the undrowned turnabout

I've done two more backgrounds for my new flash project (as named in my sig). I'm gradually improving on detail and design, although I'm a long way from being good enough to make proper scenes yet. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/ava...background5.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/ava...background6.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/ava...background7.jpg |

Nice to see your project progressing, tsninjapirate! Those are some bright backgrounds!--- I can see where you've differentiated the foreground using brightness darkness. While this effectively separates foreground / background elements, it doesn't look right when you examine the amount of light spilling onto everything else. Why not take things back a notch and re-work your lighting for each scene? On a separate layer, physically draw the primary light element (or the direction it is coming from). From there you have a much clearer sense of where lights/ darks are, and where the shadows and highlights will be struck. Also the colors on most of your layers look highly saturated. One thing you ought to try is toning down the saturation of colours as they distance from the viewer, or 'camera'. This effect can be observed in real life, some people call it atmospheric haze, and it is because of the amount of particles in the air between you and the far away objects. The farther the object and the more particles in the air (such as smoke, dust, or fog), the more pronounced reduction on saturation and value. ![]() Rainforests - Lots of vapor in the air from trees The same goes for detail (or value). Think of it this way: If you stare into a big forest scene with one tree 3 meters away, and another 10 meters away, you'll notice finer details on the closer tree than you will on the farther: ![]() Notice the amount of haze in the trees, highlighted by the direct sunlight. Also, you can notice farther elements have a blue tinge to them, caused by the reflection of blue light from the sky. kib wrote some fantastic posts on the subject of backgrounds last year--- you can read them in this thread. |

hahaha your stuff always makes me smile and takes my breath away you have so funny ideas for your designs, i envy you, im mostly inspirationless your shading improved so much the upper crature looks a bit odd due to the missing eyes and some eye catching parts, such as colour varieties or some special body parts, like armor, or a special skin structure, try to make your rendering more detailed, try not to go over your image only using the big brushstrokes awesome stuff supersack, you should start a scetchbook, id like to see your stuff packed in one thread with a recent update @ accordo: well you said it yourself already, it looks like you just blocked in colours without details, now go further if you are aware that you CAN go further, add a ligh source, add degradation for the mountains, add trees, add some focal points ect. |

Here is something that will add some realism: ][][Atmospheric perspective][][ On earth, we have gases occupying the space between solid objects. Usually this is just air. Air is invisible. Air is not invisible, it's just really thin. However, over a long distance, you can see more of it. This is why the sky has a color [which, by the way, is dependent on the position of the sun, how the light rays hit it and refract different frequencies]. The basic principle to remember is
This can get complicated when you add in misty cloud patches or new light sources, etc. But keep it simple for starters, and then experiment with more complicated things. So in your case, I'm assuming you made the cliff on a new layer. If that's so, then double-click it and go down to color overlay. Using the color picker, select the color of the sky background. The play around with the opacity until it looks right. Remember, use the scale of the objects to determine the distance which will allow you to find the right amount of atmosphere. |

Tried out ArtRage for a bit. I thought it might be relaxing to play around with life-like paints but ended up wanting to curse at the screen because everything was going wrong. (The only painting I ever do is Photoshop so i had to get used to the whole 'wet paint' and 'actually knowing my colors' thing). ![]() |

Well, ElectricGnort, I'd say that it still ended up looking pretty good.
Maybe a bit more detail and light on the far side of that rock in the foreground...You can use crayons if you find wet paint difficult. For that matter, you can control the wetness level. Also, I'm not sure if you know this, but you should use the palette knife for mixing two different colours (works with crayons too). Here are some sketches that I did inspired by my membership of a number of wind ensembles: ![]() Just trying out my first tablet for the first time (in ArtRage, but using only the pen tool). I'm still getting used to this... it's definitely not as natural as using a pen or pencil; it takes longer to draw the same thing, but then again, maybe that time is made up by how quickly it's transferred to the computer. |

haha great character in those, Esn! very nice! you should put them all together in one picture. it'd be interesting to see them right next to each other.![]() my sister [PLUG!!!] not by any means perfect, but I got good practice out of it. this sketch further developed my respect for pen & ink. it's a very delicate medium and should be treated with extreme care if you want to create a clean drawing. it's way too easy to make a mistake you can't fix <_< also, try not to mind that weird band of color in the middle. crappy scan job |

I like that, RKTuneKitty! Simple, clean, uncomplicated, and effective. It looks like the work of someone who knows exactly what they're doing, because you did what was needed and not a bit more. The only thing I might work on is the hair. It seems too complex compared to everything else; a bit forced. Maybe try to find a quicker, easier way to get what you need. |
