 2.5 hours to do this. Just a creature i sketched up for a large peice i have in mind. It lives in like a bog or swampy place well crit away.

Not bad Raven, I certainly feel volume of the beast. Some crits:

-Cast shadow! It'll anchor him to that ground & be more convincing that he's in that scene. I often forget em too :P .

-His right leg seems a bit tacked on....there's no muscle in his hindquarters that connects his leg to his torso. Check out some bird anatomy, that might help.

-Unless you're going for the softer look, I think your value range could be pushed a bit more.

-The way the feet look, it kinda looks like he has two left feet?

-Just my personal preference, but I always think things look better loaded with texture.

Overall it's a good start. Nice sense of mass & form....just chisel out some more details & fix some minor construction quirks and you'll be set!

Did a little experiment with a quick painting of my character, Gallert. I think it has potential for more exploration...further definition of the character & shading of the background might help it? I'm not sure....I just sort of started with a speed paint in PS then began doing things to it. Maybe something like a background you'll see with the character painted in?

Looking great Dave, he appears a tad flat right now I think - his face in particular. Might be the light direction. I think if you could give some more light from his side, it would help. Maybe a bit of rim light could enhance the mood, but that's your call.
I think his face could be a little more simple, might be me...

Raven
think of your atmospheric perspective, make a new layer and use a low opacity brush to push back the further away mountains. The middle mountain is too high on contrast and appears too close.

...
Speedy for today, yes... I'll admit I used color dodge for the overexposure. Hard to pull off, need to study the effect more.

Ah crap, calibration is a bitch. Wish you could darken the light grey window background in PS...

Better?

Not sure about blue... all the leaves and trees would give off more of a sepia tone.

I'd get greener then; those things on the side don't read as trees/foliage to me, and the color seems too yellow.

A little desaturated blue in the shadows of the water would look nice I think, but I'm color retarded so feel free to ignore me.

Humble, you've just drawn me art teacher. But with pointier hair, and more adimantium steel.

I haven't posted many sketches because my main computer broke down, but I've since discovered things like pencil, and paper. So here is some o' my scanned art.

I know that's my second penny-arcade art, but it would be criminal to ignore my cartooning's roots in observing his style.

Dave: I still love to hate you! If I could do that in an hour I'd pee myself while jumping around all giddy and happy! :P

Raven: You know what? I bloody well love the way you paint! It's so distinctive, and you have a way of making your piece so 3dish while maintaining a cartooney appearance. It's almost like looking at a painting of claymation..... I'm totally digging it! :bfoot:

Rubb: I'm starting to hate you too! :wbitey:
Second run is deffinately better man!

Jem: You joined Bleegs in the hated group awhile ago now! :P
I really like the penny arcade bit man! Wicked shading for colored pencil! :bfoot:

Here's one I whipped up this morning while sitting in front of the TV. Pen and ink again, about 45-ish minutes.

TheEye: Thanks man! Nice shadowing there with the pen and ink.

Jem: Are your toons done in water color?

I went back in and tried making the back mountains faid more into the distance and tried making those middle mountains sit back more in the picture. Sorry it took me the weekend to do this little bit ... halloween partys and all.

Jem: Are your toons done in water color?

Yeah, they are actually. That was one of my first little experimentations with watercolours in the past few years.

I like your dragon picture a lot, but I have a few things to comment on regarding colours. Keep in mind that these are just my preferences, and you could find a million opinions to contradict mine.
I'd lower everything's saturation a few notches. Right now all your colours are extremely vibrant, giving it a fake plasticy look. Also, a lower saturation and contrast in the background would help separate it from the foreground elements.
Also, experiment with trying to use a single colour scheme which you can apply, in different tones, to the entire piece. Maybe it would look better if everything had a slight tint of green? Or red?

I took it way too far in some areas, but here's an example I made using filters in photoshop:
