Hey guys there isn't a section on operating systems so i figured that I start this little shindig off....This is a place where you can ask questions about your computer...You have any problems with it? Are you getting the "Blue screen of death"? Well come ask some questions that may be answered by some of our brilliant forum members...

My question concerns partitioning...

I have just installed a new 80GB hard drive because my last one crapped out on me. In the start up in bios, i had the option of partitioning the HD so i decided to allot 40GB for my OS and programs. Everything installed fine except for when i checked out the system information which stated that i only have 40GB! :o Where did the other 40 GB's go? I didn't know that you had to partition the rest. I just figured that it would partition the remainder of the drive space which it didn't. Can anyone enlighten me on how to do this? I run Windows XP home edition...

Thanks in advanced!

Did you make sure to make a partition for the other 40GB?

No i didn't...I didn't see an option for that.....it's probably an issue that's resolved in the BIOS i think...

Just wondering. I partitioned mine through that and didn't have problems partitioning my hard drive. Looks like if you want to use that other 40 gigs, you'll need to back up everything and reinstall Windows.

Unfortunatly, there isn't anything that doesn't risk having to reformat anything. If your hard drive came with a boot disk (if it didn't, I imagine the manufactor of your HD would have a downloadable version on their website), the programs on that should be able to partition the last 40gb without having to do it through the Windows installer. I'd still back up your stuff if I were you.

No worries....I actually opened up the help menu in windows and found it...You don't need to reinstall. To partition the rest of a hard drive, go into the Computer Management .

To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. It actually shows you the unpartitioned space. Simply right clicking on the volume and selecting partition did the trick.

I appreciate the help Markham...

I wonder if the same method will work for partioning removable drives? I have a 120 gig and a 80 gig removable HD's and would like to partition the 120 gig one.... Ill try it out when I have a second and let everyone know...

Im sure there is going to be some software that comes with a removeable but i couold be wrong.....If im right, you'd probably partition using the software itself...

I guess it depends how "removable" it is...

If it's removable usb, then i'm not sure, but if it's a caddy system like this

Then you should be able to partition it as normal. Caddy drives are just hard disk drives inside containers that you can add and remove with ease. :)

Nope, not stackables. I have two usb external drives. One Maxtor 80 gig, and one Buslink 120 gig.

The only "software" either came with was actually just drivers. It's the 120 gig one I want to partition, but until I get everything on there organized and transferred to cd its a pretty mute point. I figure there is a good 10(ish) hours work involved in cleanimg it out, and to be honest I just havent had the desire to even start yet! <_<

When I actually do get to that point I will scour the manufacturers website and see if there are any "methods" I should be following.... one day!

That same method should work just the same for removable hard drives. There are numerous methods to partition hard disks, and you don't necessarily have to be using the manufacturer's software. There are quite a few partitioning things for linux... like fdisk, GNU parted and qtparted. They work great, but you can always get the commercial product Norton PartitionMagic. There are plenty of ways.

I'm just wondering what is better to use a pc or a mac? I use a pc but never really got to know the mac.

If you use allot of Windows software, PC
If you like to play games, PC
If you wanna change hardware, PC
If you like to be in total control, PC
If you do not want spend time keeping your system clean, MAC
If you mainly use it to browse the web, email, etc... MAC
If you like a sleek interface, MAC
If you don't like virusses of spyware, MAC
If you don't mind spending more then you would on a equavalent PC in terms of performance, MAC

Is either one better "graphically" ? Absolutely not.
Getting to know the Mac OS interface after having worked with Windows for years can be a pain, but it's pretty nice once you get over it.
Main things I don't like about Macs are that the OS is graphically rather heavy on the system, especially when you work with older models. Plus you can't really change every part of the hardware, or not as much as a PC.

It has it's benefits tough, no more virusscanners, no more crap that installs itself, and it mostly works out of the box since there's no compatibility issues and generally less need to tune up your system once in a while.
Also the latest models have really nice monitors.

Actually from the perspectives from some of the chaps in the printing department at my job and from my own experiences hanging out with these guys with a mac and PC literally side by side, It's mac hands down.

PC's can't handle certain color profiles that macs have no problem with. We even used the same monitors to assure there were absolutely variances in this experiment we did.

What was happening, was that the comic book covers we were redoing had serious level problems from people working at different workstations with different gear. So we set up 2 systems to nip this in the bud.

The result of this experiment was that the mac had the closer color range they were looking for for them to print correctly. When I make my graphics here at home, I use my mac to get the colors I need so I know when im looking at my stuff online from someone elses computer and it looks to be a little off, I'll know it isn't for sure..

This is also important when you want to make some propanda for your cartoons/cd covers/ mouse pads etc.... If you don't make sure that your color correction is there, your hues will vary.

I wonder if Bleeg can shed a little more light on the subject considering he's had a cafe express account for a while now...

This was pretty informative. What is a cafe express account? So a mac is better with graphics or printing graphics? What do you guys use the majority of the time?

Hmm, this depends on which BSOD you have. Most people don't know that there's more than one.

If you are getting the more famous one, the one with just a couple lines of text centered on the screen, then your error is most likely due to an application of some sort. What are you doing when the blue screen pops up? Whatever application you're using at the time of the crash is most likely the source. If you're not using any programs, the source is either windows itself, or possibly some sort of virus.

If you're getting the more serious, super-evil screen of death, the problem is a little easier to solve. This screen has lots of text, all down the left side of the screen. It will likely say something about the drivers going in to an infinite loop. This one is simple to solve. Just see which driver it is referring to, and reinstall it. you can usually get them from the manufacturer's website. If it doesn't refer to any particular driver, then reinstall them all.

Hey this is a great idea for a topic.

As far as graphic stuff. I use both mac and pc and, as far as I know, mac appears to have much more control over calibration and all that shit. I use my PC for music because there are so many performance hacks for pc. I use my mac for graphic, mainly cause it's my laptop.
