nice Echarin! I like the shading in the hair! the only thing I have to say is to maybe add more shading to the face, and also work out the proportions a bit. The front of the face appears to be head-on, while the right side and the ear suggests that it is a 3/4 view. are you reading any books or tutorials on portrait drawing, or are you just drawing? If not I strongly suggest it because once you know a bit about the structure of the face and how angles affect it drawing portraits like that will be much easier.

scarabee: haha I'm fine! I love doing drawings like these because they are a nice break from tedious life drawings, and they allow me to exercise my creativity (something which I've come to realize is completely different from simply knowing how to draw well).

I drew it during class in a fine felt tip marker, then a little while ago (at home) I did a quick paint job in photoshop just to see what it would look like colored. I think I'm still going to work on it though. thanks for the compliments! I'll try to start making more for you guys!

here's something I did last week
Posted Image
just experimenting for the first time painting in photoshop (and using colors in general!) I didn't mean for the sides to be so soft, but I couldn't figure out a way to fix it without making it seem unnatural

edit: supersack: that looks awesome! I love the style, and the red is also a great touch!

haha nice deuce! funny thing is, I love doing the exact same thing! :P

here's a picture of a friend I did over the past couple days
Posted Image
still learning how to paint in photoshop, its hard to find good online tutorials for beginners like me lol.. anyways this took around 7 hours between tonight and yesterday. way too long considering the detail in it, but it was a learning experience for me hehe. also I redid the hair like twice and STILL couldn't get it right. I was pretty clueless on much of it :P. over the next couple of days I'll probably touch it up some more............................. or maybe not haha

any tips??!?!

P.S. at the end I DID adjust the levels a bit to make her look a little more glamerous. lost a little detail in the process but I'll try to work that in.. maybe :P

Here's some 5-min speedpaints.

This one is really confusing. It's two horses charging down a steep cliff with warriors slashing at each other. Then past the little pass they are going for, there is a plain with the remnants of a battle smoking in the valley, with a dark wide river. I forgot to do atmosphere so its very hard to tell how far away stuff is.

I liked the way this on turned out better, it still makes sense if seen from a distance. Just an armored man standing in a crater he just made. Trying to make a chromish looking material... Also playing with fire and dust in an already hot and bright environment to play with the mood and feel.

I like the lighting on that last "knight image" you have there bardaux!

Echarin: You could try to explaining your eyes more in volume instead of lines.

Posted Image
as you can see I was quite inacurate in placing the eye balls on the vaige help line I placed accross the face. Ignore that, hehe.

Thanks for the crits. I'll make sure to keep all that in mind for my next one.

Usually the light comes from above, so these areas are in shadow.

The light is still coming from above in this image as well (sun light)
Eventhouh it's vaige, the shadows are still in the same spots.

-eye socket corner
-underside of nose
-upper lip
-area right under the bottom lip

It can help to accent these shadows in a drawing too, since the shapes will be explained alot more clearer that way. Ofcourse, thats up to you to choose =)
(the one I did in my last post was prob a bit to much and obvious)

EDIT: Anghenfil: Glad you added that extra comment comment there, you're absolutley right of course ^^

Arthur, I think your general advice is good, but top lighting isn't the only orientation of environmental light. Shadows on a face are entirely dependent on where the lighting is. Sorry to be a pain in the ass, but I feel like it needs to be said.

Posted Image

Echarin, light follows concrete rules, and the sooner you internalize those rules, the easier it will be to make realistic faces. Comlock points out where the usual facial shadows are. Even very simple representations of these shadows make a pretty convincing face.

Here's a sketch of a brilliant actor from an equally brilliant TV series:

Messed up a few things (nose is too short, mouth is not at all what it's like in the picture, forehead's too short, chin's a little too long), but I think he should be recognizable.

I know you only did this image real quickly, but I decided to have some fun anyway.

Posted Image

The face you drew is a little off. The way his nose was pointing, it should be a profile, but the place that its all positioned suggest it is a 3/4 view. Not to say that mine is good either... :F
I also exaggerated the smile, because I need practice with expressions. Even though you were going quick and trying to get a high-contrast dark shadow, it is still important to do reflected light so you can see aroundsabout where the form is outline. You did a nice job on the metal staff, I just added some of the light reflected off his jacket, plus some ambient blue...

fun stuff, Thanatos

Good stuff Melk, but if his shoulders are bent like that his torso should be off center too.

Heres a quickie i did. I hate it to death, and it frustrated the hell out of me.

I think he needs a longer nose, and he needs that maniac grin showing in a way. The hand on the hat is still bugging me.... And the shoulder looks.. way too big...
