Shared Objects

As I've started working with friends and coming up with ideas for games, I looked into ways you could save data (i.e. movie clip positions or types). One way I found other than cookies is 'shared objects' (from what I understand, it's kinda like Flash's version of cookies).

So, for example, if I were to make a design a character page with different frames in a movie clip for the hair, upper body, lower body, and shoes (each frame in each movie clip would have a different style of whatever it is), how could I do this using the shared objects concept? (I'm using Flash 2004, if this info is useful at all :lol:).
