I would check out flashkit.com, they have some awesome flash tutorials and actually one that involves building a side scrolling space shooter game. If you follow along and examine how they do everything, Im sure you will be able to figure out exactly what you want to do with your game.

Generally Uninterested.
flash kit is great, but i wouldnt actaully make a game with the code u get from there, cuz then there is no room to add your own special touch to it. ask around different forums, i think kirupa.com has a good forum for stuff like that. see if someone might wanna help u with the code a bit.
