My machine should be eating this program for breakfast but its lagging like hell.

It could be a peculiarity of your computer. When I put Maya on my laptop, none of the menus would show words on them. I eventually figured out that I had to increase the dpi resolution from 72 to 128. No clue why it works, but it does; I haven't had a problem since.

Start googling for various keywords... name of your computer, specs, 3DS Max, version, and then "running slowly" etc. Hopefully it will score you some hits. You can also check out some of the 3D forums (like CGtalk or Polycount) and ask them.

Try turning off additional options of your graphic card; sometimes 3D programs get all fishy with those. Also try turning down the quality, if you can.

3D programs also tend to make the cpu run hot. Keep an eye on the core temp and try to keep it below 40 celcius. If it runs hotter than that, buy a cooling fan.

Well, Maya Unlimited Student Edition is only $360... :P

You've got to be fucking kidding me... I could actually afford Maya now in a couple of months, instead of years.

Jeez I havent been on this forum in a long long time sadly. But i just so happened to see that there is now a 3d thread, which is awsome!

Ive only been using 3D applications now for around 5 to 6 months in my animation class.

Here is a spacescape ive been working on for the past day, feel free to leave comments if you got a DA account.

alright, got it working, and am doing the 3d modeling tut for a chess piece, i made the outline with the line tool like it said, and then selected fillet, and rounded it out, cept when i go to drag the vertices, THEY DONT MOVE ACCEPT FOR UP AND DOWN!

Its pissing me off, im trying to fix it becuase i have no godamn clue what im doing accept what the tutorial has told me, it only took me AGES to track down all the tools its telling me to look for becuase oh no, its wont tell you where they are! you gotta guess! and now for some reason i cant move my vertices.

*rips out the heart of 3ds max and kicks it around the world 3 times*

These tutorials are frustrating the hell out of me, and im only a few minutes into it!

Edit:

i restarted 3dsmax 8 and that seemed to fix the problem, why did it do that anydangway!

There are a few reasons why it might have done that.
The first reason: In the toolbar (or what used to be in the toolbar anyway) were buttons called "xy", "yz", "zx", "x", "y", and "z". Basically those buttons let you move objects in those particular directions, and you might have accidentally clicked on / pressed a keyboard shortcut for the "y" one.
The second reason: When you select an object there is a "crosshair". To drag it in any direction you don't put the mouse over the crosshair. You may have been putting your mouse over the Y axis of the crosshair, which meant that you could only move it up and down.

Anyway. :P

yeah, i just found out i moved my mouse on the y axis and it would only move that way, but i move my mouse over another an its fine, the only thing is its easy to accidentally do that, anyway to just keep it freehand?

also, i get spammed saying my backgrounds taking up 140 or so ram and do i want to contnue, it spams me so much i cant zoom/unzoom anymore, how the heck do i turn it off?

EDIT: aaannnnnd it just crashed, sweet, that RAM spam thing actually went nuts and crashed my file, sweeeet.

Decided to share this render with all you 3D guys and anyone that likes starwars... Its a
replica of Darth Vaders lightsaber. Modled and rendered with 3ds max 7. Took a few days of off and on working for the modeling. Still not happy with the materials, and the render is too dark i think, you cant see alot of the detail. Going to try and render one with the blade extended.

Nice lightsaber B)

(that can be taken too many ways)

Anyways, just a very simple question, ive noticed that 3ds is a bit more complicated than your average 3d program (duh). I used to model in milkshape 3d, which was simple in its own right.

But, 3dsmax VS maya?

What are some differences, ups and downs, and advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other. I know Zbrush kicks arse for organic modeling, but i have no monies, so thats out of the window.

Thanks.

I have both programs, so I feel somewhat qualified to answer this. :P

Maya is by far the more powerful program; it's very customizable and has a metric ton of plug-ins. 3DS Max is much more user-friendly. They each have their ups and downs, and Maya takes longer to learn, but I ultimately prefer Maya. It's easier to rig and animate in, and once you know Maya you can pretty much handle everything else.

If you're a programmer, rigger, or animator, Maya is better hands-down. If you're more into modeling, texturing, or just getting your feet wet, definitely go with 3DS Max. Rendering is a bit of a toss-up, but I think 3DS Max wins there slightly. That advantage goes away if you use an outside rendering software like Turtle, or you really take the time to learn Mentalray.

Alright, so the way i figure Maya is a good program to build up to. I complete my first real model in max like 5 days ago (just a ruddy looking pawn from the tuts)
Bit im starting to get the hang of it, what i really want to to know this stuff for film.

I want to look into Terragen as a possibily for rendering some nice surroundings without actually having to goto a location. But i never see any trees in Terragen and wonder if thats supported, im interested becuase this summer we are supposed to finish up production in SDR (Seth Darkwood Ressurection) and i have a bunch of bluescreen shots tracked but no background.

Would terragen be a effective program for this?

Cheers

I havent used Terragan but all i know is that it seems to be a pretty sweet program. But i have noticed that most of the scenes ive seen made from Terragan mostly consisted of water and some sort of mountains... So i dont know if you can do trees in Terragan. But another program you could look into is a plugin called Dreamscape, which I here is a real nice plugin for landscapes.

I thought that some of you chaps that like 3D might be interested in seeing this. This is a render of my latest 3D work and my first time ever modeling something so complicated, I hope you guys like it.

Something surreal just happened to me. I saw someone posted a new 3d pic and I thought "I'm gonna be the usual a-hole and, whatever his 3d object looks like, I'm gonna say something like "nice duck"" and then turns out it's a duck. I'm overwhelmed with omens, I'll take a week off to think about this

You probably need to turn on Anti-Aliasing somewhere in your render settings.

Nice duck =P

Could just be because of the harsh lighting and the low-res shot. Try upping the render dimensions.

Here are some scraps I've done in my spare time when I was bored. Nothing really noteworthy here as most of them took around an hour.

Posted Image
^Just a random arm canon I made after playing too much Metroid Prime 2.

Posted Image
^The Boom Box from the upcoming children's show Yo Gabba Gabba!

Posted Image
^Just a random test tube.

^My own version of a DDR metal pad.

Oh scraps, why are you all so shameful to your master.

Well seems like this thread has completly died out.I just have to blow some life into it then.Iam very sure only a small number knows how to operate 3d max, maya and every other programme very well.I myself knows alittle now and the 3d classes at school really pays off. After 3 weeks I finally get to put together a mesh for an air Jet. Hope you guys like it.Comments or questions are much welcomed :)
