those faces look fine to me! I love the style, and the eyes look great! in terms of flatness, I would try to add a little more detail to your line work, particularly on the nose and maybe showing some more of the wrinkles and depressions created by the shape of the skull (or use shading to show this if you are going to color them in). However as line drawings the style looks great as is to me. here are some quick sketches I did off of pictures from magazines. Magazines have endless high quality pictures that are interesting to draw so it is easy to spend hours looking through them doing these. ![]() ![]()

Fantastic stuff, Tony--- your style reminds me quite a bit of Neal Adams in the way you render shadows and texture. I love the rough, wide strokes you used to shade larger areas--- and the delicate, expressive lines in the eyes and lips. It's full of rich, steamy sketchiness. For future sketches, you should experiment using some softer lead/charcoal to go in and push the darker values once you've hashed things out. These drawings you've posted up are perfect foundations, ready for the trimmings and depth that a darker line will lend them. It's crude, but a simple contrast plug brings out the depth (and possible depth) from your work quite nicely: Is it not beautiful?! ![]() Keep these magazine sketches coming, Tom! |

thanks a bunch for the encouraging feedback! Really makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere doing these rather than just wasting my time
I used 6B graphite sticks on newsprint for these, and I really love the freedom the pure graphite sticks give you over a regular pencil. I haven't thought of using charcoal, but now that you mention it I think I'll pick some up next time I run by the art store, and also maybe some 8B sticks as well. That contrast adjustment really does make it look a lot nicer, too!

nice sketches tony i dont do many sketches on paper maybe thats y i suck haha anyway here are the same sketches from up there colored as promised ...i can never paint skin with the right tones and make it look fleshy and alive. its always been flat and the colors don't mesh together for some reason...i tried my shading to be as accurate as possible...and subtle hues that are barely noticable...they were done in a few hours. my favorite was the blue guy hehe and i wasnt paying attention to the hair it was about skin. comments please? i could use some

The only thing that I can think of is that the seem to lack a little structure, making the forms a little wishy washy. Do you use those steps of drawing the head with all the guidelines first? If you don't I would suggest that and doing some sketches from photos and from life to get yourself even more knowledgable about the human face and figure.

Err... this is about 2 hours' worth of sleep-deprived sketching during lecture.
![]() ![]() Being sleep-deprived made me creative. Ironically, since it is psychology course, I now know why (you periodically slip into stage 1 sleep for a few seconds at a time, and stage 1 sleep is hallucinogenic). cantdraw05, some of those faces are just great, especially the woman with the long neck and brown hair on the very left. The only thing is, I get the feeling that with some of them you're not really letting yourself go (not really feeling the characters and taking chances), but are trying to draw by formula. The two male characters at the top have this feel (2nd and 3rd from right). It makes the drawing a lot less vibrant when you do that. My suggestion is, unless you're doing this for money and really need to be consistent, don't resort to formula. Animators as diverse as Richard Williams and Yuriy Norshteyn will back me up on this: formula is the bane of art. 'tis better to make the "divine mistake" than to be predictably consistent. Luckily, though, many of your faces are good and vibrant. Only some of them have this problem. |

SEX RED!!!

can'tdraw: you've got skin tone under natural light in the bag mainly. Try experimenting with someone standing near a coloured light so that prominent features and the hair pick up the colours. Esn: wow I should try drawing when tired, there's some pretty unusual and creative things in your sketches |

@ cantdraw wow, i think they are really really really good but try the method Twinimation mentioned, im actually right now trying to learn the structure of the human head from scratch like understanding the bone structure of the head and then try to develop a three dimensional understanding of it... it really helps when you get used to it. and then you can add the eyes, nose ect. and when you have the basic structure of the bone structure in your mind and know how the skin is layed over you can add the lightning and shadows easily and more realistic its just a suggestion...although its a tedious method... |

It doesn't work if you almost can't stay awake, though - if that's the case, you won't feel up to drawing anything even slightly creative. There has to be a certain balance. I don't know how to get there exactly, it was just a lucky coincidence that time. I was just tired enough to be in that stage just before sleep where you start imagining crazy things (almost like dreaming, except you're still half-conscious). |

Uhm...

Thanatos, those are great, but just so they don't get pissed off, it's "Your Dreams," not "Youre Dreams" Zhenmuron, off the bat, I notice two things. It looks like his right foot is just floating rather than holding up his weight, and his left leg would look a bit less stuff and unnatural if you bent it down at the knee a tiny bit. |

I think that's a good idea, Thanatos. The "4 miles" gives the picture an aura of hope, and makes the dreams seem like they're within reach. Of course, make you sure you get the spelling right (unless you mean to say "you will become a collection of dreams in four more miles").

I really like the painting, Thanatos, but the LL's on "will" are kind of hard to read. I really like the pinkish, dusky sky and the trails of cloud in the BG though.

cantdraw05 - wow, that's some excellent stuff. Thanatos - it's quite good, but I have one suggestion: make the "your dreams 4 miles" sign stand out more, perhaps by having darker text. |
