well i have been messing with 3D for about 5 years but if you are really into it you can learn the basics in 6 months and be fairly good in a year, i started with Blender, which is free and a great start to 3D

It shows. Great stuff, my mate is getting me a copy of 3D max I want to do tanks etc. Although it will take me ages to get good with the program etc.
Have you done any landscapes etc or just models?

Here's my project so far:
:gasp:

As you can see it looks pretty dodge so far, but it's the first project I've done using any 3d program. I've only used about 3,500 polygons out of my 20,000 so I hope I can get it looking much better. AS you can see there is no roof at the moment, and I usually work with those two.... domes, hidden.

Hey Calco, try to be a little creative with edges, like some trim around the door.
You could split up the wall into a different material at the bottom, create some insets just under the roof, etc...
usually when splitting up a shape you'll get tangents where you can naturally put detail.

I know you're not finished or anything, just some ideas... :bfoot:

Aww that sucks. But yeah I love my class. And it will be even better next year.
This is the update version. It took me belive it or not over 14 hours to unwrap the character. There are minor glips in it but I don't have enough time at the moment to fix it.Enjoy ^^

Hooooly cow. Get Unfold 3D and spare yourself the agony.

Not a bad character, but work on your three-point lighting. ;)

Here's the finished model of my mosque, I only used around 7000-8000 polygons out of my 20000 max, and I ran out of time so I had to rush the finishing touches. Here are some photos, not very good views to show off all of it, but oh well.

EDIT: Also, no need to comment on the lighting, I used omni lighting and it seemed not to throw of any shadows for some odd reason. :S

@Anghenfil : thanks ;) I'll look that up and I already fixed a 10 better lighting. This was just a test render =) I'll see if I can throw in the picture later ^^

@ C0mBineD : well it could but its pretty hard giving it a nose when its a anime character. But I totally know what you mean

@Calco: see if the "shadows" box is hooked.I would altso use turbosmooth on the mountain to make it look more real and maybe find another texture for it.
The BG is a picture on a plane right? Try get the same mood from the picture over the church.Choose a light pink purplish colour in the lighting and it looks more real.
And I Would altso have more variety in the textures for the chairs and stuff. It would take you 2 min to unwrap the church roof and make it look cooler too =) And you should use champfer more. Other then that good work man and good luck ;) I'm turning mine in aswell so =)

Thanks for all the crits man. Problem is, I ran out of available blank materials, is there some way I can make more?

Also, I'm not allowed to turbo smooth, not only cause out teacher would prefer we didn't, but also because we have a poly limit.

No problem man.And there are several ways you can get different textures.Either just google some wood images.Try search for wooden floor for instance as their flat. Then you can crop out the available parts and unwrap the surfaces on the chair or table. When all the areas are flatten out you can press render UV mapping. Then you open it in photoshop and use stample tool to transfer the wood over to the texture. Then save it as a photoshop file and open it in 3D stud max and put it on the same way you use any default 3D max pictures ;) Or just use the tilting ;) your call :)

What I meant was, is there a way I can get more 'blank' texture spots, I've used all of mine up.

Ahh sorry man..I didnt get it untill now.Well you can for instance use multi sub-object.That allows you to pick up to 12 new textures on a model. But that means you have to add everything to eachother in editeble poly
