Greywolf: The stuff on the right isn't meant to be anything actually ;D - it was more of an abstract thing. Mucking around with colours. Katatafisch: Generally I use another technique, but for this one I drew out the hair in one single colour. Completely blocked out. Then I moved on to using a brush with a darker, less saturated colour. The size of the brush was good old 1 :P. (Default 'Hard Round' Brush) I then followed the same technique with a slightly more bright colour, stroking along paths with the small brush. To finish it off I added a few more random colours into the mix to give it some depth. and about the photoshop thing, its only with these paintings that I have really used it in. Its been a while since I've done anything digital, these are just tests to fully bring me into using the program. I'm nowhere near skilled compared to some other people on this forum, so I just keep that in mind ;D I also use a cheapo $10 wacom - got it second hand from some guy who had no clue what it did >.> and yes, I am 'slightly nudity' guy

omfg how big is your wacom??? 10$ youre kidding... i payd 100€ for a pentagram a4 sized... and to the hair stuff...u really do it with a size 1 brush...dude you really have too much time xD try making some black dots maybe 2-5 or so and save them as one brush...this way you can create hair strains way easier |

(BTW, sorry for post whoring, ill stop posting so much in one thread >_> ) Mines rather small, cant remember the size - but it isn't a4, I can assure you that Generally I use a whole range of styles for the hair, including a dotted brush (also useful for getting skin texture ). This time I just wanted to try something different however, it actually didn't take much time either. Though I doubt I will be using this style again >.> - I think its back to your suggestion next time.Custom brushes ftw |

havent really tried many styles- i figure better to get good at one before i tackle anything else, but i really like roughwork- nothing too minimalist and cartoony looking and nothing too polished- plus my options are limited with no specialised software yet |

SuperSack, heres a bit of advice :). You are painting on a white background which is a huge no-no. What happens is you end up with lighter colours just looking more white, in turn making it look like all your highlights are done with white. Another big no-no. Make sure you pick out your highlights according to the lighting around them. Such as if you were standing near a candle, the light on your face would be a light orange. I highly suggest starting with a desaturated colour for a background. Or at least just to paint over it. and if the background colour really bothers you, just cut out the image and paste it back onto a white background again. Also, you don't really need nice software to do any of this. I never used to paint with photoshop, rather I used to paint with open canvas (Which I believe muzzoid posted a link to somewhere) which is completely free, and an awesome drawing program. With all that said, I do admit that I like what you have going, its a cool style, but make sure you branch off and try different things. Keep up the good work, and I hope some of this helps (Oh and yes, New Zealander's do spell color like colour. Not in your crazed american way  ) |
