Inspired by ConceptArt.org, Espen's awesome new paintings, and a link that someone posted on lighting, I came up with this:

It's not perfect, but any crits are extremely appreciated.

Cool stuff, Jem... maybe you could push the pyramid a little to the right (just a thought). Are you gonna keep working on it?

Here's what I did today:

Again, my intense jealousy towards Espen's painting skills drives me to make a landscape. :P

JEMOOOOOOOH! that is so gergeous!! i love the atmosphere in it, so fresh!

i hope you dont mind, but i made a little paint over.

When you painted yours, did you have any refrence, because the blueness you have on the mountain in the distance had almost perfect depth color, i just exgaderated it. the only thing your lacking in the picture is texture and my favorite... CLOUDS .

if you'd like to see a superb depth/realistic and atmosphere picture.

check out this painting by Adolph Tidemand, a norwegian painter, its in oil.

and dont be jealous man, im 1 year older then you, so you still have 1 year to beat me, which i know you will, love your style man!

I don't think I'm really clean, especially when I start, but even when I'm done when you look at my stuff at full res, it's veeeeerrry messy...

Thanks for the paint-over, Espen. I actually did have photo-reference. You can see it here.
In retrospect, I see how much detail I missed out on, which would have made the piece way more interesting. But I was really focusing on colour this time around. All the colours were picked by hand (In other words, I did NOT use the eyedropper tool)
A question for you, Espen: Do you paint in several different layers?

Humble, I'm loving the most recent portrait. I think the choice of an orange background really helps it out. And good job mastering the impossible-to-use-by-moral-hands pallet-knife brush.

One more question: Anyone know where I can find photoshop brushes?

Think the question is more where to draw the line between paintery and "messy".
But you work more opaque and use wider strokes then Espen, so you're more paintery, Espen uses more glazes and smaller strokes. I guess Espens work can feel a little too messy sometimes, and yours might sometimes be a little sterile (I screw up on both  )

Studies are looking good BTW, maybe you could try to push for more colour nuances (micro hues) on your skin, factoring in indirect lighting and subsurface scattering - allways wanted to use those terms :P

Sketch in one layer, primary colors in the second layer, smoothing in the third layer, and effects and such in forth layer. and you have to use the eyedroper tool, its your best friend! :D

Harsh words Pieter..... ....Joke. Yeah, my style is really messy, i try to figure out new ways to paint, but its so damn hard!

Love the studies dave!

For me it's usually:

1. Sketch on one layer, paint on the same layer, paint on the same layer, paint on the same layer, paint on the same layer, until done....

Im putsing along on this picture so badly. Im thinking ive been really lazy lately and not working as hard as i was with my art. Im still sketching in my sketch book and such but just beacuse of varius activites and games i keep pushing my art off to the side and im actully frustrated that im doing so. I have like 2 days coming up off work so im going to get this picture done by then. Anyways heres so far...

Well, the next drawings will probably help people redefine who I really am... a horrible artist, who hides behind 'drawing styles'. Shameful.
:(

These are things I've done in art school. The first is just a line test, spent more time on the second one. Our teacher doesn't encourage crosshatching btw.

On a lighter note, here are some scribbles I did in animation and design classes.

Hah, improved, you say? Not really, I'm just drawing in a slightly different way.
And I still can't draw a lot of things the way I want to.
