It was intended as part of a larger project but I've gotten a little busy since the last update. I hope that this animation becomes more than an experiment, but if it doesn't, that's okay. I gained a lot by just working on it.

The height of the towers degrades at an almost uniform level--- that combined with the line of the clouds points my eye straight off the left side of the canvas. ![]() You could try varying the height of the towers to break their predictable line. You might try raising the height of the rock spire of the farthest tower, yet keeping the design of the towers themselves continuous. Add dark value foreground elements to bring out depth. Draw in more atmospheric effects to aid with the composition. Don't be afraid to experiment with values in your thumbnails, either. This doesn't necessarily mean blocking in all your lights and darks, but you can vary the value and weight of your linework. i.e. drawing distant mountains in a lighter shade than close-up foreground elements. |

Peterborough Time!!! This is what I have spent the last year and a half helping out with. Peterborough is where I live and all the people were photographed and cut up in Photoshop and later brought into Flash. It premiered at a theatre in my town and almost sold out. Plus all proceeds made by tickets sales went to Five Counties Children Centre. |

I was just about to say that myself. It's lacking contrast, especially the foreground. But aside from that? It's looking good and I hope the collab goes well. |

Yeah, now that you guys mention it, it does lack contrast. Although I'm not sure how to fix this, any tips? |

I assume it's done in flash so it shouldn't be too hard. Just use the black mouse tool to select the areas of shading and change their fill color to a darker color (make the closest parts the darkest and let the further background ones go paler and paler to make them look like they are going further into the distance (tis called sfumato). |

Have your darkest darks and lightest lights in the foreground. So maybe darken your grass a bit and that forest or bush closest to us should also darken up a bit. edit: GatesRyu beat me to it

I dont remember what forum my original doodley sketches were in.. but this is for a character im developing. this is just the girl, im going to be adding her pieces of armor over this drawing. the girls ive shown say the boobs are too high, but its cuz the armor will push em up, and the reason the one hand isnt drawn is cuz the armor on that armor will be completely hiding the hand.

i really like your little alien fellah monkeyboy. hes got alot of character in an apathetic teenager alien sorta way. i really like how simple you kept it too. a good story for him would be a leave it to beaver kinda parody. laugh tracks included. |

Because I don't write well enough to describe my critique, I did a redline instead. ![]() I tried to lower the breasts, smooth out the ribcage and neck bones and muscles, define the stomach and hips (and the belly button), and clean up the knees. The face is beautiful and I can see you've already spent a lot of time on it. Hope this helps! |

Ok, I think that this might be a more suitable thread than the daily sketch thread... The story is that I'm working on my first animated film and am going for a New Years' release date. It'll be about a minute long. Right now I'm focusing on making the backgrounds, which I'm painting in ArtRage. I haven't painted in many years, so this is a big learning experience for me. ![]() So far, I have just over 20 backgrounds left to paint. Here are the first two: ![]() ![]() Both of them have good and bad points. I'm not really that happy with either, but I'm on a pretty tight schedule, so I'll probably just leave them as is (unless it's something really easy to fix). The snow in the first one is far too bright, but I couldn't make it darker and have it still look good. The colours in the second one aren't quite harmonious, but I'm not sure exactly why. I still haven't quite settled on a visual style, as you can see. The second one is probably closer to what I'm going for. I ideally want a kind of warm and painterly look. |

I like them esn. the first one looks a bit rough but i like the others. if you added some darker colors on the first ones snow and some yellow under the window in the roof to show the light reflecting in the night..... http://img164.imageshack.us/my.php?image=houseoutds6gs1.jpg a bit like that? |

Hmm, possibly. Thanks for the suggestion. I did put some yellow outside of the window, but it's very little. Next time I take a walk at night, I'll try to check which version is closer to the way window light really reflects off the snow outside. It's probably yours, though that might be a bit too strong. I don't agree about the green on the tree, though; trees at night all look pretty black and colourless, and you can only really see the snow. What I really should've done is made the snow darker, but that only made the tree look better when I tried it (while ruining the colour balance of the overall picture). EDIT: One more,

Thanks. No, I'm actually using the program ArtRage (which can be bought online for just $25) and a PF-1209 12x9 tablet. I'm using the paintbrush tool on a dark rough canvas, mostly, as well as a few other things. If you're interested in more specifics, I describe them somewhere in here. One more (this one took just an hour):
