Actually, by professional standards, I'm working with fairly lame model. I'm not complaining, cause it gets me by and it's plenty for things like Flash. But, it can get bogged down with 3D. I have a Sony Vaio 3.2ghz and 1gig of ram. My video card is a Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440. It came with the machine and at the time I bought it (a few years ago), I thought it was the shit. I soon realized how it chugs once I really started getting into 3D. My next step is to get a new card, but I doubt I'll have $300+ anytime soon to make the upgrade. |

I am a fan of Ghost Painter myself...It allows you to open up photoshop in a viewport in max....And the UV maps are scalable because they are vector....A huge plus.....Taking a screen capture shot is very past tense now... |

Nope, nor does Prickles aside from his surgical gloves and elaborate specticals.
NEVER! MUHAHHAHHAAA! Seriously, as I've mentioned countless times, I have no immediate plans for any Lucid movies/shorts. Don't expect anything more than concept art until next year (and even that may be pushing it). But, thanks for asking Munchalottapous. BTW, I watched your Red movie and there was a strangely familiar lolli-toting victim with a beard but no mustache. That wasn't me, was it? Oh Nurbsie, you lucky fool. Ghost Painter is a gem I've wanted for some time. [edit] Finished modeling Goo. Had to make a few last minute changes on the hands and feet. Due to time contraints, skinning/rigging webbed hands and feet is a luxury/headache I can't afford right now. So, instead she's getting frog-like hands/feet. Now on to environments... ![]() Note: You may notce a few sharp contours on this render. I dropped my iterations down to 1 for a quicker render. This render used a skylight with light tracer and a few tweaks to the color bleed/bounces options. |

woah they are brilliant dave. i love seeing other peoples work! it gives a great urge to practise more and experiment. Ive only used 3DSM for a few months in class and havent used it since (last year). Cant wait to get back into it. Anyone here seen the 3D virtual clay modeller tool u can buy. its sort of like a pen attached to an arm/lever thing, and u draw in the air. Its looks amazing. |

Okay, I've been modeling for 8 hours straight and I needed a little breather. So, I figured I'd post my progess with the Prickles environment. There is a desk and books on the shelfs now, but it was gonna take too long to render ATM. So, you'll just have to imagine them.
 ![]() Well, I guess I better get back to it.

We were assigned to do a chicken in Maya. Any tips in modeling, texturing, or lighting (ESPECIALLY lighting or texturing) is very welcome. This was modeled, textured, and rigged this in about 14 hours, and it's my first time in subdivision, so I'm sorry that it looks funky/overly simplified.![]() ![]() This one looks pinched and distorted because we weren't required to paint weights for the rig, and frankly it was more than I had time for. Critique anything about the picture you want, especially line of action. Anyone know quick ways to soften the lighting? ![]() And I might as well ask this because I have both programs: Is there any way to port work from Maya to 3dsMax or vice versa with independent software? I doubt it since the environments are so different, but I figure I have nothing to lose by asking. Oh, and humble, you have beautiful work! Can you recommend a tutorial on mental ray? |

sorry *wannabe 3d animator pushes through the crowd* but what's UV, and how do you create your own texture and another thing, how do you rig nurbs models? *sheepish laugh* |

I would assume you rig nurbs like you would rig any other model, but you usually need nurbs "patches" for complex models and deformations. I really don't know enough about this to tell you properly, so I'm sorry
UV's are graph coordinates, like XY in trigonometry, except UV's are for dictating where a particular part of your texture should be placed. In a polygon model, each vertex also has a corresponding UV that is set onto a 2D surface. Thus, you paint the texture on a 2D UV surface, and those UV's tell the program where each part of the texture should go. For example, this is the UV map for my chicken that you can see above. (To others: Please critque. I know it's asymmetrical, and I know how to fix that in future models): Unpainted ![]() Painted ![]() Each one of those points in the unpainted map correspond to a vertex on the actual model. |

The learning curve is extremely steep when you first start out, but once you've bullied through the first few months of basics, all the terms and techniques just build on each other. It doesn't necessarily get easier , as you're constantly learning new things, but you stop being so intensely overwhelmed. Just hang in there, start simple, and do small tutorials and exercises. |

Looking Good there Umbleego...It looks like something that i'll have in my house when im in my 40's... A nice library that i can loose myself in that is also my animation studio. Of coarse like Prickles i'd probably roam around in the buff as well..
 EDIT- Nice chicken there Anghenfil and welcome! a thing that i like doing is changing the color of the lights...It seems to warm up the scene a bit and gets rid of that sterilness that i think you're talking about..... |

Bussman and DifferentName: Check out the video tutorials over at http://www.3dbuzz.com. Buzz is a great teacher and is really good at telling you everything you need to know in a simple yet non-patronising way. I don't know how much these'll help with Swift3D (never used it myself) but it'll get you started with either 3D Studio Max or Maya. Juggle: Applying UVs is different in each program. In Max it's achieved by applying the appropriate mapping modifier to your model and then tweaking the UV image vertices so that the wireframe texture is all flat and proportionate. That flat image is then exported to a program like photoshop and painted on. Max then remembers which parts of the texture go on which part of the model. I'm sure Humble could explain it better. Personally applying UVs is horribly painful for me. I don't really have the patience for it. It's very fiddly and time consuming. Hopefully the programs Humble listed above will cut down on that though.

Thank you, mr. nurbs! It's great to be here Hopefully I'll be able to learn a lot from you guys during my time at the forum. Extra-thanks for the lighting tip; I've heard that from another modeler before and I think I'll seriously put it into practice now.

Thanks HumblePie.
You could always download the episodes using a Bittorrent client. If you were that way inclined... ¬_¬ Update! The modelling stage is complete. All limbs and eyestalks are attached. ![]() Texture time! Oh bum. My bandwidth has run out. Good thing it's a new month tomorrow. Hopefully they'll reinstate me within a few hours. Hopefully. Edit: Here we go. I uploaded the latest image to Deviantart. Edit 2: Neek is back up now. Hooray.

Hey, Dave, any progress on the "Prickles and Goo" environments? Maybe you could post some pictures? I downloaded 3Dsmax 7 trial. I've managed to do quite some stuff with boxes and boolean. This is a house on the hill. I posted a 2D picture of it in "the look at my stuff" forum too. ![]() The quality is quite bad, I don't even know why. I probably messed up some quality settings.
