Thirsty, have you read Uzumaki by Junji Ito? Your style is similar, especially with that spirally lollipop.

And if you haven't read it then do so. It's sick and twisted and wonderful. :)

No, no. It's a manga in its own right. Uzumaki is japanese for 'spiral'. The manga is a horribly twisted story about a town that gets infected by spirals and they appear everwhere, with murderous intent. People are found dead in strange cirumstances. One man falls in love with spirals so much that he buys a huge vat and curls up into it killing himself in a grotesque spiral of flesh. The stories get nastier and nastier. It's a great read, if you have a strong stomach.

Here's an image from the manga. I thought it felt slightly like your image above.

Piccy.

This is just a little animation I did for my toon. I know it's a bit choppy, but that's how I'm going to be keeping a lot of the animation for laziness reasons. I don't want to be working on this project 'till the day I die ;)
Edit: Damn that web browser slowdown! It's not supposed to look that choppy! Argh

Noob (and any other more skilled illustrators), can I ask you guys how I should start serious drawing? Any recommended books or websites? I think I'm about ready to move past simple cartoon characters, and I want to know where I should start. This question has been asked an answered millions of times, but how about one more time for my slow little brain?

As u started out with toons,u'd probably find it a bit difficult to get into doin the real stuff.nice animation by the way! rough but nice.

hmmm..where do u wanna go is the question ,U wanna do everything?...the human figure is probably the hardest to learn in illustration.

u know....the dreaded ANATOMY phase...hehe,anatomy in illustration is like the walk cycle in animation....FRIGGIN HARD TO GET THE HANG OF!!

two words.......LOOMIS.....*ahem*

If ur really serious there Jem,I recomend all the loomis book.and i got all of the books in Pdf files *well most*...however they are long and complex books that involve allota reading, they are loads of images, but u gotta make sure u read to understand.

if u want em,i'll try and email the zip files to u.

NOOB! TO THE RESCUE YET AGAIN!!!

I'll send u *Figure drawing for all its worth* which is all about...well..drawing the figure duh!,its around 120 pages i think.

hook me up with ur email addresses guys if u want that.and don't worry,i did my research and its not illegal.

once u know how to draw the figure properly,u'll be able to draw a toon character in 2mins

That's not the original size, I made the picture bigger this time so I could test out Bergkvist's eye painting tutorial/exercise. Check it out, it's pretty awesome.

*sniff* I missed that comment. Thanks man ^_^
But the sad truth is my style is pretty much a hideous frakenstein-esque combination of my artistic limitations. I want to at least learn basic anatomy, then I can return to cartoons, and I'll be able to inject at least a little realism into them.

N00B, are you sure that the link I gave dosen't have the whole book? Once you click on a section, there's a scroll box where you can select any page.
Thanks for the pdf.s

Yeh but I was sendin u pdf’s for easier access, so u don’t have to save each page ,and so u can access it without going online.

Busman,I don’t want to discourage your, but I’m not clear on whats happening, are those mountains? I can’t see any depth within the image.

How about posting a sketch *no colour* next time of what ur doin,so I can see where u wanna go,then maybe we can take it step by step.

Sorry for my ignorance, but this interests me because you're such an accomplished illustrator. Why does a reference make that tutorial useless?

no no no,there nothing wrong with usin ref.

i'm saying, she has used ref to make that tutorial, and all eyes are different,so the shading and lighting she uses is to match the ref she used.thats how it looks so easy.

so its not really a *tutorial* its more of a step by step.it doesn't teach your the properties of lighting, how light hits the eye.etc.

however it does give u rough idea of how to construct it.it depends what ur doin really.

lol,and how are u ignorant?
