That's great Bodot! You have a very good sense of logistical shading, i dig the rough blend too. One thing though is his head is super stretched and his cranium is a tad big. I don't know if you where going for that look but i did a small edit and added some lines of reference. Hope it helps!

bodot! You're right!--- the ribcage is quite short, now that you mention it! I was trying to make it appear as if he was slightly hunched forward. Guess it didn't come through all that well. Do you have a reference picture for that last value study of yours? I'd love a peek at it! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few more pose studies. 10-15 minutes each.

Thanks guys Yes the face went out a little small - I have mirrored the canvas a couple of times and corrected skewing - so it went smaller and smaller. The reference is a little clay figure I have made - I'll post a picture later. Bo |

When someone (or something in your case) is bent over the rib cage is in front of the rest of the torso. It shrinks a little bit because of foreshortening, but you should only have to worry about that if he was bent right over and you could see the top of his head. |

Wow, I flick through this thread and I'm impressed by all the great sketches you guys throw out. My drawing skills pale im comparison, but I'll try not to let that deter me from posting a few things. Robot sketch done in 10-15 minutes, the main issue seems to be that his knees are a little low on his legs, not too sure what else. Enjoy I guess

Eyyy - he's funny.. Please give him a little more solid lower bodypart.. Love your little animation in the signature. Heres my reference - its a lousy picture of a small head in clay I've modeled. ![]() As you can see the artistic freedom is unlimited.. Bo |

Nice robot, Trinidex.
He reminds me of the ones from I, Robot--- with the smooth, organic-looking body. You left a sketch line on the front of his hip-piece that looks a bit like a butt-cheek--- as if the hips were turned about. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bodot, That clay head rocks! Do you have any more of those? (should those even be posted those in this thread, or the 3D thread?) The next time you're doing a value study of something like this, try to define the planes of the face with different values. If you just look at different parts, you'll see very clear areas where the value is nearly uniform (just below the nose, the chin, cheeks). You can still achieve that 'chiseled' look by using a hard-edged brush, but if you want better resemblance, make sure those shapes are defined by the time you're done. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a face for fun. ![]() Clink, your advice on construction is really helping! |

Looks good AK, nice work
I won't try to make excuses with this XD it's a pretty bad example of 'concept sketching'. I know I went around it the wrong way and the coloring is sub par at best. Nothing to be proud of, but I'll get better over time I guess. Practice practice practice. ![]() |

Trinidex Nice red..and not as bad as you think your self - I think.. akpaintslinger Thanks for your comments Yes I've a couple more of those clay figures I use them as template for some I cast in bronze. ![]() Heres another valuestudie of the one in the left corner: ![]() Nice face you've made - only his nose seems very long - but that's his characteristic.. nice brain fart sketch, antiseal. i'm not very critical so all i've really got to say is that he doesn't quite look like he's holding that board.

Nice RK! You've improved a ton. My only crit would be the hands, one seems smaller than the other. Heres a little unfinished sketch i did. I started doodling and thought i was gonna draw a mechanic. I guess i went for a cyborg instead

Cool cyborg Wondering whats his gesture?...ca va..? comprendo..? I've tried to push the values from ligth to dark Still very sketchy - have to figure out how to render more - smooth it without using the airbrush.....lower opasity...maybe a smaller brush ![]() Bo |

<EY bo! i like the way you're heading, let me try to help alittle. instead of building the shadows, try building the light. by sketching, then fill in all the black then go easy on the white to get the values and lighting right. |

Hey Bodot, have you tried enabling "other dynamics" in the brush tab? Set the opacity jitter control to pen pressure. You can vary the transparecy of your brush that way. Also get in the habbit of colourpicking (keyboard-alt or tablet buttons if you have an Intuos). Makes a world of difference. You can also lower the flow of the brush, this will make for smoother blends. |

Espen & Rubberhead - thanks for your advice.. It made me wanna try again - I painted over the old - first filled it with a dark shadowtone and tried to paint the light My settings in the brush is with pressure opasity and size - but I tried to lower the flow - it helps Now some of the face planes are flattened - but I like the rendering more. Need some practice in this so I wont kill it. Thanks again ![]() Bo |
