Katatafisch - I can see dome really cool things happening with that picture, perhaps the background is very dark and two separate light souces. Maybe the tip of the staff giving off one glow while the extended hand giving another color. Its got some real potential.

Todays submission isn't really a sketch, more of a photo manipulation exercise. A group of 360 gamers wanted some help formulating there ideas for a new clan logo. I just quickly pieced this together for them.

Hahaha! Genius!

The composition is great. If you did that for someone else, you'd better have gotten payed for that. It's professional grade.

Heh, I thought it was funny too, that is why I did it. No I didn't get paid either. They are running a contest for 3200 Xbox Live points, that's like $30. I don't know if they will even use mine at this point. Even if they did I wouldn't feel comfortable taking any type of payment. Someone else had the idea but didn't have the know how to make it happen, and it only took me 10 minutes at the most.

I can't take credit for the composition either, it is just a spoof of this

Zwickel I'll shoot you a Friend Request, gamertag HadOne2Many, but I'm not on very often, I'm still recovering from my Gears of War addiction. Now when I feel like playing I draw something.

For today I colored someone elses line art, my main goal was to familiarize myself with using textures. How many do you see?

Image Linked, may be pushing PG-13 rating

This lines were drawn by Lancer.Evox.2k on the Polykarbon forum, here is the original thread

hey malakym, i really like your face design, i think it would be interesting how you would design the body of this guy, the face itself is really good, i like the expression and the hair, somehow the mouth looks weird

here is a doodle i did at school
it should be a fish for those who dont see it
the face at the corner is not part of the img its just....there

Not always. When I'm designing everything, yes. When I'm doing some action poses, i draw a light action line and start with the head and torso. When they're just standing around, I usually start with the head.

-AnTiSeAl- - Thanks :) Nips, what nips

Dash - Thanks for your comments, I'm not familiar with Gaia online but I'll take your word for it. I kinda think most anime looks the same anyway. For the shadow do you mean something other than duplicating my color layer, adding a color overlay, using a blur filter and then distorting it? :P But that would require effort on my part

Malakym - well he's interesting already so I say yeah develop it a little further then look at it again.

C0mBineD - I think starting with the torso is great when drawing in general, this is also what I do. It is easier to attach a head and neck properly to a body than try and attach a body to a head. When just coming up with ideas for a character though I do what Malakym is doing. I start with the head, and usually draw 4 or 5 different expression so I can get a feel for the character before moving on to action shots.

Katatafisch - cool picture, reminds me of an old game I had on the Sega Dreamcast called "Seaman".

EDIT: RKTuneKitty - missed yours, great job on the hair!

unbelievable, i like the dynamic pose, i also like how you draw the hands, its always my problem, the knuckles look so cool
the hands are still a lil too big for the body arent they? also the arms look a bit strange
i like the dog tags, it was a must have for this guy
cool design malakym...do some more :D

Malakym - as with most of your drawings it is very stylized so it is harder to give a really good crit but I'll try.

Good - For the most part it feels believable which I feel is the key when drawing a heavily stylized piece like this. You can push a style as far as you want provided someone believes it when they look at it. The pants, jacket, feet and right arm (our left) all fit together nicely.

Bad - one area does stick out to me as wrong and that is the arm holding the knife. The hand looks like it is floating in mid air at an awkward angle and the knife doesn't look like it is in his hand, but rather behind it. This area could definitely use some retouching. Also the hair looks lifeless right now. Way to much hair gel or something, maybe you could give it a little more life since he appears to be jumping at us.

Hope that helps.

Thank you. The knife arm is what I was worrying about. Because the forearm is behind the hand in this shot. It's just a really bad angle to draw without a reference. And since no one was jumping at me with a knife in lunch, I was every reference short.

I'll take a look at myself copying this pose in the mirror, and see if i can remember how it looks in order to make it believable.

I noticed the trouble with the hair, too. I'm always worried it takes away from the image and just says "Oh look: it's spikes....for hair".

Right now I'm looking through my Sin City books to learn how to do hair in a slightly more western art style. (I suck at hair.)

As for the knife itself, I saw that the hand was a little tilted in towards his body, and since I only had like 10 minutes left to do the drawing and I wanted to get some detail done, I just tilted the knife as well instead of changing the hand.

Ain't being a slacker awesome?

Thanks for the crits, man. :)
